L'espace économique s'est profondément modifié au cours des vingt dernières années en raison, bien sûr, de la mondialisation, niais aussi de la déréglementation de nombreuses économies parmi les plus influentes du monde. Comment en effet pretendre offrir des reponses concretes a ceux qui s'interrogent sur la maniere de mener leur vie, d'intervenir dans l'espace public et d'organiser cet espace dans des societes traversees par un individualisme profond? Comment offrir un cadre de reflexion acceptable pour developper des applications concretes alors (...) que les cadres de reference traditionnels et usuels s'estompent? Comment repondre a des questions si singulieres alors que la philosophie se veut, par essence, universelle? Si le marché est manifestement une réalité avec laquelle tout État doit compter, il n’est pas pour autant sûr que l’on puisse en faire le seul objet de régulation sociale comme certains le souhaitent. L’auteur le démontre en utilisant la proposition mise en avant par Amartya Sen dans Standard of Living pour faire apparaître que toute tentative d’en faire un mécanisme de régulation sociale suppose l’ajout d’un concept susceptible d’assurer la coopération entre les membres d’une communauté. Si la formation est l’une des principales formes de l’intervention en éthique, sa réussite est largement tributaire des contextes institutionnels dans lesquels les formateurs sont appelés à intervenir. Et dès lors que la compétence éthique est considérée comme le concept organisateur de cette formation – ou est à tout le moins largement mise de l’avant par des organismes tels que l’OCDE – la définition de ce concept imposera un design de formation, des pratiques d’enseignement mises en œuvre par le formateur (...) et, par conséquent, le type d’activités proposées dans la formation. D’où l’importance de s’assurer que la conception de la compétence éthique permet la prise en compte d’un maximum de variables présentes en milieu de travail afin de pouvoir en assurer son déploiement de manière efficiente. Nous partirons de ces constats pour proposer une approche pragmatiste du social dans le but de mieux prendre en considération les contextes d’action et les situations auxquelles sont confrontés les travailleurs. Ces éléments, qui doivent être pris en compte pour concevoir la compétence éthique, nous inciteront alors, par un simple retour des choses, à privilégier une conception pragmatiste de l’éthique et de la compétence éthique, ce qui implique aussi de revoir la gestion sur une note plus démocratique. Pour mener notre démonstration, nous rappellerons tout d’abord les modifications opérées dans les milieux de travail et leurs caractéristiques actuelles, en insistant sur les contraintes et les exigences de ces milieux à l’égard des travailleurs. Cela nous amènera alors à défendre une conception décentrée de l’éthique et de la compétence éthique pour favoriser un outil nous aidant à corriger les pratiques dans une démarche de formation continue, in situ, plutôt qu’une compétence conçue sur le mode technique du renforcement des comportements. Une telle conception de la compétence éthique nous amènera à faire voir, de manière ancillaire, le besoin de démocratiser les milieux de travail, et le rôle qu’y tient la compétence éthique. La succession récente de crises économiques et financières constitue le symptôme le plus évident des dysfonctionnements du système économique. De nouvelles approches comme la responsabilité sociale des entreprises et la finance socialement responsable proposent d’humaniser le capitalisme et de reconfigurer l’économie de marché. Ces deux courants de pensée ont d’ailleurs contribué à opérer un important changement dans l’imaginaire social quant à la façon de concevoir la légitimité des activités économiques. Malgré leur grand inté­rêt, ces nouvelles approches comportent des limites relativement (...) à leur effica­cité et leur capacité de remédier aux dysfonctionnements reconnus. C’est pour­quoi nous souhaitons examiner ces deux approches et envisager la discussion des questions éthiques dans une perspective plus large. Nous le ferons en affirmant que le dilemme éthique de l’économie se pose assez simplement dans les termes suivants : moraliser l’économie de l’intérieur ou reformuler la question éthique à l’extérieur du discours économique, notamment par la voie politique et démocra­tique. Dans le premier cas de figure, c’est l’effectivité des approches normatives comme la RSE et la FSR qui doit être examinée. Dans le second cas de figure, c’est la place de l’éthique dans le discours social et sa relation avec l’économie qui doit être discutée. Nous discuterons donc ces deux cas de figure et proposerons de reformuler la question éthique à l’extérieur de la sphère économique en utilisant l’éthique comme cadre d’analyse transversale et matrice des choix sociopolitiques. C’est un lieu commun que de souligner l’omniprésence de l’économie dans nos discours. Non seulement la vit-on, mais on en subit également les contrecoups sur le plan de l’organisation sociale, puisque la plupart de nos décisions sont, de près ou de loin, soumises à sa logique. Current work in language models (LMs) helps us speed up or even skip thinking by accelerating and automating cognitive work. But can LMs help us with critical thinking -- thinking in deeper, more reflective ways which challenge assumptions, clarify ideas, and engineer new concepts? We treat philosophy as a case study in critical thinking, and interview 21 professional philosophers about how they engage in critical thinking and on their experiences with LMs. We find that philosophers do not find LMs to (...) be useful because they lack a sense of selfhood (memory, beliefs, consistency) and initiative (curiosity, proactivity). We propose the selfhood-initiative model for critical thinking tools to characterize this gap. Using the model, we formulate three roles LMs could play as critical thinking tools: the Interlocutor, the Monitor, and the Respondent. We hope that our work inspires LM researchers to further develop LMs as critical thinking tools and philosophers and other 'critical thinkers' to imagine intellectually substantive uses of LMs. (shrink)

This reconsideration of Hume’s classic essay “Of Miracles” via the lens of American pragmatist ways of thinking about history and power shifts our attention from Hume’s epistemic concerns about the legitimacy of witnesses and testimony to his distaste for sacred history, his critical stance regarding the social force of revelation, and his disdain for religious authority. To view Hume’s essay both as an articulation of a critical philosophy of history and as an exercise in moral dynamism (social power or, authority, (...) is a result of epistemic transactions), is to intervene in both Hume studies and Contemporary Pragmatism. The relationship between empathy, understood here as a cognitive act of imaginative transposition, and reasons, has been discussed extensively by Stueber :156–180, 2011; Emot Rev 4:55–63, 2012; in: Maibom The Routledge handbook of philosophy of empathy, Routledge, New York, pp 137–147, 2017). Stueber situates his account of empathy as the reenactment of another person’s perspective within a framework of folk psychology as guided by a principle of rational agency. We argue that this view, which we call agential empathy, is not (...) satisfying for two main reasons that we will examine consecutively. First, agential empathy cannot satisfactorily account for the case of emotional actions, which requires to take into account the phenomenal dimension of the mental states they stem from. We argue that Stueber overlooks this aspect, which is not reducible to understanding the reasons behind an agent’s behavior. We introduce the notions of experiential empathy and phenomenal insight to account for the imagined representation of the subjectively felt dimension of the target’s experience. Second, in virtue of his restrictive view of empathy, Stueber partly misconstrues this process: action explanation is not all there is to say about empathy. We argue that we have to go beyond the scope of agential empathy to do justice to the epistemic richness of empathy. Experiential empathy can in principle be available independently from reasons explanations: the main epistemic achievement of empathy can be indeed a matter of phenomenal insight only. (shrink)

Cultural code-switching concerns how we adjust our overall behaviours, manners of speaking, and appearance in response to a perceived change in our social environment. We defend the need to investigate cultural code-switching capacities in artificial intelligence systems. We explore a series of ethical and epistemic issues that arise when bringing cultural code-switching to bear on artificial intelligence. Building upon Dotson’s (2014) analysis of testimonial smothering, we discuss how emerging technologies in AI can give rise to epistemic oppression, and specifically, a (...) form of self-silencing that we call “cultural smothering.” By leaving the sociodynamic features of cultural code-switching unaddressed, AI systems risk negatively impacting already-marginalised social groups by widening opportunity gaps and further entrenching social inequalities. Cet article s’intéresse au potentiel des corpus web pour l’enseignement-apprentissage des langues étrangères. Les corpus web sont de très grands ensembles textuels provenant d’Internet. Leur constitution est largement automatisée, ce qui entraîne certaines caractéristiques qui peuvent laisser perplexes les spécialistes de l’apprentissage des langues médiées par les technologies (ALMT). Toutefois, les arguments suivants en leur faveur peuvent convaincre non seulement les linguistes, mais aussi les didacticiens : les corpus web contiennent des quantités de données très importantes permettant d’observer, à l’aide (...) d’outils de statistique textuelle, certaines caractéristiques de la langue en usage, qui sont moins visibles dans d’autres formes de représentation textuelle. Le mode de production de telles ressources est rationnel et peu coûteux. De plus, il semble légitime de les considérer comme le reflet d’une société en perpétuel changement, ayant tendance à s’organiser en réseaux. Dans cet article, je définirai les termes de « corpus pédagogique », « corpus réflexif » et « corpus web » et je comparerai les apports des deux derniers pour l’enseignement-apprentissage des langues étrangères. Je terminerai par la présentation d’éléments d’un scénario dédié à l’écriture d’une petite annonce destinée à vendre, donner ou échanger un objet. Conçu pour un public de l’enseignement secondaire en quatrième année d’apprentissage de l’allemand, ce scénario fournit le cadre pour l’évaluation du potentiel des corpus web dans un contexte pédagogique déterminé. Writers of fiction have always confronted topics of crime and punishment. This age-old fascination with crime on the part of both authors and readers is not surprising, given that criminal justice touches on so many political and psychological themes essential to literature, and comes equippedwith a trial process that contains its own dramatic structure. This volume explores this profound and enduring literary engagement with crime, investigation, and criminal justice. The collected essays explore three themes that connect the world of law (...) with that of fiction. First, defining and punishing crime is one of the fundamental purposes of government,along with the protection of victims by the prevention of crime. And yet criminal punishment remains one of the most abused and terrifying forms of political power. Second, crime is intensely psychological and therefore an important subject by which a writer can develop and explore character. Athird connection between criminal justice and fiction involves the inherently dramatic nature of the legal system itself, particularly the trial. Drawing on recent findings, this study examines whether valence concordant electromyography (EMG) responses can be explained as an unconditional effect of mere stimulus processing or as somatosensory simulation driven by task-dependent processing strategies. While facial EMG over the Corrugator supercilii and the Zygomaticus major was measured, each participant performed two tasks with pictures of album covers. One task was an affective evaluation task and the other was to attribute the album covers to one of five decades. The Embodied Emotion Account (...) predicts that valence concordant EMG is more likely to occur if the task necessitates a somatosensory simulation of the evaluative meaning of stimuli. Results support this prediction with regard to Corrugator supercilii in that valence concordant EMG activity was only present in the affective evaluation task but not in the non-evaluative task. Results for the Zygomaticus major were ambiguous. Our findings are in line with the view that EMG activity is an embodied part of the evaluation process and not a mere physical outcome. (shrink)

We are concerned here with how structural properties of language may come to reflect features of the world in which it evolves. As a concrete example, we will consider how a simple term language might evolve to support the principle of indifference over state descriptions in that language. The point is not that one is justified in applying the principle of indifference to state descriptions in natural language. Instead, it is that one should expect a language that has evolved in (...) the context of facilitating successful action to reflect probabilistic features of the world in which it evolved. (shrink)

Cet article examine la plausibilité d’un ancrage extrinsèque des normes émotionnelles. Son point de départ est la position, peu explorée dans la philosophie contemporaine, selon laquelle les émotions répondraient à des « sentiments de valeur ». L’objectif est de montrer que cette thèse s’accompagne d’une conception extrinsèque de la normativité émotionnelle. Après avoir énoncé le défi auquel cette conception doit répondre, l’article présente les principaux modèles possibles pour rendre compte du sentiment de valeur – un modèle perceptuel, un modèle quasi (...) perceptuel et un modèle intuitionniste – afin d’évaluer leur pertinence. Scientific realists have argued that the truth(likeness) of our theories provides the only explanation for the success of science. I consider alternative explanations proposed by antirealists. I endorse Leplin's contention that neither van Fraassen's Darwinist explanation nor Laudan's methodological explanation provides the sort of explanatory alternative which is called for in this debate. Fine's suggestion--that the empirical adequacy of our theories already explains their success--is more promising for antirealists. Leplin claims that this putative explanation collapses into realism on one reading (...) and into vacuity on another reading. But his analysis conflates three doctrines into two, and one of the three avoids both realism and vacuity. (shrink)

Over the past fifteen years there has been a considerable amount of debate concerning what theoretical population dynamic models tell us about the nature of natural selection and drift. On the causal interpretation, these models describe the causes of population change. On the statistical interpretation, the models of population dynamics models specify statistical parameters that explain, predict, and quantify changes in population structure, without identifying the causes of those changes. Selection and drift are part of a statistical description of population (...) change; they are not discrete, apportionable causes. Our objective here is to provide a definitive statement of the statistical position, so as to allay some confusions in the current literature. We outline four commitments that are central to statisticalism. They are: 1. Natural Selection is a higher order effect; 2. Trait fitness is primitive; 3. Modern Synthesis (MS)-models are substrate neutral; 4. MS-selection and drift are model-relative. (shrink)

I introduce an extension of the Lewis-Skyrms signaling game, analysed from a dynamical perspective via simple reinforcement learning. In Lewis’ (Convention, Blackwell, Oxford, 1969) conception of a signaling game, salience is offered as an explanation for how individuals may come to agree upon a linguistic convention. Skyrms (Signals: evolution, learning & information, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2010a) offers a dynamic explanation of how signaling conventions might arise presupposing no salience whatsoever. The extension of the atomic signaling game examined here—which I (...) will refer to as a salience game—introduces a variable parameter into the atomic signaling game which allows for degrees of salience, thus filling in the continuum between Skyrms’ and Lewis’ models. The model does not presuppose any salience at the outset, but illustrates a process by which accidentally evolved salience is amplified, to the benefit of the players. It is shown that increasing degrees of salience allow populations to avoid sub-optimal pooling equilibria and to coordinate upon conventions more quickly. (shrink)

According to an externalist theory of content the content of an individual’s thoughts and the meaning of her words need not supervene on her intrinsic history. Two individuals may be intrinsically exactly alike yet entertain different thoughts, and attach different meanings to the words they use. ETC, which has been most notably defended by Saul Kripke, Hilary Putnam and Tyler Burge, has attained the status of current orthodoxy. Nevertheless, some maintain that combining ETC with the premisses that we have privileged (...) access to our intentional states yields a surprising conclusion. It yields the conclusion that we can have a priori knowledge of features of the external world that seem only accessible to empirical investigation. Call the argument from ETC and privileged access to this conclusion the main argument. Some take the main argument to be a reductio of ETC. Since we have privileged access to our intentional states, and lack the a priori knowledge attributed by the main argument, ETC is false. Some take the main argument to refute the premisses that we have privileged access to those intentional states falling within the scope of ETC. Others see the main argument as a refutation of external world scepticism. We will show that the main argument does not support any of these interesting conclusions. We will show that the main argument does not threaten to restrict privileged access, refute external world scepticism, or constitute a reductio of ETC. More exactly, we will show that the most defensible version of ETC, even when combined with the premiss that we have unrestricted privileged access to our intentional states, yields no a priori knowledge of the external world.
