Zusammenfassung An keiner Stelle in seinen Schriften diskutiert Aristoteles das athenische Liturgiesystem, sondern setzt bei seinen wenigen Informationen dazu dessen Kenntnis voraus. An seiner Kritik der athenischen Liturgien im 4. Jahrhundert als ungerechter Belastung der Reichen läßt er allerdings keinen Zweifel. Welches sind die Gründe für seine Ablehnung, und wie sollten die Liturgien Aristoteles zufolge besser organisiert sein? Wir vergleichen Aristoteles’ Aussagen und Bewertung des Liturgiesystems mit Informationen aus externen Quellen und kommen zu dem Schluß, daß viele seiner Vorstellungen in (...) der Verfassung des Demetrios von Phaleron verwirklicht worden sind. Unsere Diskussion beleuchtet die Entwicklung von der privat finanzierten Liturgie zum öffentlichen Amt sowie die problematische Frage, wie in einer Demokratie die nötigen Eigenmittel zur Erledigung der Aufgaben generiert werden konnten, die zuvor von Liturgen ausgeführt wurden, eine Entwicklung, die zu den von Euergeten finanzierten Amtsliturgien in der hellenistischen Zeit führte. In the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant criticizes his predecessors, specifically Locke and Leibniz, in their one-sided reductions of representation to a single faculty. In his 1802 dialogue Bruno, Schelling develops this discussion into a criticism of Kant’s own one-sided idealism. Focusing on these developments makes clear the manner in which Schelling sees himself as advancing beyond both pre-Critical realisms and Kant’s transcendental idealism. He subsumes realism and Kantian idealism within his own absolute standpoint, providing a ground and rationale for (...) both types of philosophical system as independent approaches, and he asserts that the ultimate foundation and unity of these systems of philosophy is in the absolute which is beyond conceptual thought. In contemporary philosophy of science many theories of explanation are rooted in positivist or post-positivists accounts of explanation. This paper attempts to ground a phenomenological account of scientific explanation by using the works of Werner Heisenberg and Patrick Heelan. To explain something for Heisenberg is to describe what can be intersubjectively observed and conceptualized in an adequate language. However, this needs to be qualified, as not any adequate account will do. While Heisenberg thinks that Kant is right to think that (...) a priori concepts are the conditions which make science, and thus explanation, possible, he also believes pure a priori concepts have a limited range of applicability. Neils Bohr shared this belief with Heisenberg, but thinks human thought can go no further. However, Heisenberg never gave up on the idea that we could create new concepts that act as a priori grounds for quantum entities. To go beyond Heisenberg, I believe that we should look to Husserl’s account of Evidenz and the material a priori to help us think about a phenomenological account of explanation. (shrink)

The purpose of this research was to determine if there is a significant difference in the attitudes of students toward situations involving ethical decisions before and after taking a course in Business and Society. A simulated before and after design was used with Clark's personal business ethics and social responsibility scale serving as the measurement instrument. The result of the study indicated that the Business and society class had no statistically significant impact on student attitudes.

In the mathematics education research literature, there is a growing body of scholarship on how mathematicians practice their craft. The purpose of this chapter is to survey some of this literature and explain how it can contribute to the philosophy of mathematical practice. We first describe how mathematics educators use empirical methodologies to investigate the behaviors of mathematicians and argue that findings from these studies can inform the philosophy of mathematical practice. The distinction between rules and principles is highly controversial. This is due to its significant impact on almost every fundamental philosophy of law and legal theory issue, for instance, the application of legal norms, the concept of the legal system, the relation between law and morality, or the structure of basic rights. The actual debate is based on three main theses: the “strong separation” thesis, the “weak separation” thesis and the “conformity” thesis. The author concentrates on the development of the (...) “strong separation” thesis, first elaborated by Josef Esser, then developed by Ronald Dworkin and lately worked out by Robert Alexy. The several objections raised to Alexy´s thesis on principles as optimization commands will be discussed in detail. The author comes finally to his own formal description of principles as norms, with both an abstract and a concrete validity. (shrink)

On several levels, there is now a debate whether the concept of God can be made compatible with modern science. In an attempt to elucidate this debate, I give an account of my own experiences from writing a book on the foundation of quantum mechanics. In my opinion, one can give two independent arguments for the existence of God by taking as departure an epistemic (knowledge-based) interpretation of quantum theory. However, I also argue that any religious belief should be the (...) result of an existential choice governed by each person’s own context (history and culture). In particular, I give my account of Christianity as a religion connected to our western culture, how one as a scientist can relate to the relevant dogmas. (shrink)

The well known Bell experiment with two actors Alice and Bob is considered. First the simple deduction leading to the CHSH inequality under local realism is reviewed, and some arguments from the literature are recapitulated. Then I take up certain background themes before I enter a discussion of Alice’s analysis of the situation. An important point is that her mind is limited by the fact that her Hilbert space in this context is two-dimensional. General statements about a mind’s limitation during (...) a decision process are derived from recent results on the reconstruction of quantum theory from conceptual variables. These results apply to any decision situation. Let all the data from the Bell experiment be handed over to a new actor Charlie, who performs a data analysis. But his mind is also limited: He has a four-dimensional Hilbert space in the context determined by the experiment. I show that this implies that neither Alice nor Charlie can have the argument leading to the CHSH inequality as a background for making decisions related to the experiment. Charlie may be any data analyst, and he may communicate with any person. It is argued that no rational person can be convinced by the CHSH argument when making empirical decisions on the Bell situation. (shrink)

ABSTRACTDaoist ethics are difficult to pinpoint in a Western ethical framework. At times classic Daoist texts advocate for certain ways of life over others, yet at other times they rebel against the notions of right and wrong. This attitude about right and wrong, leads some to believe that Daoists are moral relativists who believe that right and wrong are merely an arbitrary valuing within the mind and that there is no justification for external moral critique. Others believe that there is (...) a Daoist ethic, but it advocates only not acting, in the literal sense, when we are faced with ethical choices. This paper attempts to show a coherent, universal ethic that can be inferred from a close reading of these texts. (shrink)

This article may be seen as a summary and a final discussion of the work that the author has done in recent years on the foundation of quantum theory. It is shown that quantum mechanics as a model follows under certain specific conditions from a quite different, much simpler model. This model is connected to the mind of an observer, or to the joint minds of a group of communicating observers. The model is based upon conceptual variables, and an important (...) aspect is that an observer (a group of observers) must decide on which variable to measure. The model is then linked more generally to a theory of decisions. The results are discussed from several angles. (shrink)

The objective was to test the Theory of Planned Behavior and the proposition that relative measures should be used in travel mode choice situations. Data from a survey in Norway was analyzed using regression analysis. The results indicated that factors of the Theory of Planned Behavior and past behavior predicted intentions to travel by car, public, transport, bicycle, and on foot. The results supported the idea that there is a split in perceived behavioral control in controllability and self-efficacy, as controllability (...) was a significant predictor only for intention to travel by car. The use of relative measures added to the predictive strength of all predictors and increased prediction of behavioral intention for all travel modes. The results supported the Theory of Planned Behavior and the proposition regarding choice situations. Previous tests of the theory may have underestimated its predictive power. Attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control predict travel intentions and may be targeted in interventions aimed at promoting travel mode choice. (shrink)

Im Ausgang von Ernst Cassirers methodischen Überlegungen zur Geschichtsschreibung werden dichterische, ästhetische und künstlerische Intentionen der geschichtlichen Darstellung bei David Hume, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Heinrich von Treitschke, Benedetto Croce und Hayden White hinsichtlich ihrer Möglichkeiten und Gefahren nachgezeichnet. Die Abhandlung schließt mit kritischen Stellungnahmen von Thomas Nipperdey und Joachim Fest zur gegenwärtigen Geschichtsschreibung. Zur Diskussion steht, ob die Aufnahme ästhetischer Kriterien in die Geschichtsschreibung den Anspruch einlösen kann, Wahrheit in der Geschichte darzustellen, ob diese Kriterien nicht eher zu einer Abschwächung (...) und Verdunkelung dieses Anspruchs beitragen, und ob nicht vielmehr davon auszugehen ist, daß sich ästhetische und wissenschaftliche Kategorien geschichtlicher Darstellung gegenseitig ausschließen. Am Beispiel der Uhrenmetapher, deren Entstehung und Gestaltwandel ein bestimmtes Welt- und Staatsverständnis widerspiegelt, soll das Verhältnis von Metapher und Wirklichkeit deutlich werden. Die Geschichte der Uhrenmetapher, die u. a. über Cusanus, Kepler, Kopernikus, Leibniz, Hobbes, Descartes, Diderot, Voltaire, Wolff verfolgt wird, zeigt, dass sie schon im Mittelalter als Träger des Maschinenbegriffs verstanden wird und mit der Erfindung des Computers ihr Endstadium erreicht. Im Zeichen der Uhr als Symbol der Mechanik entfaltet sich im 17. Jahrhundert die Kontroverse zwischen Determinismus und (...) Willensfreiheit. Mit der Erfindung der mechanischen Uhr bildet sich ein abstrakter Begriff von Zeit heraus. Das mechanische Denken prägt bis in die Gegenwart hinein unser Wissenschaftsverständnis. (shrink)

In der philosophischen Tradition nehmen geschichtsphilosophische Gesichtspunkte wie die Wahrnehmung von Geschichte, der Begriff von Wissen und Vernunft, das sich daraus ergebende Folgeproblem von Einheit und Vielheit und die Rolle und Funktion des Subjektes eine grundlegende Bedeutung ein. In der Postmoderne erfahren diese Aspekte in ihrem philosophischen Stellenwert eine deutliche Profilveränderung. Diese Veränderung, die auf ein ,,entdifferenzierendes Denken" innerhalb der Postmoderne zurückzuführen ist, wird kritisch überprüft.

Arthur Schopenhauer hat Theodor Lessings Denken nachhaltig beeinflußt. Dies gilt auch für das Konzept der Struktur eines Subjekts. Schopenhauer spaltet die Leistungskraft des Subjektes auf in ein empirisch-wollendes und ein ,,reines Bewußtsein", Lessing unterscheidet das empirisch-psychologisch wollende Vermögen des Subjektes von dem der intuitiven Vernunft. Dem Subjekt wird bei Schopenhauer und Lessing zugunsten des irrationalen Willens die Autonomie abgesprochen. Das denkende Bewußtsein, ein prinzipienmächtiges freies Subjekt kann hier gegenüber dem Willen keine Priorität mehr beanspruchen. Der Bedeutung und Funktion dieses nur (...) als Faktum begriffenen Subjektes wird in der Geschichtsauffassung von Schopenhauer und Lessing nachgegangen. Dieses Subjekt vermag eine Authentizität und Objektivität von Geschichte und damit auch von sich selbst nicht mehr zu vermitteln. (shrink)

In der Gegenwart hat die Existenzphilosophie wie auch das Denken Karl Jaspers' an Ausstrahlung und prägender Kraft verloren. Bedenkt man jedoch die etwa vor zwei Jahrzehnten angestoßene philosophische Diskussion um das Subjekt, so bedeuten die für Jaspers grundlegenden Gesichtspunkte von Subjekt und Existenz auch heute noch eine Herausforderung für jedes Nachdenken über den Begriff der Subjektivität. Im Hinblick auf die durch Freiheit und Transzendenz bestimmte Existenz wird der Jaspers'sche Begriff des Subjektes kritisch untersucht.

Inside a combinatory algebra, there are ‘internal’ versions of the finite type structure over ω, which form models of various systems of finite type arithmetic. This paper compares internal representations of the intensional and extensional functionals. If these classes coincide, the algebra is called ft-extensional. Some criteria for ft-extensionality are given and a number of well-known ca's are shown to be ft-extensional, regardless of the particular choice of representation for ω. In particular, DA, Pω, Tω, Hω and certain D∞-models all (...) share the property of ft-extensionality. It is also shown that ft-extensionality is by no means an intrinsic property of ca's i.e., that there exists a very concrete class of ca's—the class of reflexive coherence spaces—no member of which has this property. This leads to a comparison of ft-extensionality with the well-studied notions of extensionality and weak extensionality. Ft-extensionality turns out to be completely independent. (shrink)

Egner, “The role of topos in the use of a Wobe particle”.In the paper I am trying to show how a speaker using the particle {ie271-1} in his utterance calls upon a contextual assumption that can be formulated as a topos.After formulating a working hypothesis according to which the particle {ie271-2} signals to the hearer that the speaker's utterance is justified, I use English and Wobe paraphrases of the examples quoted in order to make explicit that justification.Wobe paraphrases given (...) by the informant suggest that in using {ie271-3} the speaker calls upon t contextual assumption that he feels is relevant in the speech situation. To the extent that this assumption is based on common sense knowledge, it seemed appropriate to use Ducrot's notion of topos to formulate it, e.g. (T) [The deeper one gets into the bush, the fewer white people he meets].One of the examples quoted calls attention to the fact that the topos called upon by way of {ie271-4} may or may not be validated, i.e. confirmed in the speech situation.Finally, the validation or non-validation of a topos seems to determine the illocutionary value of a wh-question containing {ie271-5} as request for information or request for explanation respectively.
