  7. Mass imprisonment and economic inequality.Bruce Western - 2007 - Social Research: An International Quarterly 74 (2):509-532.
The growth of penal population through the last decades of the twentieth century reshaped the institutional landscape of American poverty and inequality. The effects of rising incarceration rates have been especially large for young minority men with little schooling. This paper charts the extent of incarceration among young disadvantaged men and describes the effects of the prison boom on American economic inequality. In this paper I will argue that we are currently living in an era of "mass imprisonment." Under mass imprisonment, (...)

Politics and social structure in The Culture of Control.Bruce Western - 2004 - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy 7 (2):33-41.
David Garland's The Culture of Control provides a powerful analysis of trends in crime and criminal justice policy over the last 30 years. This note re?examines two parts of the Garland thesis. First, it argues that punitive criminal justice policy is rooted in an authoritarian neoconservative politics that shares little with free?market ideology. Second, research on the collateral consequences of incarceration suggests that the penal system, at least in America, has become a significant influence on, rather than just a product (...)

    The Effects of Pornography on Unethical Behavior in Business.Nathan W. Mecham, Melissa F. Lewis-Western & David A. Wood - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 168 (1):37-54.
Pornography is no longer an activity confined to a small group of individuals or the privacy of one’s home. Rather, it has permeated modern culture, including the work environment. Given the pervasive nature of pornography, we study how viewing pornography affects unethical behavior at work. Using survey data from a sample that approximates a nationally representative sample in terms of demographics, we find a positive correlation between viewing pornography and intended unethical behavior. We then conduct an experiment to provide causal (...)

    A Right to Strike?K. Jennings & G. Western - 1997 - Nursing Ethics 4 (4):277-282.
During 1995, there was a major shift in the United Kingdom in the debate of whether it is right for nurses to strike. The Royal College of Nursing, the former advocate of a non-industrial action policy, moved towards the UNISON position that industrial action is ethical in some circumstances, as well as the necessary thing to do. The authors, both nurses and UNISON officials, look at the reasons for this change and why UNISON’s historical position sees industrial action as an (...)

Did buddhism ever go east?: The westernization of buddhism in Chad Hansen's daoist historiography.Douglas L. Berger - 2011 - Philosophy East and West 61 (1):38-55.
The scholarly career of Professor Chad Hansen has been devoted in large measure to an elucidation of the relationship between the classical Chinese language and the structure and aims of pre-Qin philosophical thought. His “mass-noun” hypothesis of classical Chinese thought, his notion of dao 道 as “guiding discourse,” and his clarifications of the significance of Mohism are marked achievements from which all of us have benefited immensely. In the opening chapters of A Daoist Theory of Chinese Thought, Hansen prefaces his (...)

Western theology’s whiteness and some Liberation theologies, two sides of the same coin?Sifiso Khuzwayo - 2024 - HTS Theological Studies 80 (2):10.
This article explores how the Western theology often employed by European explorers sought to deify ‘whiteness’. Whiteness as an ideological construction found the ideal tool in Christianity and through supersessionism detached Jesus of Nazareth from his Jewish roots and clothed him in whiteness, thus making white maleness the idol that all creatures must aspire towards. In defiance, liberation theologians, in particular James Cone, coined the possibility that ‘Jesus is black’. Thus, the possibility of Jesus being anything to anyone becomes conceivable. (...)
