This paper reports a psychological study of human categorization that looked at the procedures used by expert scientists when dealing with puzzling items. Five professional botanists were asked to specify a category from a set of positive and negative instances. The target category in the study was defined by a feature that was unusual, hence situations of uncertainty and puzzlement were generated. Subjects were asked to think aloud while solving the tasks, and their verbal reports were analyzed. A number of (...) problem solving strategies were identified, and subsequently integrated in a model of knowledge‐guided inductive categorization. Our model proposes that expert knowledge influences the subjects' reasoning in more complex ways than suggested by earlier investigations of scientific reasoning. As in previous studies, domain knowledge influenced our subjects' hypothesis generation and testing; but, additionally, it played a central role when subjects revised their hypotheses. (shrink)

This voice, which is sometimes missed, as in the cinema that Chion calls “deaf” rather than “silent”, sometimes dismissed, as in the “100% all-talking” cinema, still wanders on the screen as if in an interval, in search of recognition with regard to its double, the moving image. El «saber sobre sí mismo» es una cuestión controvertida desde los orígenes de la filosofía occidental. Fue consigna de carácter filosófico en Sócrates. Posteriormente, su tratamiento es diverso en S. Agustín, en Descartes, en el idealismo, hasta la actualidad. En este trabajo pensamos en lo que ha dicho Xavier Zubiri del saber inmediato sobre sí mismo. En la intelección sentiente, en su primer modo o primordial, uno mismo se presenta a sí mismo como «mí», «realidad mía», o «intimidad». «Realidad psicosomática». (...) Una intimidad «enigmática » en la que resuena la «voz de la conciencia» proveniente del poder de lo real en cuanto tal, fundamento de la realidad personal del «mí». En sentimiento afectante, el enigma de la realidad del «mí» se manifiesta en su «in-quietud» constituyente. Y en voluntad tendente, mi realidad inquieta y guiada por la «voz de la conciencia», ha de adoptar necesariamente alguna «forma de realidad». (shrink)

They all were invited papers except the one by Peter Juel Henrichsen, a contributed paper tllat merited tlle IBERDROLA - Gipuzkoako Foru Aldundia: Best Paper Award, set up in ICCS-95 for the first time. La identidad cultural ha sido abordada desde diferentes disciplinas científicas, se va construyendo desde disímiles ángulos, de aquí que los referentes teóricos para su estudio procedan de diversas áreas del saber. Aunque no es un tema exclusivamente latinoamericano, es justamente América Latina uno de los lugares en que el análisis de esta problemática ha sido más polémico. El artículo presenta los resultados de un diagnóstico del estado de la identidad cultural de los estudiantes de la Preparatoria No.1, de la Universidad (...) Autónoma de Nuevo León, y propone un modelo pedagógico para el desarrollo de este fenómeno. Cultural identity has been studied from different scientific disciplines and considered from various perspectives. The theoretical references of its study come from diverse areas of knowledge. Being not exclusively a Latin American theme, Latin America is exactly one of the places that provide a controversial analysis. This article deals with the results of a study on cultural identity in students registered in the Preparatory n. 1, at the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, and presents an educational model for its development. Uno de los méritos de este libro se basa precisamente en que ofrece una visión global de un area de la Inteligencia Artificial tan fundamental como es el de la Representación del Conocimiento. Como apunta el propio autor, se trata de una introducción desde la perspectiva (...) de la Inteligencia Artificial de las cuestiones fundamentales de la representación del conocimiento, aunque en algunos capítulos se discuten también acercamientos desde la psicología cognitiva. Si bien la extensión de las cuestiones puede parecer limitada en muchos casos, esta brevedad queda compensada por la amplitud y lo acertado de las referencias. The authors of Beziau and Franceschetto work with logics that have the property of not satisfying any of the formulations of the principle of non contradiction, Béziau and Franceschetto also analyze, among the three-valued logics, which of these logics satisfy this property. They prove that there exist only four of such logics, but only two of them are worthwhile to study. The language of these logics does not consider implication as a connective. However, the enrichment of a language with an (...) implication connective leads us to more interesting systems, therefore we look for one implication for these logics and we study further properties that the logics obtain when this connective is added to these systems. In memoriam José Arrazola Ramírez The logic $\textbf{G}^{\prime}_3$ was introduced by Osorio et al. in 2008; it is a three-valued logic, closely related to the paraconsistent logic $\textbf{CG}^{\prime}_3$ introduced by Osorio et al. in 2014. The logic $\textbf{CG}^{\prime}_3$ is defined in terms of a multi-valued semantics and has the property that each theorem in $\textbf{G}^{\prime}_3$ is a theorem in $\textbf{CG}^{\prime}_3$. Kripke-type semantics has been given to $\textbf{CG}^{\prime}_3$ in two different ways by Borja et al. in 2016. In this work, (...) we continue the study of $\textbf{CG}^{\prime}_3$, obtaining a Hilbert-type axiomatic system and proving a soundness and completeness theorem for this logic. (shrink)

We propose an extension of answer sets, that we call safe beliefs, that can be used to study several properties and notions of answer sets and logic programming from a more general point of view. Our definition, based on intuitionistic logic and following ideas from D. Pearce [Stable inference as intuitionistic validity, Logic Programming 38 79–91], also provides a general approach to define several semantics based on different logics or inference systems. We prove that, in particular, intuitionistic logic can be (...) replaced with any other proper intermediate logic without modifying the resulting semantics. We also show that the answer set semantics satisfies an important property, the “extension by definition”, that can be used to construct program translations. As a result we are able to provide a polynomial translation from propositional theories into the class of disjunctive programs. (shrink)

O presente artigo discutirá as origens e os desdobramentos do revisionismo no pensamento historiográfico sobre a Guerra do Paraguai, ressaltando a posição do político e escritor argentino Juan Bautista Alberdi como peça chave na gênese desse movimento de interpretação da guerra. Sem desvalorizar o papel de revisionistas históricos como O’Leary e Baéz, argumentamos que é nos escritos de Alberdi que encontramos a gênese mais bem definida do pensamento revisionista que iria assumir diversas cores político argumentativas ao longo dos (...) séculos XIX e XX. Concluímos que, ao interpretar a Guerra do Paraguai como uma continuidade das guerras intestinas argentinas, Alberdi inaugura um modelo interpretativo que, explorado à exaustão, definirá o Paraguai como vítima de uma agressão desmedida e baluarte da causa americana. Many of the policies that shaped Argentinean politics and society in the second half of the nineteenth century, most notably the project behind the 1853 constitution and its proposed immigration policies, can be traced to lawyer, publicist and political thinker Juan Bautista Alberdi (1810-84). In this article I chart the modifications in the way Alberdi appropriates French Doctrinaire thought. I argue that while in the young Alberdi we see a strong emphasis on the historicist element of Doctrinarism, (...) on later stages Alberdi reduces Doctrinaire thought to its central sociological thesis. It is this impoverished version of French Doctrinaire thought conjoined with a number of negative appraisals about the Argentinean population, which led eventually to his proposal to rely on demographic engineering as a means for infusing life into Argentina's democratic constitution.
