Milk or Blood?: Generation and Speech in Chr\’etien de Troyes’ "Perceval, Ou Le Conte Du Graal"

Abstract

Through analysis of rhetorical structures dependent on images of milk and blood, I demonstrate that the enduring site of narrative and personal generation in the romance is the maternal order, which is identified with the grail and contrasted with the corrupted paternal-Arthurian order.
