Abstract

This essay examines the transition from ancient to modern and contemporary forms of care, questioning about the ideas which motivated and generated specific care practices in different social-historical contexts. Such analysis is the premise of the question: which are or could be the sources of care in a planetary and second-modern era? In these societies life and health expectancies have increased together with a greater range of offers of care to the point that it is now possible to speak of the formation of modern societies of health. But, in such societies, the widespread and shared deep motivations of “caring” both in the familiar, interpersonal and professional sphere seem to be undergoing a crisis, with critical effects not only in terms of quality and relationships, but also of difficult coordination among different forms and knowledge of care
