Anerkennung soll die Leerstelle ausfüllen, die mit dem Zusammenbruch metaphysischer Systeme aufgetreten ist. Die Ethik sozialer Anerkennung wird damit aber mit Erwartungen überfrachtet. Durch technologische Veränderungen verändern sich permanent die Statusbestimmungen: Die Autonomie des Menschen konkurriert mit künstlich-intelligenten Maschinen, die Leidensfähigkeit mit der des Tieres, die Individualität mit der digitalen Selbstinszenierung und die Geschöpflichkeit mit der technologischen Selbstvergöttlichung. Die Beiträge suchen nach Bedingungen sozialer Anerkennung, die nicht zirkulär ausgehandelt werden können, sondern Kategorien einbringen, die auch von Menschen verwendet werden, wenn (...) sie von Gott sprechen. Damit soll die Basis einer theologischen Anerkennungstheorie gelegt werden. (shrink)

Wenn wir davon sprechen, dass etwas sozial unangemessen ist, meinen wir damit in der Regel, dass es keine Übereinstimmung gibt zwischen dem erwarteten Verhalten und dem tatsächlichen Verhalten. Soziale Angemessenheit betrifft dementsprechend Fragestellungen, die (soziale) Normen betreffen. Betrachten wir Angemessenheitskriterien durch die Positionen bestimmter sozialer Gruppen, ist es uns möglich, gruppenspezifische Angemessenheitskriterien zu beleuchten und kritisch zu betrachten. Hier geht es um Fragen wie: Ist mein Verhalten meinem wahrgenommenen Geschlecht angemessen? Mit diesem Blickwinkel wird deutlicher, dass unseren Vorstellungen (...) von sozialer Angemessenheit unter Umständen widersprüchliche Normen zugrunde liegen. Gerade wenn es um gruppenspezifische Fragen zur sozialen Angemessenheit geht, die etwa das Geschlecht, physische und mentale Befähigungen oder die Ethnie einer Person betreffen, kann Dehumanisierung eine Rolle spielen. Moderne Normen, so die Argumentation in diesem Kapitel, berücksichtigen Aspekte der Dehumanisierung, während traditionellere Normen diese tendenziell ignorieren. Hierdurch ergibt sich die Existenz widersprüchlicher Normen rund um soziale Angemessenheit. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird erklärt, wie soziale Angemessenheit und dehumanisierende Interaktionsstrukturen zusammenhängen, um die Frage erörtern zu können, wie widersprüchliche Kriterien für soziale Angemessenheit zustande kommen und wie diese eventuell auch verändert werden können. Hierzu wird das Konzept der Skripte herangezogen. (shrink)

Die aktuelle philosophische Debatte darüber, was ein Leben zu einem sinnvollen Leben macht, wird gemeinhin vor dem Hintergrund einer werttheoretischen Auseinandersetzung innerhalb der übergreifenden Debatte um ein gutes Leben geführt. Ein sinnvolles Leben sei demnach grundsätzlich eines, in dem die Person bestimmten als wertvoll und daher sinnstiftend angesehenen Tätigkeiten nachgeht oder bestimmte zur Sinnstiftung geeignete Werte zu befördern sucht. In meinem Artikel widerspreche ich dieser werttheoretischen Engführung und gehe vielmehr von einer werttheoretisch neutralen Formulierung der Frage nach Sinn im (...) Leben aus: Wie müssen Elemente im Leben einer Person beschaffen sein, damit sie für diese Person eine sinnstiftende Funktion zu entfalten vermögen und die Person daher zu dem begründeten Urteil gelangen kann, dass ihr Leben sinnvoll in dem Sinne ist, als es Sinn im Leben umfasst, wobei dieses Urteil grundsätzlich auch aus der Perspektive Dritter zugänglich und nachvollziehbar bzw. kritisierbar ist? In Auseinandersetzung vor allem mit Susan Wolfs Hybridtheorie eines sinnvollen Lebens argumentiere ich, dass sich die sinnstiftende Funktion von Elementen im Leben in erster Linie durch die soziale Einbettung des eigenen Handelns oder Lebens konstituiert und einsichtig machen lässt: Sinn im Leben konstituiert sich dann, wenn das eigene Handeln oder Leben im Ganzen erstens in einen sozialen Zusammenhang eingebettet ist und man auf diese Weise mit und für andere handelt bzw. lebt sowie einem zweitens diese Einbettung auch wichtig ist. Derart explizierte sinnstiftende Elemente im Leben sind zudem offen für Kritik. Nicht alle sinnstiftenden Elemente sind gleichermaßen wertvoll oder sollten im eigenen Leben und Handeln eine Rolle spielen und verfolgt werden. Dies mag sich aufgrund prudentieller Erwägungen aus der umfassenden Perspektive eines guten und gelungenen Lebens im Ganzen ergeben oder aus einer moralischen Perspektive, wenn die spezifische soziale Einbettung oder die dabei verfolgten Ziele moralisch zu kritisieren sind. Sind meine Überlegungen überzeugend, so sollte man dem werttheoretischen Mainstream der Debatte um Sinn im Leben daher ein gutes Stück weit kritischer gegenüberstehen. (shrink)

Are persons rational because they are self-conscious or are they self-conscious because they are rational? Wittgenstein's remarks on the grammatical peculiarities of first-person expressions are not only a criticism of the conception of a Cartesian Ego but also give rise to systematical extensions which help to answer our question. The distinction between subject- and object-usage of ,,I” – which is made in the ,,Blue Book” – enables Wittgenstein to conceive of sentences like ,,I am in pain” as non-referential expressions. (...) With this distinction, Wittgenstein criticizes the ontological commitment to an Ego which results from the referential usage of ,,I”. Nevertheless, Wittgenstein's distinction stands in need of an addition: We will distinguish an epistemic form of expression from a phenomenal form. On this basis, we can show that self-consciousness systematically builds on rationality – and not the other way around. Competent usage of epistemic-expressive I-sentences is antecedent to talking meaningfully of a self-conscious person. In turn, the competent usage of such sentences is embedded in a social structure. The external appearance of a person is an important predictor for his or her social success. This finding has been verified by numerous mostly social psychological oriented empirical studies on physical attractiveness for many phases and areas of life. At the same time, sociological research on social inequality has hardly paid any attention to the social relevance of physical attractiveness. In order to begin to dose this gap, the article provides insight into attractiveness research results and highlights the importance (...) of further research into the impact of attractiveness on causing social inequality. We will first give an overview of the areas of life in which the efficacy of physical attractiveness has already been demonstrated. Then we will discuss the mechanisms through which the external appearance of a person develops its effect, until finally, we will explain how physical attractiveness can be measured. (shrink)

Agency, Identity, and Integrity (2009), Christine Korsgaard defiende la conclusión de que el imperativo categórico rige la acción humana porque es el único principio que permite alcanzar la unidad psíquica plena, la cual, según Korsgaard, es un prerrequisito esencial para la acción efectiva. Para los agentes humanos, alcanzar esa unidad -que consiste en hacer coherentes distintos impulsos hacia la acción- es una actividad constante, denominada "autoconstitución". Agency, Identity, and Integrity (2009), Christine Korsgaard argues that the categorical imperative rules human action because it is the sole principle that allows us to reach the complete psychic unity that, Korsgaard thinks, is an essential prerequisite for effective action. Reaching this unity -which consists in making cohere diverging impulses for action- is for human agents a constant activity called "self-constitution." According to Korsgaard, this activity is the source of normativity, of human practical identities and even of personal identity. After explaining the main ideas of the book, I present two objections. First, I criticize the linkage of the categorical imperative to successful self-constitution, for not every failure of the latter counts as a moral failure. Second, I argue that the thesis that personal identity is a product of self-constitution is problematic and that it betrays a confusion between practical identity and personal identity. (shrink)

This book discusses the concept of immanent critique, i. e. whether there is a form of critique which neither just applies empirically accepted standards nor independently justified norms but rather reconstructs norms which are immanent to social practices. -/- It surveys both political theories of criticism (Walzer, Taylor, MacIntyre) and contemporary critical theories (Habermas, Honneth) for how they describe such forms of critique and develops a new model of immanent critique. For this purpose, it takes up both contemporary social ontology (...) theories and the discussion about rule-following. The book argues that we can speak of immanent rules as far as persons can practically recognize each other as members of rule-governed practices if they attribute each other defeasible normative authority. -/- Finally, it describes the consequences of the adoption of such a model for our description of a practice of critique and analyzes both first-order immanent critique and the second-order critique of reification. The changing of social realities requires a new discussion about the important theological and philosophical thesis, that the command of charity further is self-evident in modern societies. The article describes some problems of this point of view and prefers an ethical theory, which espacially recognizes the artificial character of social choreographics and intends to show their implikations for a theory of cognition, a concept of anthropology and responsible personal acting.

In speaking of the social dimensions of human experience, we inevitably become involved in the debate regarding how they are to be studied. Should we embrace the first-person perspective, which is that of the phenomenologists, and begin with the experiences composing our directly experienced lifeworld? Alternately, should we follow the lead of natural scientists and take up the third-person perspective? This is the perspective that asserts that we must begin with what is true for everyone, i.e., with what (...) is available to both me and Others. Both perspectives are one sided in that each presupposes the other for its intelligibility. The third-person perspective is Cartesian and, as I show, privileges space, while the first-person perspective is social in Levinas’s sense and presupposes time. Our reality, I argue, embraces both perspectives and is, in fact, set by their intertwining. (shrink)

Der soziale und medizinische Umgang mit „Transsexualität“ (Transidentität) stößt in zunehmendem Maße auf Kritik. Der vorliegende Beitrag geht der Frage nach, welches semantisch-begriffliche „Konzept“ von Transidentität in Deutschland vorherrscht und inwieweit die Konstituenten dieses Konzeptes den Denkhorizont, vor dem die ethischen Implikationen des Phänomens Transidentität verhandelt werden, begrenzen. Es lässt sich zeigen, dass der gegenwärtige Umgang mit Transidentität auf mehreren kaum hinterfragten, gleichwohl systematisch und ethisch problematischen Setzungen basiert. Zu diesen gehören (1) die Pathologisierung von Transidentität und deren weitgehende (...) Überstellung in den Zuständigkeitsbereich der Medizin, (2) die Behauptung eines Primats der chirurgischen Therapie (Vernachlässigung der postoperativen Phase), (3) das Paradigma „Bigenus“, (4) die terminologisch fassbare „Sexualisierung“ des vorliegenden Identitätsproblems und (5) die juristische Vorgabe, wonach der Personenstand an gonadal-morphologischen Kriterien festzumachen ist. Um das Ziel eines ethisch reflektierten und dadurch gesellschaftlich wie medizinisch verantwortungsvollen Umgangs mit Transidentität ernsthaft verfolgen zu können, ist es zunächst erforderlich, die bezeichneten Setzungen in einem offen geführten Diskurs auf den Prüfstand zu stellen. Erst das Ergebnis einer solchen Prüfung kann den Weg für einen zeitgemäßeren, medizinethisch belastbaren (reflektierten) Umgang mit Transidentität ebnen. (shrink)

Brand criticizes Husserl’s remarks about motivation by saying that Husserl failed to analyse this phenomenon: "The fundamental nature of this phenomenon is claimed rather than demonstrated and not developed at all." It seems to me that this is the best way to criticize Brand’s own book on the mythological meaning of social processes. The basic character of such meaning is merely claimed rather than demonstrated. This singular lack of critical analysis vitiates whatever positive contributions Gesellschaft und persönliche Geschichte might have (...) made. Brand starts out with a critique of the theoretical attitude and of scientific objectivism and the corresponding objective world against which he poses the personal attitude and the personal-mythological lifeworld. His critique consists mainly in a presentation of some points of Husserl’s analysis and critique of objectivistic science. The correctness of Husserl’s assessment and critique of scientific research is taken for granted. It is presented in annoyingly general and vague terms. Brand gives hardly more than theses and titles. What strikes me most is the absence of attempts to explain, to argue, to demonstrate and to give direct evidence for Husserlian positions. In most cases we are offered mere "Andeutungen" of issues, questions, problems, and promised solutions. The philosophical style of parts one and two would likely appear unbearably dogmatic for British and American readers. Brand simply gives definitions, rather than lead the reader along his path of reasoning. Either you see the truth of a point made or you do not; he hardly attempts to help you to understand. In short, I do not think that parts one and two communicate anything worthwhile. It might still make sense to approach the sciences today the way Husserl did some forty years ago, however, it makes little sense to do it the way Brand does. He often presents for rebuttal positions which have long been overcome in Anglo-Saxon philosophy of science, even in German philosophy of science. This "isolationist" approach will cause readers to put the book aside after the first few pages. Part three is even more dogmatic. Most of the time Brand merely presents, in rather vague terms and generalities, the "results" of the research and analyses of others without even indicating factual evidence or reasonable arguments. His "arguments" usually consist in paraphrases and quotations from others, quotations which give conclusions of investigations, analyses, etc., which, without any indication of their supportive evidence, appear as unwarranted affirmations. Sometimes Brand is even content to give summaries of summaries of books of others. Occasionally Brand admits that all he has given so far is merely an indication or bare outline, and that a thorough analysis will have to provide the required evidence. However, only a chain of unwarranted claims and speculations about generalities follows; for example, Brand introduces a quote from Ricoeur by saying that Ricoeur "indicates" in it such and such, and then, in the next paragraph it turns out that the "thorough analysis" promised on the preceding page consists in nothing but that reference to Ricoeur. Brand’s book is one of those examples of "phenomenology" which discredits the phenomenological movement among serious philosophers and scientists by confusing phenomenology with that type of speculative philosophy against which phenomenology, with its maxim: "To the things themselves!," originally was conceived of as a counter-movement. A cardinal tenant of phenomenology is to avoid description without demonstrating the object. And this is, precisely, what Brand’s book does not avoid. He characterizes the mythological meaning of social processes throughout the book without such demonstration. Consequently, I think that Brand’s book harms rather than helps the phenomenological movement.—H. S. (shrink)

This study investigates the impact of fraud/lawsuit revelation on U.S. top executive turnover and compensation. It also examines potential explanatory variables affecting the executive turnover and compensation among U.S. fraud/lawsuit firms. Four important findings are documented. First, there was significantly higher executive turnover among U.S. firms with fraud/lawsuit revelation in the Wall Street Journal than matched firms without such revelation. Second, although on average, U.S. top executives received an increase in cash compensation after fraud/lawsuit revelation, this increase is smaller than (...) that of matched non-fraud/lawsuit firms. Third, fraud/lawsuit firms were more likely to change top executive when chief executive officer (CEO) was not the board chairman and CEO had been on the board for a short time. Fourth, fraud/lawsuit firms were more likely to reduce their executive cash compensation when profitability was low, firms were involved in fraud, the compensation committee size was small, and the board met more often. These findings indicate that although, in general, U.S. fraud/lawsuits firms did not reduce their executive cash compensation, those involved in fraud were more likely to reduce their executive cash compensation than to change their top executives. The finding, that ethical standards is not a significant factor for U.S. executive turnover nor compensation reduction, suggests that ethics appears to play no part in the board’s decisions, and that U.S. firms may have ethical standards in writing but they do not implement nor enforce the standards. I have little to say on this passage, where it seems necessary to maintain the vulgate notwith standing its obvious defects. My only reason for discussing it is to call attention to the strangeness of Jebb's proceeding when seeking to support Hermann's conjecture παλλλοιν which he admits into the text. The objection to Hermann's view is that, as he himself admits, there is no evidence that πáλληλος could be used in the sense of λληλιφóνος. For that, I suppose, is the (...) meaning of ‘mutual hands,’ which both Jebb and Campbell suggest as a translation, although ‘mutual violence’ would be better. But the chief purpose of this note is to protest against the mode of interpretation applied to Philo de Mose 3. 36. II. p. 175 M. διà τàς ν δασι καí πνρì γνιμéνας συνχς καì παλλλονς φθορáς Turnebu s rightl yrenders ‘alternas interneciones,’ and why Jebb supposes him to have meant ‘mutual’ I do not know. Anyhow he admits that Philo used the word in its ordinary sense of successive, and proceeds to paraphrase ‘owing to the continuous and rapid succession of calamities by flood and fire’ . All this is quite beside the mark, for the reference is to the alternate destruction of the world at the κπρωσις by fire and at the ξγρωσιςby water. I must take leave to refer to the evidence collected in my book on Zeno and Cleanthes, p. 253, to which should be added a most instructive passage of Origen : περì τν κακν λóγος ο μνóντων ì ν τατᾦ διà τν τοι τηροσαν τà πì γ$$$ς πρóνοιαν κατακλνσμο καì κπνρ03CE;σσι καθαíρονσαν.Add the passages from Lucan quoted by Mr. Heitland in his Introduction, p. xliii.
