slaves to fashion ‐ the philosopher, being no slave to sex, smart clothes, shoes and adornment philosophers, practicing separation of soul and body ‐ also practice dying philosopher, what they should make of fashion ‐ not slaves to fashion, sex, or the ephemeral Socratic principle, retaining some appeal ‐ applying beyond the high‐minded halls of philosophy Mary Wollstonecraft, denouncing “air of fashion” ‐ as a “badge of slavery,” wherever it is worn Rousseau, proposing a double standard ‐ “What will people think?” the grave of a man's virtue, but it is “the throne of a woman's” autonomous being, whose autonomy ‐ somehow, getting pushed out of the picture models, valued instrumentally, commodified ‐ treated as nothing but bodies, as beings whose subjectivity doesn't count moral bonds, fashion compromising autonomy ‐ one which is more closely tied to what fashion fashion's projective illusion, at how ‐ its extrinsic fashionableness, appears as intrinsic goodness
