Abstract

This article points out that Peter Carruthers’ ethical theory – which holds that all and only human beings are members or full members of the moral community and that their duty to non-human animals are only indirect ones – entails that to non-human animals is accorded only a very low moral standing. It follows that this view provides insufficient protection against human actions, which may violate important animals’ interests. Carruthers’ recourse to slippery slope argument and to social stability in order to undermine the objection of marginal cases and to support the claim that all human beings and only these should be given full moral status is inadequate to prove what it is intended to prove. It is claimed that no good reasons are given to rule out non-human animals, which are bearers of interests, from direct moral concern
