Negative attitudes toward invertebrates are a deep-seated, visceral response among Western peoples. These internalized aversions toward insects and other terrestrial arthropods, both in general and specifically as a food source, subtly and systemically contribute to unsustainable global foodways. Insect cuisine is, for Westerners, emblematic of the alien, a threat to our psychological and cultural identity. Yet failure to embrace entomophagy prevents us from seeing the full humanity of those of other classes, races, and cultures, and leads to agricultural and food (...) policy decisions that fail in their objectives to improve nourishment for all people. Key to enabling the world’s peoples to live sustainably with the land are: awareness of the psychological and cultural barriers to a more insect-positive perspective embracing insects as a desirable food resource, understanding the processes by which those barriers are constructed, their negative consequences, and identifying strategies for transforming our attitudes. A questionnaire on business ethics was administered to business professionals and to upper-class business ethics students. On eight of the seventeen situations involving ethical dilemmas in business, students were significantly more willing to engage in questionable behavior than were their professional counterparts. Apparently, many students were willing to do whatever was necessary to further their own interests, with little or no regard for fundamental moral principles. Many students and professionals functioned within Lawrence Kohlberg's stage four of moral reasoning, the law (...) and order stage. Individualism and egoism remain strong patterns in the moral reasoning of many professionals, but they influence moral reasoning patterns among students to a much greater degree. (shrink)

This article describes methods and ideas that emerged from a continuing enquiry into ‘metadesign’ that led us to think about the role of ‘consciousness’ in teams, communities and the biosphere. In the West the notion of ‘consciousness’ has been shaped by humanism, industrialization and some strident forms of individualism. These have encouraged us to see it in strongly anthropocentric and solipsistic terms. The global economic system also reflects this individualistic ideology, given that ‘growth’, is driven by personal avarice on a (...) collective scale. On the other hand, capitalism encourages enterprises to scale-up when they become successful. Both tendencies reduce the consciousness of organizations and communities. The article illustrates this idea by describing a ‘quadratic’ model of team consciousness that was developed to enhance practical developments that support personal, interpersonal, transpersonal and environmentally situated modes of awareness. Und mit Sicherheit konnte man diesen Einfluß kaum irgendwo eher mit Händen greifen als am Old-Princeton-Seminary: Kontinentale Theologie und Bibelkritik geriet mit Princetons realistischem Ansatz und einer der Tradition verhafteten calvinistischen Theologie in Konflikt. Das trat insbesondere 1893 im Zuge des kirchlichen Untersuchungsverfahrens gegen Charles August Briggs zu Tage: Die Ereignisse und Diskussionen regten in Princeton dazu an, noch hinter die iro-schottischen Wurzeln zurückzugreifen und sich um (...) eine Fundierung einer von konfessionellem Bewußtsein geprägten calvinistischen Theologie zu bemühen. Ein Ergebnis war, daß Geerhardus Vos erster professor biblicus der Fakultät wurde. Vos war von der Neo-Calvinistischen Bewegung Abraham Kuypers in den Niederlanden geprägt, die wiederum selbst wesentliche Elemente dem Romantizismus verdankte. Der vorliegende Beitrag berücksichtigt gerade diese besonderen, auf der niederländischen Prägung beruhenden Charakteristika der Vosschen Methode, insbesondere bezogen auf seine Epistemologie, sein Wissenschaftsverständnis, das Geschichtsbild und seinen Organizismus; sie lassen manche Anfrage an seine Föderaltheologie zu. Freilich kopierte Vos Kuyper nicht einfach, sondern erkannte die besonderen Anforderungen, die die Situation in Amerika an ihn stellte. Darum berücksichtigt der vorliegende Beitrag auch, in welcher Weise Vos die in den Niederlanden gewonnenen Erkenntnisse in seine Lehre in Princeton integrierte. Während Kuyper die Biblische Theologie etwa gleichgültig blieb, eröffnete der Lehrstuhl in Princeton Vos die Möglichkeit, diese sich zunehmend etablierende Disziplin weiterzuentwickeln. So wurde Vos' Position zu einem tertium zwischen den Calvinisten in Princeton einerseits und denen in Amsterdam auf der anderen Seite. (shrink)

F.A. Hayek studied at the University of Vienna, where he became both a Doctor of Law and a Doctor of Political Science. After several years in the Austrian civil service, he was made the first diector of the Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research. In 1931 he was appointed Tooke Professor of Economics and Statistics at the London School of Economics, and in 1950 he went to the University of Chicago as Professor of Social and Moral Sciences. He returned to (...) Europe in 1962, to the chair of Economics at the University of Freiburg, where he became Professor Emeritus in 1967. The holder of numerous honorary doctorates, and a member of the British Academy, Hayek was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1974. He was created Companion of Honour in 1984. He is the author of some fifteen books, including _Prices and Production, The Pure Theory of Capital, The Road to Serfdom, The Counter-Revolution of Science, The Sensory Order, The Constitution of Liberty, _ _Law, Legislation and Liberty_, and _The Fatal Conceit_. Hayek's reputation has gone through a remarkable cycle. An eminent exponent of the Austrian theory of business cycles in the 1930s, he was worsted in the controversy over Keynes' _Treatise on Money_. Following this defeat, Hayek retreated into capital theory, an esoteric branch of economics in which few economists then took an active interest. He gave up economics altogether after the war and turned to psychology, political philosophy, philosophy of law and the history of ideas. However, in 1974 he won (...) the Nobel Prize and returned to mainstream economics as a leading critic of Keynesianism and an advocate of free banking as the answer to inflation. Nature's Teachings, first published in 1877, was one of many books on natural history by J. G. Wood, a Victorian clergyman who was hugely influential in popularising the subject, as well as being the editor of The Boy's Own Magazine. Here he examines the close parallels between nature and human inventions in areas including seafaring, war and hunting, architecture, tools, optics and acoustics, as well as 'useful arts' including sewage disposal. His text contains over 750 figures and illustrations, and he (...) argues that future great discoveries could be made as a result of careful observations of nature. Although a contemporary of Darwin, Wood largely ignored the evolution debates and focused on communicating his enthusiasm for the natural world to a non-scientific audience. His successful publications still make fascinating reading for those interested in Victorian culture and the history of education. (shrink)

Sir John Hicks is one of the most important and influential economists of the twentieth century. Awarded the Nobel Prize for economics in 1972, he has made contributions across a wide range of economic theory, writing some twenty books. It juxtaposes cutting-edge theories, polemics, and creative practices to uncover ethical, aesthetic and ecological implications of why, how and in particular where, human actions, observations and insights take place.
