Abstract

This paper presents a new theory of truth entitled “the story theory of truth.” In this theory, the truth of a truth-bearer is defined as unfalsified-ness. Unfalsified-ness is defined in terms of cognitive defeat and supra-epistemic blocking. When a truth-bearer S makes the cognitive agent withdraw their assent to another truth-bearer T, S cognitively defeats T. When truth-bearers conflict and a supra-epistemic blocker blocks them, they get blocked. A truth-bearer is true as long as it is undefeated and unblocked. This theory is inspired by a few Indian philosophical ideas.
