In proof-theoretic semantics, meaning is based on inference. It may be seen as the mathematical expression of the inferentialist interpretation of logic. Much recent work has focused on base-extension semantics, in which the validity of formulas is given by an inductive definition generated by provability in a ‘base’ of atomic rules. Base-extension semantics for classical and intuitionistic propositional logic have been explored by several authors. In this paper, we develop base-extension semantics for the classical propositional modal systems K, KT , (...) K4, and S4, with □ as the primary modal operator. We establish appropriate soundness and completeness theorems and establish the duality between □ and a natural presentation of ♢. We also show that our semantics is in its current form not complete with respect to euclidean modal logics. Our formulation makes essential use of relational structures on bases. (shrink)

With the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in our lives, the ethical implications of AI have received attention from various communities. Building on previous work on trust in people and technology, we advance a multidimensional, multilevel conceptualization of trust in AI and examine the relationship between trust and ethics using the data from a survey of a national sample in the U.S. This paper offers two key dimensions of trust in AI—human-like trust and functionality trust—and presents a multilevel conceptualization (...) of trust with dispositional, institutional, and experiential trust each significantly correlated with trust dimensions. Along with trust in AI, we examine perceptions of the importance of seven ethics requirements of AI offered by the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group. Then the association between ethics requirements and trust is evaluated through regression analysis. Findings suggest that the ethical requirement of societal and environmental well-being is positively associated with human-like trust in AI. Accountability and technical robustness are two other ethical requirements, which are significantly associated with functionality trust in AI. Further, trust in AI was observed to be higher than trust in other institutions. Drawing from our findings, we offer a multidimensional framework of trust that is inspired by ethical values to ensure the acceptance of AI as a trustworthy technology. (shrink)

BackgroundLittle is known about volunteers from Northern research settings who participate in vaccine trials of highly infectious diseases with no approved treatments. This article explores the motivations of HIV immunocompromised study participants in Canada who volunteered in a Phase II clinical trial that evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of an Ebola vaccine candidate.MethodsObservation at the clinical study site and semi-structured interviews employing situational and discursive analysis were conducted with clinical trial participants and staff over one year. Interviews were recorded, transcribed (...) and analysed using critical qualitative interpretivist thematic analytical techniques. Patterns were identified, clustered and sorted to generate distinct and comprehensive themes. We then reassembled events and contexts from the study participants’ stories to develop two ideal portraits based on "composite characters" based on study participants features. These provide ethnographically rich details of participants’ meaningful social worlds while protecting individual identities.ResultsTen of the 14 clinical trial participants, and 3 study staff were interviewed. Participant demographics and socio-economic profiles expressed limited contextual diversity. Half were men who have sex with men, half were former injection drug users experiencing homelessness, one was female, none were racialized minorities and there were no people from HIV endemic countries. Fully 90% had previous involvement in other clinical studies. Their stories point to particular socio-economic situations that motivated their participation as clinical labor through trial participation.ConclusionsOur findings support Fisher’s argument of “structural coercion” in clinical trial recruitment of vulnerable individuals experiencing precarious living conditions. Clinical trials should provide more detail of the structural socio-economic conditions and healthcare needs which lie “under consent” of study participants. Going well beyond an overly convenient narrative of altruism, ethical deliberation frameworks need to sufficiently address the structural conditions of clinical trials. We offer concrete possibilities for this and acknowledge that further research and clinical data should be made available underlying study participant contexts with regards to recruitment and participation in resource poor settings, in both the South and the North. Drug exceptional access programs (DEAPs) exist across Canada to address gaps in access to pharmaceuticals. These programs circumvent standard procedures, raising epistemic, economic, social and political issues. This commentary provides insights into these issues by revealing the context and procedures on which these programs depend.

Contractualist moral theories are often criticized on the grounds that they have counterintuitive implications for moral status. In this paper I attempt to provide a comprehensive answer to the question: What forms of contractualism face this problem, and how serious is the problem? To do this I develop a classification of different kinds of contractualist theory, based on philosophical motivation.

La généalogie de l’art à partir de l’Absolu, (...) en laquelle consiste une telle construction, en est aussi la reconstitution, dans l’horizon marqué d’historicité d’une théogonie (ou histoire des dieux) où l’apparition des dieux signale l’avènement de la forme. Dans quelle mesure la philosophie de l’art de Schelling demeure-t-elle comme une écharde dans la chair de l’esthétique? Est-on fondé à parler d’une réception à son propos? This study examines whether mortality of two adjacent siblings in families is age-specific and is modified by the MCH78, 198590 in the treatment (MCH–FP) and comparison areas. Logistic regression was used to estimate the net effects of survival status of elder siblings on mortality of younger siblings in the neonatal, postneonatal and toddler periods, controlling for birth order, previous birth interval, maternal age, education and religion, household possession of valuable items and sex of the child.

David mène cette investigation cruciale, en mettant en évidence l'occultation croissante du nom par le nombre dans le cours de la pensée occidentale et à laquelle ne peut dès lors qu'échapper l'incalculable. Il s'agit donc d'interroger et de mettre en question la constitution de la rationalité occidentale comme computatio ou calcul visant à tout faire entrer en ligne de compte - autrement dit les ressorts de notre époque et de notre monde. Cet essai inattendu, dérangeant, fort de bout en bout, fait droit au pouvoir d'interpellation de la pensée de Heidegger lorsqu'elle se demande et nous demande en quoi le vacarme des machines et la soufflerie des ordinateurs couvrent aujourd'hui la voix de Dieu. Kant et Schelling ont fait valoir les droits de l’imagination productive comme pouvoir de fiction auquel toute connaissance est redevable. Pareille réhabilitation pourrait être une clef pour comprendre dans quelle mesure l’œuvre de Proust repose sur la ferme conviction que l’art est ce qu’il y a de plus réel et fait appel à une géométrie projective où Albertine apparaît comme centre générateur d’une « immense construction ».

Qu'est-ce qui oriente la philosophie? Depuis Platon, le philosophe est celui qui tourne son regard vers le Bien et qui adopte une manière de vivre en accord avec sa pensée. Qu'est devenue cette manière de vivre comme exigence philosophique, pour un philosophe qui se laisse inspirer par la révélation chrétienne? Faut-il la nommer "sainteté"? Cet ouvrage présente six philosophes du XXe siècle qui ont cherché à accorder leur pensée et leur manière de vivre : Maurice Blondel, Erich Przywara, Simone Weil, (...) Aimé Forest, Michel Henry, Edith Stein. Des philosophes à l'écoute d'une inspiration qui oriente leur existence. La philosophie comme un acte de résistance spirituelle. L’art – qu’est-ce à dire? Pourquoi Heidegger semble-t-il considérer, avec Hegel, mais peut-être en un sens différent, qu’il n’y a plus d’art? Pourquoi est-il allé, en son cheminement avec ou vers la peinture, de Van Gogh à Cézanne et Paul Klee? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions abordées et envisagées ici.

Fragile states have been raising increasing concern among donors since the mid-2000s. The policies of the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis have not excluded fragile states, and this source has provided financing for these countries according to standardized procedures. They represent interesting cases for exploring the meaning and role of measurement in a globalized context. Measurement in the field of HIV/AIDS and its treatment has given rise to a private outsourcing of expertise and auditing, thereby creating a (...) new form of value based on the social process of registration and the creation of realities produced by the intervention itself. These “scriptural economies” must be questioned in terms of the production of knowledge, but also in terms of social justice. Governing HIV/AIDS treatments by numbers in a fragile state is explored in this article through the experience of the Central African Republic in terms of epidemiology and access to antiretroviral drugs. The unexpected effects of performance-based programs in this context underline the need for global health governance to be re-embedded into a social justice framework. (shrink)

Notre pensée s'enlise lorsqu'elle ne s'écarte plus de ses habitudes. Notre vie également. Par quelle stratégie interroger les grandes idées qui ont fait l'Europe, et qui semblent aujourd'hui en panne, pour redonner de l'élan et de l'allant à notre pensée et à notre vie? Comment ouvrir de nouveaux possibles? C'est en construisant un patient dialogue entre l'Europe et la Chine que le philosophe et sinologue François Jullien trace un chemin dans la pensée. Si la Chine est devenue la première puissance (...) économique mondiale, on ne saurait oublier qu'elle porte une tradition plus de trois fois millénaire qui déploie des manières de penser tout à fait déroutantes pour nous, Occidentaux, nous permettant de réinterroger nos partis pris et de retrouver prise sur notre pensée. Cet ouvrage introduit avec clarté et rigueur à la pensée de François Jullien. Il intéressera aussi bien ceux qui connaissent déjà ses travaux que tous ceux qui sont en quête d'un renouveau de la philosophie et se demandent comment, entre Chine et Europe, entretenir le dialogue, ouvrir des possibles et déployer des ressources pour vivre. Dans l’un de ses cahiers, en 1935, Simone Weil note pour elle-même : « Tu ne pourrais pas être née à une meilleure époque que celle-ci où on a tout perdu. » ( OC VI 1, p. 118 1 ). Une telle phrase indique une attitude : s’inscrire exactement dans le monde moderne, et s’en relever. Car il ne s’agit pas de revenir en arrière : celle qui met sa pensée et sa vie au service de ceux qui sont écrasés (...) par la force, en bas de l’échelle sociale, qui diagnostique le présent et fustige « la civilisation moderne » et « ses poisons » n’est ni traditionaliste, ni réactionnaire. Estelle antimoderne? S’inscrit-elle dans une telle filiation? Cette catégorie peut-elle fournir un principe d’intelligibilité pour son œuvre? Cette question fournit l’occasion d’examiner le rapport de S. Weil à la modernité. (shrink)

In Heidegger’s Four Notebooks I and II (Black Notebooks 1947-1950), edited as volume 99 of the Gesamtausgabe of his writings, the author remarks that “One God, who as a unique God does not tolerate other Gods apart from him is outside divinity ”, the latter obviously referring to the Bible’s passage found in Exodus 34: 14 : “For you shalt worship no other God: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”. But how does Heidegger come to (...) say that? How does he come to deny the divinity of the one God? This seems to be at first sight a radical criticism of the so-called ‘monotheism’. A major question remains unanswered, nonetheless: the sense in which the Jewish tradition focuses on the “One God”. In this context, “one” is actually not a number but a name. Far from being one of God’s attributes, it is God’s Name. It is a common ground that Heidegger had no access to the Hebrew text of the Bible, a biased situation which leads us to narrow-minded consequences regarding the ‘Old Testament’, where God is frequently called Elohim, i. e. a plural. Is the Jewish God exclusive, or rather Heidegger’s conception of Judaism restrictive? That is the question. (shrink)
