Abstract

In this chapter, I explore philosophical and practical dimensions of what I call the “nutrition-home axis”, taking into account historical, scientific, artistic, literary, mythological and popular contexts. What emerges from this interdisciplinary inquiry are a variety of ways in which the ideal of nutrition and of home are understood as fundamental building blocks of human health. Taken together, they are also understood exponentially, as meta-building blocks of wellbeing. Also introduced are numerous and varied levels and contexts in which to consider nutrition and home. For example, the concept of nutrition may be more broadly understood to include considerations of lifestyle, aesthetics, the natural environment and Earth itself. Likewise, the concept of home may be more broadly understood to include considerations of the human body, one’s actual home, the geographic location of one’s home and the whole of planet Earth. In the present chapter, readers are introduced to new and/or perhaps different ways in which to think about nutrition and home. In so doing, it is hoped that they will be inspired to more deeply engage in the ongoing discourse offered by this topic and those that might be related to it, as new paradigms for appreciating the fundamental provisions of nutrition and of home continue to emerge and to inform our understanding of and essential relationship to both. It is also hoped that readers will gain greater insight into the exceeding value of our collective home of planet Earth and its bountiful provisions. Doing so, readers might also gain greater appreciation for the importance of supporting the conditions necessary for the health of the planet and its inhabitants.
