Abstract

The ambiguities and difficulties of church-state relations in wartime are explored through the negotiations that took place about the institutional role of the churches between the Foreign Office, the Ministry of Infor­mation and the leadership of the Church of England during the Second World War. Concerns about political exploitation of the churches, and the extent to which the Church of England was implicated in politics and propaganda, are illustrated by examining some aspects of the use made by the Ministry of Information of Anglican relations with the Orthodox churches. Special attention is given to an Anglican delegation led by the Archbishop of York to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1943.Cette étude analyse les rapports entre l'Église anglicane et le gouvernement britannique par le biais des conversations entre le « Foreign Office » , le « Ministry of Information » et les échelons supérieurs de l'Église anglicane. L'étude démontre la crainte des ecclésiastiques d'être exploités politiquement en raison des rapports de l'Église anglicane avec les Églises orthodoxes. L'étude cite en particulier la rencontre d'une délégation anglicane menée par l'archevêque de York avec l'Église orthodoxe de Russie en 1943.Anhand von Verhandlungen über die institutionelle Rolle der Kirchen, die zwischen dem Außenamt, dem Ministerium für Informationen und den Führern der Anglikanischen Kirche im Zweiten Weltkrieg stattfanden, werden die Zweideutigkeiten und Schwierigkeiten des Verhältnisses zwischen Kirche und Staat zu Kriegszeiten dargestellt. Durch eine Untersu­chung der Art und Weise, auf die sich das Ministerium für Informationen verschiedene Aspekte der Beziehungen zwischen der Anglikanischen und den Orthodoxen Kirchen zunutze machte, werden Bedenken über die politische Ausnutzung der Kirchen und das Ausmaß, zu dem die Anglikanische Kirche in Politik und Propaganda verwickelt war, dargestellt.
