In literature as well as in nursing practice a growing concern about nurses’ ethical competence can be observed. Based on the cognitive theory of moral development by Kohlberg, this research examined nursing students’ ethical behaviour in five nursing dilemmas. Ethical behaviour refers not only to the ethical reasoning of nursing students but also to the relationship between reasoning and behaviour. Kohlberg’s definition of morality was refined by adding a care perspective. The results show that the majority of students can be (...) located in the fourth moral stage according to Kohlberg’s theory, that is, the conventional level of moral development. This finding implies that students are still guided by professional rules, norms and duties, and have not (yet) succeeded in making personal ethical decisions on the basis of their own principles and acting according to such decisions. The problem of simultaneous measurement of incompatible observables in quantum mechanics is studied on the one hand from the viewpoint of an axiomatic treatment of quantum mechanics and on the other hand starting from a theory of measurement. It is argued that it is precisely such a theory of measurement that should provide a meaning to the axiomatically introduced concepts, especially to the concept of observable. Defining an observable as a class of measurement procedures yielding a certain prescribed result for (...) the probability distribution of the set of values of some quantity (to be described by the set of eigenvalues of some Hermitian operator), this notion is extended to joint probability distributions of incompatible observables. It is shown that such an extension is possible on the basis of a theory of measurement, under the proviso that in simultaneously measuring such observables there is a disturbance of the measurement results of the one observable, caused by the presence of the measuring instrument of the other observable. This has as a consequence that the joint probability distribution cannot obey the marginal distribution laws usually imposed. This result is of great importance in exposing quantum mechanics as an axiomatized theory, since overlooking it seems to prohibit an axiomatic description of simultaneous measurement of incompatible observables by quantum mechanics. A polemical and reductionist critical response to Skinner and Pocock has inhibited an appreciation of the true potential of their historiographical discussions for the practice of political theories. An important step in understanding the history of political thought in its duality - as both being about acts of political discourse over time and as itself being political - is to recognize the "traditionary" nature of discursive acts. Following Pocock and Skinner, we should speak not of tradition as objects carried on, (...) but of the nature of that carrying on, that activity of handing down through language. A traditionary act involves subscription to a fairly sophisticated account of the development of a particular form of practices through time and the identification by the actor of his act as part of that development. This subscription allows us to overcome the categorical dichotomies such as history versus philosophy, autonomy of texts versus ideas as expressions of social relations, voluntarism versus determinism, and language as either restrictive or instrumental, which underlie much of the contemporary methodological dispute. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist die umgearbeitete Fassung einer Disser tation, die im Sommersemester 1964 von der Philosophischen Fa kultiit der Universitat KOln angenommen wurde. In der Dissertation standen die beiden folgenden Problembereiche im Zentrum der Betrachtung: die Funktion des teleologischen Geschichtsdenkens flir die transzendentale Phanomenologie und Husserls Riickgang auf die vorwissenschaftliche Lebenswelt, so wie er sich aus der Epoche von den objektiven Wissenschaften ergibt. Diese Themen sind in die umfassenderen Zusammenhange dieser Untersuchung eingegangen. Ihre Aufgabe ist es, Husserls Spatwerk in (...) seiner Ein heitlichkeit und Geschlossenheit aus dem Blickpunkt des Riick ganges von der objektiven Wissenschaft auf die Lebenswelt in einer neuen Perspektive sichtbar werden zu lassen. Sie gibt von dieser Warte aus einen Durchblick durch Husserls Spatphilosophie. Ich mochte an dieser Stelle Herrn Professor Dr. Ludwig Land grebe flir seine Forderung meiner Bemiihungen urn die Endgestalt des Husserlschen Denkens danken. Ein Resultat der europäischen Geschichte ist die Trennung eines Wissens von Welt und Mensch und von durch die menschliche Situation in der Welt bedingten Sinnwelten. Gegen die Einschränkung von Sinnwelten auf Enklaven in der Welt stemmen sich Sinnwelten, welche die Welt transzendieren. Ihr Wirkpotential ist durch das Weltwerden so frei gesetzt, dass es sich den Anhängern solcher Sinnwelten als insuffizient, als sinnbedürftig ausnimmt. Beide Seiten mögen dem geschichts zeitlichen Weltwerden wesentlich zukommen und den Menschen zwie-spältig machen. Ihre Einigung zur Einheit (...) der Mensch, die alle Menschen umfasst, ist in dem anstehenden Punkt unangebracht. Heutige Versuche, Totalisierungsbewe gungen zu vollziehen, haben den gesamten Unterscheidungen Rechnung zu tragen. (shrink)

Das geschichtszeitliche Weltwerden, so wie es in Staaten als politisch-sozialen Großgebilden kulminiert, ist auf konkurrenzielle-polemische Vielheit angewiesen. Sie ist erforderlich für die Ausschöpfung von Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten in offenen zeitlichen Horizonten. In der Moderne hat sie zu ausdifferenzierten Gesellschaften geführt, deren soziale Felder Eigengesetzlichkeiten unterstehen. Die diesen innewohnende Dynamik lässt keine ihnen übergeordneten Einheitsinstanzen zu, die sie zu stark regulieren. Wo finden sich in dieser Situation die Individuen wieder? Wie kommen sie in ihrer Selbstwertigkeit zu ihrem Recht? Theoretische Positionen können sich so (...) verfassten Gesellschaften gegenüber verschieden einregulieren. Wohin sollen sie den Akzent legen: auf ihre selbstwertig-selbständigen Individuen oder auf die eigengesetzliche Dynamik ihrer Subsysteme und deren globale Verflechtung? (shrink)

Though the impetus for psychoanalytic and group analytic in-patient psychotherapy largely came from Britain, it is in Germany that this work has been supported, developed and researched to a greater extent than elsewhere. In _Psychoanalytic Therapy in the Hospital Setting_ Paul Janssen describes the different models which have been tried and evaluated and explains his own integrative model in detail, illustrating it with vivid clinical vignettes. The author also shows that in-patient groups are particularly effective in the treatment of severe (...) personality disorders, borderline conditions and psychosomatic illness. Les décisions politiques sur les risques environnementaux complexes font fréquemment intervenir des éléments scientifiques contestés. Il n’y a généralement pas de « faits » qui conduisent à une politique correcte unique. Les éléments de preuve qui sont intégrés dans les avis scientifiques destinés à une décision politique nécessitent une évaluation de leur qualité. En 2003, l’Agence néerlandaise d’évaluation environnementale a adopté une méthode standardisée, désignée sous le nom de « guide », dans le cadre de laquelle les principaux aspects de (...) la production et de l’utilisation des connaissances sont présentés grâce à une liste de contrôle visant à l’évaluation et à la communication des incertitudes. Dans cet article, nous présentons des résultats de l’application de ce guide à la controverse sur les risques des particules en suspension. La délibération active sur l’incertitude dans un contexte d’expertise entraîne un processus d’apprentissage commun entre les experts et les décideurs politiques, ce qui conduit à une meilleure prise de conscience du phénomène d’incertitude et de ses implications politiques.Policy decisions on complex environmental risks often involve disputed science. Typically, there are no “ facts” to support a single unequivocally correct policy. The evidence provided in scientific studies for policy-making decisions requires high-quality assessment. In 2003, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency adopted a standardized method, referred to as “guidelines”, whereby key quality aspects of knowledge production and use are presented in the form of a checklist for uncertainty assessments and communication. In this article, we present the outcomes of applying the guidelines in controversies on the risks of ambient particulate matter. In the policy–advisory context, active deliberation on uncertainty produces a common learning process for advisors and policy makers, which leads to a deeper understanding and increased awareness of the phenomenon of uncertainty and its policy implications.
