Abstract

In the 18th century, authors investigating the effect of music on the human body and soul were many. Apart from specialized studies, allusions to this topic are constantly to be found in works on the theory or the history music, or in medical treatises of a general nature. It is indeed in the context of a new vision of the whole man, restored after a dualist tradition had long held sway, that — it is argued — this appeal to music as a cure for all ills of mind and body is to be understood.
