This manuscript reports on a landmark symposium on the ethical, legal and technical challenges of xenotransplantation in the UK. King’s College London, with endorsement from the British Transplantation Society (BTS), and the European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT), brought together a group of experts in xenotransplantation science, ethics and law to discuss the ethical, regulatory and technical challenges surrounding translating xenotransplantation into the clinical setting. The symposium was the first of its kind in the UK for 20 years. This paper (...) summarises the content of the expert lectures showcasing the progress which has been made in xenotransplantation including—the history of xenotransplantation, advances in gene edited animals and progress towards clinical xenotransplantation. We then set out the ethical and legal issues still to be resolved. Finally, we report the themes of the roundtable discussion highlighting areas of consensus and controversy. While the detail of the legal discussion was directed towards the UK, the principles and summary reported here are intended to be applicable to any jurisdiction seeking to implement clinical xenotransplantation. René Thom scrute les propriétés qu'on peut assigner à tout lieu, et désigne la question de ses bords, celle des extrémités. Il s'interroge sur la théorie aristotélicienne des lieux que la transposition topologique éclaire. Des réflexions sur le lieu propre à un animal et des impressions de voyage de Marcel Proust étayent la construction.

It is our intention in this article to reconsider a text written shortly before his death by the founder of our Society, Pierre Delattre. In it he apparently proposed that the biological meanings of the word function were derived from the mathematical use of the word, a particularization.We claim, on the contrary, that it is the mathematical use of function that comes from its sociological and biological meanings. For this we go back to the etymology of the word. Function comes (...) from the Latin verbfungi (in the first person,fungor). Fungor (a deponent verb form) already has a factitive meaning, I am made to do, and it applies to a functionary, a civil servant engaged in some specific social (or political, or military) task. Hence such a meaning presupposes the existence of a social structure able to compel individuals to undertake a specific task of common interest. The Latin verb can also be applied to a tool, made to function in the interest of man. Thus the meaning offungi requires a preexisting social or biological organization. The function aims to correct the dysfunctions of the global system, whether political or biological. (shrink)

RésuméCet exposé vise à replacer l'ensemble de la pensée mathématique dans le cadre biologique et anthropologique d'une théorie de l'évolution. La pensée mathématique s'est développée chez l'homme sous la nécessité de simuler les processus du monde extérieur, simulation plus fine que celle fournie par le langage usuel. Mais elle présente par rapport à l'infrastructure biologique l'innovation radicale de structures arithmétiques et algébriques fondées sur l'itération indéfinie d'une opération. Cet exposé comporte deux parties: la première rappelle comment Ferdinand Gonseth comprenait ce terme de Référentiel qu'il avait auparavant introduit. La deuxième s'efforcera de préciser quelque peu cette notion par une interprétation topologico‐dynamique.

René Thom (1923-2002) est l'un des plus grands mathématiciens français. Médaille Fields (équivalent du prix Nobel) en 1958 pour ses travaux de topologie différentielle, il élabore au début des années 1970 la " théorie des catastrophes ", ou comment " un phénomène discontinu peut émerger en quelque sorte spontanément à partir d'un milieu continu ", dont l'influence a largement excédé les sciences dures. Dans ces entretiens, qui vont de la mathématique à l'embryologie, de la linguistique à l'anthropologie et à l'histoire, (...) René Thom expose les grandes lignes de la théorie des catastrophes (où la continuité d'un système se trouve soudain rompue) et passe en revue, avec acuité et passion, les grands thèmes scientifiques de notre époque, de la physique atomique à la biologie moléculaire, du " progrès " scientifique et technologique aux relations complexes entre la société et la science.
