Abstract

IN NEWMAN’S EPISTEMOLOGY CERTITUDE IS THE LIMIT OF CUMULATED CONVERGING PROBABILITIES. IT IS REFLEX ASSENT WHICH IS PROVED BY MENTAL IMPLICIT REASONING, WHOSE VERBAL FORMULATION IS SOMETHING SECONDARY. ASSENT IS NOT AN AUTOMATIC RESULT OF SYLLOGISMS. PERFECTION OF PERSONAL FACULTY OF REASONING IN CONCRETE MATTER IS THE ILLATIVE SENSE, WHICH INCLUDES PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, ETHICAL PRESUPPOSITIONS AND USES ANTECEDENT PROBABILITIES. RELIGIOUS PHILOSOPHY: PHENOMENA OF CONSCIENCE MANIFEST A DIVINE LAWGIVER. PHENOMENA OF THE SENSE OF GUILT AND LONGING FOR ATONEMENT POINT TO DIVINE INTERVENTION AND REVELATION. SOCIOLOGY OF KNOWLEDGE: RUDIMENTS IN HIS THEORY OF DOCTRINAL DEVELOPMENT. INFLUENCES AND PARALLELS DO NOT TOUCH NEWMAN’S ORIGINALITY
