    My favourite molecule: Polyamines, chromatin structure and transcription.Harry R. Matthews - 1993 - Bioessays 15 (8):561-566.
Nucleosomes are the basic elements of chromatin structure. Polyamines, such as spermine and spermidine, are small ubiquitous molecules absolutely required for cell growth. Photoaffinity polyamines bind to specific locations in nucleosomes and can change the helical twist of DNA in nucleosomes. Acetylation of polyamines reduces their affinity for DNA and nucleosomes, thus the helical twist of DNA in nucleosomes could be regulated by cells through acetylation. I suggest that histone and polyamine acetylation act synergistically to modulate chromatin structure. On naked (...)

Participatory structures and the youth of today: Engaging those who are hardest to reach.Hugh Matthews - 2001 - Ethics, Place and Environment 4 (2):153 – 159.
Youth forums are a favoured means for encouraging youth participation. Taking many forms, they usually describe groups of young people who come together in committees to discuss issues relating to their communities. Adults establish many youth forums largely because they are perceived to provide tangible opportunities deemed to enable ongoing participation rather than because of demand from young people themselves. Recent evidence suggests, however, that youth forums are often an inappropriate way of engaging many young people, especially those who are (...)

Reduced cytoplasmic calcium concentration may be both necessary and sufficient for photoreceptor light adaptation.H. R. Matthews & G. L. Fain - 1995 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 18 (3):481-481.
Light adaptation is modulated almost exclusively by changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration, and other Ca2+-independent mechanisms are likely to play only a minor role. Changes in Ca2+i may be not only necessary for light adaptation to take place but sufficient to cause it.

The metastatic cancer cell cortex: An adaptation to enhance robust cell division in novel environments?Helen K. Matthews & Buzz Baum - 2012 - Bioessays 34 (12):1017-1020.
Graphical AbstractTo metastasize, cancer cells must be able to complete cell division in environments very different from their tissue of origin. We suggest that mitotic cell rounding, aided by several actin-regulatory oncogenes, may facilitate this process in a robust, context-independent manner.
