Abstract

There is no shortage of books and papers citing Lagrange’s Méchanique analitique (1788). Yet, though armed with a thorough knowledge of secondary literature, the modern reader is likely to struggle with every page. Even the most dedicated Lagrangian scholars are not hardy enough to follow the book all the way through. Like many classics of the exact sciences, the Méchanique analitique is a labyrinthine microcosm.
