L’article vise à mettre en évidence, dans De la recherche de la vérité, la juxtaposition d’un concept théologique et d’un concept purement anthropologique de l’inquiétude. Dans les livres III et IV de son ouvrage, Malebranche tente d’inscrire la confrontation entre l’amour des biens finis et l’amour pour le bien en général dans un cadre mécaniste d’inspiration cartésienne. Cette tentative n’aboutit pas à un modèle simple et univoque, on peut toutefois en préserver la cohérence en interprétant l’inquiétude comme la manifestation propre (...) aux mouvements infiniment petits. Par ailleurs, le livre II du même ouvrage confère à l’inquiétude une signification purement humaine, liée à l’expérience de la douleur, dont les déterminations semblent opposées à l’inquiétude d’origine théologique. C’est cette interprétation laïcisée qui prévaut dans les ouvrages ultérieurs de Malebranche ainsi que dans la fortune du concept chez les auteurs du xviiie siècle.The article aims to highlight the juxtaposition of a theological concept and a purely anthropological concept of disquietude, concern in De la recherche de la vérité. In Books III and IV of his work, Malebranche attempts to include the confrontation of love for finite goods and love for the good in general in the human soul within a mechanistic framework inspired by the Cartesians. This attempt does not result in a simple and unambiguous model, nevertheless we can preserve its consistency by interpreting disquietude, concern as a particular manifestation of infinitely small movements. Besides, the same work confers a purely human meaning on disquietude, concern, related to the experience of pain, whose determinations seem to be opposed to the disquietude, concern of theological origin. It is this secular interpretation that prevails in the late works of Malebranche and that explains the success of the concept among the authors of the eighteenth century. (shrink)

Résumé Dans le cadre de sa théorie des petites perceptions, Leibniz évoque des exemples de perceptions confuses du futur. Par ailleurs, sa théorie métaphysique de la substance individuelle incluant tous ses prédicats implique l’existence dans le sujet de « traces du futur », symétriques des traces du passé. L’objectif de l’article est d’étudier le rapport complexe entre anticipations de l’avenir et traces du futur, et, plus généralement, entre les déterminations psychologiques et métaphysiques des petites perceptions.

Ce texte vise à explorer la contribution de Paul Ric?ur à une réflexion phénoménologique sur le vivant. Il s?agit notamment, à partir du débat avec Jean-Pierre Changeux, de faire ressortir l?insistance avec laquelle il s?efforce de distinguer l?approche phénoménologique du vécu de l?ap­proche objectivante des sciences du vivant, de façon à soutenir la thèse d?un dualisme sémantique entre les deux ordres de discours. Tout le travail de Ric?ur est alors d?ouvrir le discours philosophique à l?apport des sciences de la vie, (...) sans soumettre le projet phénoménologique à une naturalisation. Con­trairement à Jean-Luc Petit, qui voit dans la phénoménologie eidétique de la volonté du jeune Ric?ur ce qu?il y a de plus prometteur pour aborder la question du vivant, nous soutenons plutôt que la position originale de Ric?ur sur le vivant se laisse comprendre à partir de sa triple allégeance à la phéno­ménologie, à l?herméneutique et à la philosophie réflexive. En 1893, « physicien-ingénieur » André Blondel invente l’oscillographe bifilaire permettant de visualiser les tensions et courants variables. À l’aide de ce puissant moyen d’investigation, il entreprend tout d’abord l’étude des phénomènes de l’arc électrique alors utilisé pour l’éclairage côtier et urbain puis de l’arc chantant employé comme émetteur d’ondes radioélectriques en T.S.F. En 1905, il met en évidence un nouveau type d’oscillations non-sinusoïdales au sein de l’arc chantant. Vingt ans plus tard, Balthasar Van der Pol reconnaitra qu’il s’agissait en (...) réalité d’oscillations de relaxation. Pour expliquer ce phénomène, il fait appel à une representation dans le plan de phase et montre que son évolution prend la forme de petits cycles. Pendant le premier conflit mondial la triode remplace peu à peu l’arc chantant dans les systèmes de transmission. Au sortir de la guerre, Blondel transpose à la triode la plupart de ses résultats par analogie avec l’arc chantant. En avril 1919, il publie un long mémoire dans lequel il introduit la terminologie « oscillations auto- entretenues » et propose d’illustrer ce concept à partir de l’exemple du vase de Tantale qui sera ensuite repris par Van der Pol et par Philippe Le Corbeiller. Il fournit alors une définition d’un système auto-entretenu assez proche de celles qui seront données par la suite par Aleksandr’ Andronov et Van der Pol. Pour étudier la stabilité des oscillations entretenues par la triode et par l’arc chantant il utilise cette fois une représentation dans le plan complexe et explicite l’amplitude en coordonnées polaires. Il justifie alors l’entretien des oscillations par l’existence de cycles qui présentent presque toutes les caractéristiques des cycles limites de Poincaré. Enfin, en novembre 1919, Blondel réalise, un an avant Van der Pol, la mise en équation des oscillations d’une triode. En mars 1926, Blondel établit l’équation différentielle caractérisant les oscillations de l’arc chantant, en tous points similaire à celle qu’obtient concomitamment Van der Pol pour la triode. Ainsi, tout au long de sa carrière, Blondel, a apporté une contribution fondamentale et relativement méconnue à l’élaboration de la théorie des oscillations non linéaires. L’objet de cet article est donc d’analyser ses principaux travaux dans ce domaine et de mesurer leur importance, voire leur influence en les replaçant dans la perspective du développement de cette théorie. L’objectif, éminemment politique, de cet ouvrage est de proposer pour 2012 une alternative aux programmes court-termistes et consensuels qui pourraient être développés par les candidats lors de la campagne officielle pour les élections présidentielles. Il vise à offrir une perspective de long terme de ce à quoi la société pourrait ressembler d’ici trente à cinquante ans si nous prenons un véritable virage écologique et humain et si nous opérons un changement concret de paradigme. Si, ces dernières années, un grand nombre (...) d’ouvrages et de films ont dénoncé les pires crises que traverse l’humanité, si d’autres se sont évertués à mettre en lumière des alternatives, force est de constater que très peu se sont attelés à la tâche d’offrir une vision articulée, écologique et positive de l’avenir. Loin des “yaka-fokon” et des déclarations d’intention pleines de bonne volonté, cet ouvrage met en lumière des solutions qui ont fait leur preuve, à petite comme à grande échelle, dans la plupart des domaines de la société. Pour chaque thématique, une personnalité “experte”, ayant développé une vision du sujet - voire souvent conduit ou observé une expérimentation -, propose en quelques pages des voies de transition concrètes, ainsi que les moyens à disposition de tous, qu’ils soient citoyens, élus ou entrepreneurs, pour les mettre en action. Chacune de ces propositions s’appuie sur un “cas pratique” : un exemple concluant mené à l’échelle d’un territoire européen (canton, département, région...). En dehors de Pascal en France, c'est surtout en Allemagne que tragique et tristesse ont été mis en rapport avant que leur distinction soit largement développée par Walter Benjamin dans son livre sur le drame baroque. L'opposition faite par Benjamin entre le Trauerspiel et la tragédie peut être interprétée comme l'aboutissement et l'achèvement d'une distinction courante dans la philosophie allemande depuis Hegel entre le " tragique " (antique) et le " triste " de la modernité (romantique). Si ces deux termes (...) ne sont pas ressentis en français comme formant un couple de concepts, il n'en va pas de même dans la philosophie et l'esthétique allemandes, où ils apparaissent régulièrement ensemble, exprimant soit une différence de degré (Hegel, Simmel), soit de nature (Nietzsche, Ziegler), soit enfin un rapport de polarité (Benjamin) et où se jouent des rapports différents avec le mythe et l'histoire. C'est un des grands mérites de Benjamin que d'avoir saisi cette polarité entre le tragique et le triste, qui n'avait jamais été formulée explicitement avant lui, et de l'avoir élevée au rang de théorie dans son opposition entre Trauerspiel et tragédie. Pour comprendre en profondeur les implications du concept de Trauerspiel introduit par Benjamin, et du concept de tristesse qui lui est lié, il est nécessaire de se replonger dans la tradition allemande, de connaître le milieu philosophique dans lequel Benjamin a fait ses études, en particulier les discussions autour de la philosophie de l'histoire et de la structure du temps au début du XXe siècle. Toute la pensée de Benjamin s'éclaire alors sous un jour nouveau qui permet de mieux saisir le lien entre ses écrits de jeunesse et sa pensée ultérieure. (shrink)

Despite the fact that there is considerable evidence against the causal efficacy of proximal (short-term) conscious intentions, many studies confirm our commonsensical belief in the efficacy of more distal (longer-term) conscious intentions. In this paper, I address two questions: (i) What, if any, is the difference between the role of consciousness in effective and in non-effective conscious intentions? (ii) How do effective conscious distal intentions interact with unconscious processes in producing actions, and how do non-effective proximal intentions fit into this (...) process? I argue that answers to these questions point to a picture of distal conscious intending as a form of self-programming. The metaphor of ?self-programming? will be elucidated by using a distinction between ?structuring? and ?triggering? causes. Though the self-programming metaphor does not amount to a full theory of conscious intending, I argue that it may be a useful heuristic in developing such a theory. I also argue that the metaphor is phenomenologically plausible. (shrink)

Conflicts of interest are rampant in the American medical community. Today it is not uncommon for doctors to refer patients to clinics or labs in which they have a financial interest (40% of physicians in Florida invest in medical centers); for hospitals to offer incentives to physicians who refer patients (a practice that can lead to unnecessary hospitalization); or for drug companies to provide lucrative give-aways to entice doctors to use their "brand name" drugs (which are much more expensive than (...) generic drugs). In Medicine, Money and Morals, Marc A. Rodwin draws on his own experience as a health lawyer--and his research in health ethics, law, and policy--to reveal how financial conflicts of interest can and do negatively affect the quality of patient care. He shows that the problem has become worse over the last century and provides many actual examples of how doctors' decisions are influenced by financial considerations. We learn how two California physicians, for example, resumed referrals to Pasadena General Hospital only after the hospital started paying $70 per patient (their referrals grew from 14 in one month to 82 in the next). As Rodwin writes, incentives such as this can inhibit a doctor from taking action when a hospital fails to provide proper service, and may also lead to the unnecessary hospitalization of patients. We also learn of a Wyeth-Ayerst Labs promotion in which physicians who started patients on INDERAL (a drug for high blood pressure, angina, and migraines) received 1000 mileage points on American Airlines for each patient (studies show that promotions such as this have a direct effect on a doctor's choice of drug). Rodwin reveals why the medical community has failed to regulate conflicts of interest: peer review has little authority, state licensing boards are usually ignorant of abuses, and the AMA code of ethics has historically been recommended rather than required. He examines what can be learned from the way society has coped with the conflicts of interest of other professionals --lawyers, government officials, and businessmen--all of which are held to higher standards of accountability than doctors. And he recommends that efforts be made to prohibit and regulate certain kinds of activity (such as kickbacks and self-referrals), to monitor and regulate conduct, and to provide penalties for improper conduct. Our failure to face physicians' conflicts of interest has distorted the way medicine is practiced, compromised the loyalty of doctors to patients, and harmed society, the integrity of the medical profession, and patients. For those concerned with the quality of health care or medical ethics, Medicine, Money and Morals is a provocative look into the current health care crisis and a powerful prescription for change. Several philosophers have argued that ‘constraints’ constrain (and thereby explain) by virtue of being modally stronger than ordinary laws of nature. In this way, a constraint applies to all possible systems, for a variety of possibility that is broader (that is, more inclusive) than the variety we employ when we say that the ordinary laws of nature apply to all physically possible systems. Explanations by constraint are thus more broadly unifying than ordinary causal explanations. Philosophical examples of good candidates for (...) constraints have heretofore been drawn almost exclusively from fundamental physics. This paper argues for the existence of such constraints (even multiple levels of them) in at least one human science (linguistics), not just in physics. (shrink)

Genocide is a matter of law. It is also a matter of history. Engaging some of the most disturbing responses to the Armenian genocide, Marc Nichanian strikingly reveals the complex role played by law and history in making this and other genocides endure as contentious events. Nichanian's book argues that both law and history fail to contend with the very nature of events for which there is no archive (no documents, no witnesses). Both history and law fail to address (...) the modern reality that events can be—and are now being—perpetrated that _depend_ upon the destruction of the archive, turning monstrous deeds into nonevents. Genocide, this book makes us see, is in one sense the _destruction_ of the archive. It relies on the historiographic perversion. (shrink)

Dès lors, comment faire l'apprentissage d'une démarche où l'on va essayer de chercher le meilleur compromis pour le plus grand nombre? Les écrits du philosophe (...) Emmanuel Mounier (1905-1950), fondateur de la revue Esprit, donnent des ressources pour une meilleure compréhension de nous-même et de la société présente. Sa pensée de la personne et de la communauté, produite dans le contexte de crise des années 1930, place l'amour au cœur du monde. Mais cette éthique cherche aussi à éviter le piège du moralisme et de la systématisation. Elle se veut avant tout " perspective, méthode, exigence ". Dans bien des secteurs comme l'éducation, la politique, l'économie où nous sommes confrontés à des choix, le personnalisme d'Emmanuel Mounier nous incite à la réflexion pour mieux agir. Cet éveil à la pensée d'Emmanuel Mounier permettra donc d'entrer dans une démarche qui nous permet de voir comment, pourquoi, vers quoi et pour qui nous pouvons faire nos choix personnels et collectifs. Alexander Pho and Benjamin A. White respond to Nicolas Dixon’s critique of mixed martial arts (MMA) through a ‘companions in innocence’ argument. Taking up a counterexample that Dixon is quick to dismiss, the authors argue that MMA techniques are on a par with the ‘pain-leveraging’ tactics used by cyclists and that pressing for a moral distinction between cycling and MMA leads to absurd conclusions about other practices. So, because cycling is morally permissible, MMA is morally permissible. This companions in innocence (...) argument fails. But cycling can be used to develop a better, though only partial, defense of MMA. (shrink)

Standardly, epistemic peers regarding a given matter are said to be people of equal competence who share all relevant evidence. Alternatively, one can define epistemic peers regarding a given matter as people who are equally likely to be right about that matter. I argue that a definition in terms of likelihood captures the essence of epistemic peerhood better than the standard definition or any variant of it. What is more, a likelihood definition implies the truth of the central thesis in (...) the debate on peer disagreement, the so-called Equal Weight View, according to which we should give the opinions of our peers the same weight we give our own. Adopting a likelihood definition, however, does not end the debate on peer disagreement, because the alleged theoretical alternatives to the Equal Weight View, reinterpreted in the light of a likelihood definition, can in fact be shown to be compatible with this view—though the reinterpreted versions may appear less plausible than the original ones. This article is an examination of killing in war in its moral and normative dimension – with attention given to how killing affects the acting agent. The author argues against the commonplace belief – often tacitly held if not consciously asserted – among academics, the general public, and even – if surprisingly – military professionals, that killing, including in a justified war, is always morally wrong – even when legally sanctioned and necessary to avert a greater moral wrong. This critique (...) of the “killing is wrong but in war it is necessary” trope is motivated in part by the large numbers of psychiatric battle casualties (specifically moral injury) suffered during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and which have attended military activity throughout history. The article approaches the issue through the field of Christian ethical reflection on just war. In building a moral framework for killing in combat, the article explores a typology of homicide, intention, double effect, love, and whether the attitudinal expectations of just warriors in the Christian tradition is realistic in combat. With this moral framework for killing in hand, this article concludes by drawing a critical distinction between moral injury and moral bruising. (shrink)

The evidence that we get from peer disagreement is especially problematic from a Bayesian point of view since the belief revision caused by a piece of such evidence cannot be modelled along the lines of Bayesian conditionalisation. This paper explains how exactly this problem arises, what features of peer disagreements are responsible for it, and what lessons should be drawn for both the analysis of peer disagreements and Bayesian conditionalisation as a model of evidence acquisition. In particular, it is pointed (...) out that the same characteristic of evidence from disagreement that explains the problems with Bayesian conditionalisation also suggests an interpretation of suspension of belief in terms of imprecise probabilities. Aujourd'hui, l'important n'est plus, semble-t-il, que la critique esthetique ait encore a dire sur Josef Beuys mais que le Centre Pompidou puisse faire croire qu'il dit tout de lui. Le culturel, dans son mecanisme institutionnel et mediatique bien huile, apparait comme l'ultime parade que l'ordre social ait su trouver pour conjurer sa peur - ou sa haine - de l'art. Cependant la critique n'a pas a se laisser abuser ni intimider par l'artifice du consensus (...) culturel qui regne actuellement. Il lui revient de continuer a evaluer les oeuvres, pour autant que le jugement sur l'art engage aussi la societe et l'epoque dans lesquelles cet art se deploie. La reflexion esthetique ne se reduit pas au jugement de gout, elle commence avec lui et se poursuit apres lui. (shrink)

Ayant constate que depuis 20 ans l'interet s'est deplace du mouvement vers l'action, des chercheurs en neurosciences, sciences cognitives et philosophie ont confronte les progres experimentaux aux analyses philosophiques. Ils ont reconnu l'originalite des nouvelles neurosciences cognitives dans le fait qu'elles ne se contentent plus de degager les correlats neuraux de la cognition, mais qu'elles reposent le probleme classique de l'union de l'esprit et du corps en apportant une masse de donnees sur le role de l'action dans la constitution de (...) l'agent lui-meme, comme dans celle - correlative - du monde environnant. Reactivant les intuitions de la phenomenologie sur l'enracinement corporel de l'intentionnalite, l'interpretation de ces donnees va obliger la philosophie analytique a briser sa cloture linguistique. A commonly neglected feature of the so-called Equal Weight View, according to which we should give our peers’ opinions the same weight we give our own, is its prima facie incompatibility with the common picture of philosophy as an armchair activity: an intellectual effort to seek a priori knowledge. This view seems to imply that our beliefs are more likely to be true if we leave our armchair in order to find out whether there actually are peers who, by disagreeing (...) with us, force us to revise our beliefs. This article argues that the Equal Weight View should be spelled out in such a way that not only actual peer disagreement requires us to revise our beliefs, but also merely possible peer disagreement. This result is not a reductio ad absurdum of the view. Quite the opposite: it shows that the view is, contrary to appearance, compatible with our common way of doing philosophy. (shrink)
