In a reinterpretation of the history of fetishism as a concept, Ian traces the significance of the trope of the "phallic mother" from early psychoanalytic discourse through Klein, Kristeva, and Lacan; across key works of modernist literature by Wilde, Eliot, Joyce, Lawrence, Genet, and others; and in recent feminist theory, gender theory, and postmodern critical theory.
