Global Tax Justice and the Resource Curse: What Do Corporations Owe?Zorka Milin - 2014 - Moral Philosophy and Politics 1 (1):17-36.
Tax abuse by multinational extractive corporations should be an important subject of attention for global justice because it exacerbates the unjust global distribution of resources and contributes to the resource curse. The amounts of taxes at stake dwarf the current levels of international aid. This abuse is not necessarily unlawful but is enabled by the interaction of complex international tax rules. It is “abuse” because it contravenes a number of theoretical understandings of global tax justice, several of which are explored (...)

Towards cognitively plausible data science in language research.Petar Milin, Dagmar Divjak, Strahinja Dimitrijević & R. Harald Baayen - 2016 - Cognitive Linguistics 27 (4):507-526.
Over the past 10 years, Cognitive Linguistics has taken a quantitative turn. Yet, concerns have been raised that this preoccupation with quantification and modelling may not bring us any closer to understanding how language works. We show that this objection is unfounded, especially if we rely on modelling techniques based on biologically and psychologically plausible learning algorithms. These make it possible to take a quantitative approach, while generating and testing specific hypotheses that will advance our understanding of how knowledge of (...)

Cultural Mediators’ Contribution to the Reception of Russian Literature in Greece.Zorka Šljivančanin - 2017 - AKROPOLIS: Journal of Hellenic Studies 1:158-168.
The current study explores the contribution of cultural mediators to the dissemination of Russian literature in Greece between 1893 and 1917. More precisely, it examines the case of F. M. Dostoevsky’s reception during this time frame, which can be considered as the period of the writer’s introduction and beginning of his establishment among the Greek readership. The focus is on two types of mediators with a significant influence on the fortune of Dostoevsky and other Russian writers in Greece. The two (...)

Cognitive approaches to uniformity and variability in morphology.Petar Milin, Neil Bermel & James P. Blevins - 2024 - Cognitive Linguistics 35 (2):167-176.
This special issue of Cognitive Linguistics reexamines the notions of uniformity and variability within morphological systems from a cognitive linguistic standpoint. It challenges traditional perspectives that regard morphological variability as mere deviations from the norm, suggesting instead that such variability is systematic and shaped by external influences including language acquisition and processing constraints. The contributions in this issue promote a shift from isolated analysis to a holistic view of paradigms, classes, and systems, advocating for a framework where morphological structures are (...)

Alternative Solutions to a Language Design Problem: The Role of Adjectives and Gender Marking in Efficient Communication.Melody Dye, Petar Milin, Richard Futrell & Michael Ramscar - 2018 - Topics in Cognitive Science 10 (1):209-224.
A central goal of typological research is to characterize linguistic features in terms of both their functional role and their fit to social and cognitive systems. One long-standing puzzle concerns why certain languages employ grammatical gender. In an information theoretic analysis of German noun classification, Dye, Milin, Futrell, and Ramscar enumerated a number of important processing advantages gender confers. Yet this raises a further puzzle: If gender systems are so beneficial to processing, what does this mean for languages that (...)

Construal in language: A visual-world approach to the effects of linguistic alternations on event perception and conception.Srdan Medimorec, Petar Milin & Dagmar Divjak - 2020 - Cognitive Linguistics 31 (1):37-72.
The theoretical notion of ‘construal’ captures the idea that the way in which we describe a scene reflects our conceptualization of it. Relying on the concept of ception – which conjoins conception and perception – we operationalized construal and employed a Visual World Paradigm to establish which aspects of linguistic scene description modulate visual scene perception, thereby affecting event conception. By analysing viewing behaviour after alternating ways of describing location (prepositions), agentivity (active/passive voice) and transfer (NP/pp datives), we found that (...)

Exploring and Exploiting Uncertainty: Statistical Learning Ability Affects How We Learn to Process Language Along Multiple Dimensions of Experience.Dagmar Divjak & Petar Milin - 2020 - Cognitive Science 44 (5):e12835.
While the effects of pattern learning on language processing are well known, the way in which pattern learning shapes exploratory behavior has long gone unnoticed. We report on the way in which individual differences in statistical pattern learning affect performance in the domain of language along multiple dimensions. Analyzing data from healthy monolingual adults' performance on a serial reaction time task and a self‐paced reading task, we show how individual differences in statistical pattern learning are reflected in readers' knowledge of (...)

Behavioral Signatures of Memory Resources for Language: Looking beyond the Lexicon/Grammar Divide.Dagmar Divjak, Petar Milin, Srdan Medimorec & Maciej Borowski - 2022 - Cognitive Science 46 (11):e13206.
Although there is a broad consensus that both the procedural and declarative memory systems play a crucial role in language learning, use, and knowledge, the mapping between linguistic types and memory structures remains underspecified: by default, a dual-route mapping of language systems to memory systems is assumed, with declarative memory handling idiosyncratic lexical knowledge and procedural memory handling rule-governed knowledge of grammar. We experimentally contrast the processing of morphology (case and aspect), syntax (subordination), and lexical semantics (collocations) in a healthy L1 (...)

What makes the past perfect and the future progressive? Experiential coordinates for a learnable, context-based model of tense and aspect.Dagmar Divjak, Petar Milin, Adnane Ez-Zizi & Laurence Romain - 2022 - Cognitive Linguistics 33 (2):251-289.
We examined how language supports the expression of temporality within sentence boundaries in English, which has a rich inventory of grammatical means to express temporality. Using a computational model that mimics how humans learn from exposure we explored what the use of different tense and aspect combinations reveals about the interaction between our experience of time and the cognitive demands that talking about time puts on the language user. Our model was trained on n-grams extracted from the BNC to select (...)

The Myth of Cognitive Decline: Non‐Linear Dynamics of Lifelong Learning.Michael Ramscar, Peter Hendrix, Cyrus Shaoul, Petar Milin & Harald Baayen - 2014 - Topics in Cognitive Science 6 (1):5-42.
As adults age, their performance on many psychometric tests changes systematically, a finding that is widely taken to reveal that cognitive information-processing capacities decline across adulthood. Contrary to this, we suggest that older adults'; changing performance reflects memory search demands, which escalate as experience grows. A series of simulations show how the performance patterns observed across adulthood emerge naturally in learning models as they acquire knowledge. The simulations correctly identify greater variation in the cognitive performance of older adults, and successfully (...)

The role of entrenchment and schematisation in the acquisition of rich verbal morphology.Gordana Hržica, Sara Košutar, Tomislava Bošnjak Botica & Petar Milin - 2024 - Cognitive Linguistics 35 (2):251-287.
Entrenchment and schematisation are the two most important cognitive processes in language acquisition. In this article, the role of the two processes, operationalised by token and type frequency, in the production of overgeneralised verb forms in Croatian preschool children is investigated using a parental questionnaire and computational simulation of language acquisition. The participants of the questionnaire were parents of children aged 3;0–5;11 years (n = 174). The results showed that parents of most children (93 %) reported the parallel use of (...)

(In)visible Actions – Disruptive Practices: Art and Philosophy in the ČSSR 1950–1980.Hana Gründler - 2024 - Journal of Social and Political Philosophy 3 (1):67-84.
It is not well known that in the context of the unofficial artistic and philosophical scene of the ČSSR there was an aesthetically refined and theoretically differentiated reflection on the different degrees and limits of visibility as well as a rethinking of participation – be it aesthetic, epistemic or political. In this paper I first investigate the relation between history and (in)visibility in its broadest sense: questions such as ‘whose history is present’ and ‘what visual memory building strategies are used’ (...)
