Abstract

This chapter discusses Catholic perspectives on natural theology. It begin with Michael Buckley's proposal that a particular approach to natural theology has contributed to modern atheism, which sets the scene for renewed natural theology in the Catholic tradition. The chapter then explores the approaches of Karl Rahner and Hans Urs von Balthasar, and shows how Walter Kasper's natural theology builds creatively on them. The final section considers developments that raise important questions for natural theology today: liberation, feminist and ecological theologies; post-modern thought; and, the theology–science dialogue.
