Research Bioethics in the Ugandan Context: A Program Summary.Sana Loue, David Okello & Medi Kawuma - 1996 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 24 (1):47-53.
Researchers, scientists, and physicians in Uganda have become increasingly aware of the need to develop a systematic approach to reviewing bio-medical research conducted in their country. Much of this awareness and their concern stems from Uganda's high seroprevalence of human immunodeficiency virus and the consequent large influx of research monies and HIV researchers from developed countries, including the United States and Great Britain. We report on the proceedings of a five-day symposium on bioethical principles governing clinical trials, which convened in Jinja, (...)

This review essay considers three recent studies at the intersection of theology and intellectual disability. All three authors work out constructive proposals against a background of literature in which Nancy Eiesland and Stanley Hauerwas are central. Each explores the nature of intellectual disability through interdisciplinary study and draws this work into conversation with classical Christian theology. The essay welcomes these three books, and also suggests ways in which their constructive proposals might be strengthened. In particular, their use of resources within (...)

    Mediative Fluency and Futility Disputes.Samantha F. Knowlton & Joseph J. Fins - 2018 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 60 (3):373-382.
It is generally agreed that physicians should not provide futile interventions, for the obvious reason that an intervention without utility causes harm without benefit. However, despite efforts to standardize a definition, there is a lack of universal consensus as to what constitutes “futility.” Two recent policy statements object to the terminology of futility based on the lack of a universal definition. Schneiderman, Jecker, and Jonsen object to the proposed alternative terminology of “inappropriate.” These differing opinions about the most apt terminology (...)

In a Mediative Mood: The Semantics of the German Reportive Subjunctive. [REVIEW]Cathrine Fabricius-Hansen & Kjell Johan Sæbø - 2004 - Natural Language Semantics 12 (3):213-257.
This paper aims at an account of the German “reportive subjunctive”, where the mood signals that the proposition is the object of an utterance report. The report can be explicit in the sentence or in the context, or more or less implicit. We interpret these uses as a more or less local verification or accommodation of a presupposition introduced by the subjunctive, thus accounting for a range of facts and contributing to the theory of presuppositions.

Capitalismo digitale ed eclissi del lavoro, written by Carlo Formenti. [REVIEW]Marco Boffo - 2014 - Historical Materialism 22 (3-4):425-476.
This paper reviews the recent writing of Sergio Bologna and Carlo Formenti. These authors are proposed as post-workerist dissenters with respect to Hardt and Negri’s conceptualisation of contemporary capitalism. Therefore, while the latter has risen to prominence within Anglo-American academia astheradical account of the political economy of the knowledge economy, the work of Bologna and Formenti is here presented as providing alternative accounts of contemporary capitalism and its dynamics. In doing so, this work challenges the Anglo-American reception of post-operaismo. However, (...)
