Self-Knowledge: Based on Knowledge of the First Cause of Creation.Leon Miller Tallinn - 2019 - Tattva - Journal of Philosophy 11 (1):53-70.
This article argues that Aristotle depicts the soul as a detectable aspect of one’s being, is in the form of properties, and is discernable by cognition. Thus, he proposed that it is possible to discern the complementary connection between one’s being and the first cause of creation. Aristotle, like Kant, recognised that the age-old problem of scepticism posed a challenge to epistemological, ontological, and ethical claims. However, Kant did not develop his ideas regarding bridging the gap between what is demonstrable (...)

Interspecies Relationships and Their Influence on Animal Handling: a Case Study in the Tallinn Zoological Gardens.Mirko Cerrone - 2020 - Biosemiotics 13 (1):115-135.
This paper addresses the biosemiotic dimensions of human relationship with captive animals and aims to uncover how these factors influence handling practices and human-animal interactions within zoological gardens. Zoological gardens are quintessential hybrid environments, and as such, they are places of interspecies interactions and mutual influences. These interactions are profoundly shaped by human attitudes towards animals. The roots of these attitudes can be found at the cultural and institutional levels as well as at the biosemiotic level. Previous studies have suggested (...)

Reliable Old Wineskins: The Applicability of the Just War Tradition to Military Cyber Operations.Edward T. Barrett - 2015 - Philosophy and Technology 28 (3):387-405.
This article argues that the traditional jus ad bellum and jus in bello criteria are fully capable of providing the ethical guidance needed to legitimately conduct military cyber operations. The first part examines the criteria’s foundations by focusing on the notion of liability to defensive harm worked out by revisionist just war thinkers. The second part critiques the necessity of alternative frameworks, which its proponents assert are required to at least supplement the traditional just war criteria. Using the latter, the (...)

  14. Castoriadis against Heidegger: Time and existence.Alexandros Schismenos - 2024 - Montreal: Black Rose Books.
The political actions of Martin Heidegger raise a compelling question to those concerned with philosophy: How was one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century willing to ally himself with Nazism and what does this mean for philosophy? This question has been raised and brushed aside from the end of the Second World War, when Heidegger was formally accused for his involvement with Hitler's regime and forbidden to attain any official teaching position henceforth. Important thinkers, like his colleague (...)

In the 1970s, Voznesenskaia’s involvement with the dissident movement in Leningrad resulted (...)

Ethnic Russian Minority in Estonia.Agata Włodarska-Frykowska - 2016 - International Studies. Interdisciplinary Political and Cultural Journal 18 (2):153-164.
The article examines the position of Russians in Estonia and their relation with ethnic Estonians. The author analyzes models of the society integration introduced by Tallinn after 1991. The results raise questions regarding language education in Estonia, the proficiency level of Estonian is getting widely known by Russians, but on the other hand, there is still a significant part of the population that cannot communicate in Estonian. Those who have a good command of Estonian tend to be better integrated (...)

Bertrand Russell in Estonia.Urmas Sutrop - 2006 - Russell: The Journal of Bertrand Russell Studies 26 (1):55-76.
Abstract:This essay presents first what we know about Russell’s visit to Tallinn (Reval), Estonia, during his trip to Russia in 1920. Unnoticed by his biographers, Russell spent over a week in Estonia (9–11 May and 16–23 June). Secondly, Russell’s personal and intellectual connections with Estonia, including his frequent mentions of the Baltic Barons such as Count Keyserling and jokes about Estonians, will be revealed. These are followed by his involvement with Clifford Allen in Estonia and Dora Black’s visit there. (...)

    Ethical life cycle of an innovation.Mari Meel & Maksim Saat - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 39 (1-2):21 - 27.
Product safety has always been one of the main problems in engineering ethics. At times it has been discussed as primarily a problem of engineering ethics. However the right to safety is one of the four fundamental consumer rights and so it is an important theme also in business ethics. At the same time the problem of product safety is inseparably connected with business effectiveness: how much can we spend on product safety without making our production unprofitable?Below we will present (...)

  22. Friedrich Nietzsche's Influence on the Estonian Intellectual Landscape.Jaanus Sooväli - 2015 - Studia Philosophica Estonica 8 (2):141-155.
In my article, I delineate Friedrich Nietzsche’s influence on Estonian intellectual landscape. As it turns out, this influence has been quite remarkable and extends from literature to politics. I start with outlining several orientations of the reception of Nietzsche’s thought in the world and then suggest that with one exception, all those orientations are to some extent also present in Estonian Nietzsche reception. Nietzsche’s reception in Estonia started rather early and one can say that he was somewhat known in (...) as well as in Tartu even in his lifetime. The first attempt to translate one of his works into Estonian was made already in 1901. Till the Soviet occupation in 1940, Nietzsche’s thought was rather actively appropriated by Estonian writers, intellectuals and even politicians. In Soviet Union, Nietzsche was prohibited and his works were not freely accessible in public libraries. With the restoration of Estonia’s independence in the beginning of 90s, a new, fresh and active wave of Nietzsche reception also begun. New translations appeared and the reception was generally more faithful and philosophical than in the first period. (shrink)

    Mapping civic experiences in Estonia.Anne Kaun - 2012 - Communications 37 (3):253-274.
The article concerns civic experiences beyond or prior to civic action. Approaching questions of civic culture and democracy by way of the rather broad notion of civic experience, the author suggests that democratic values and processes involving citizens’ participation should be understood as deeply anchored in the lifeworld. The article establishes a view in which civic culture is understood from a holistic perspective as an experience. At the same time, the author is interested in the ways in which media are (...)

    Meta-reference in media arts and the interactive instantiation of non-digital artworks.Raivo Kelomees - 2017 - Technoetic Arts 15 (3):353-372.
The aim of this article is to analyse interactive reinterpretations of two of Raul Meel’s artworks. They were created after the original works were made; they reference the original artworks and are meta-referential. These reinterpretations allow the original artworks to be opened and explained and become instantiations of their algorithmic content. The questions that arise in this article are as follows: how can physical artworks be opened up for audiences by means of interactive emulations? How can this serve to document (...)

This personal letter describes the history and current situation of philosophy in Estonia. We sketch the development of academic philosophy since the foundation of Tartu University in 1632, and describe the current philosophical landscape. We discuss the challenges we are facing in trying to find a balance between the responsibility that a discipline in the humanties in a small country has with respect to local culture and society on the one hand, and our ambitions to build up an internationally collaborating (...)

In his Berlin Lectures of the 1820s, the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860) used spatial logic diagrams for philosophy of language. These logic diagrams were applied to many areas of semantics and pragmatics, such as theories of concept formation, concept development, translation theory, clarification of conceptual disputes, etc. In this paper we first introduce the basic principles of Schopenhauer’s philosophy of language and his diagrammatic method. Since Schopenhauer often gives little information about how the individual diagrams are to be understood, (...)
