Abstract
The article begins by exposing briefly the catastrophe theory the bases of which are on Rene Thom and E.C. Zeeman and then introduces the "catastrophe machine" to make graphic the catastrophic changes, sudden changes from state to another completely opposed. Afterwards examples are given taken from biology or human life. Lastly a graphic is presented to show the relationships among states to conclude with the consequences that this theory may have in social sciences
