In this paper, we propose an analysis of metalinguistic comparatives (MCs) in Greek and Korean which combines an attitudinal semantics (Giannakidou and Stavrou 2008) with an expressive component. The comparative morpheme supplies the former, and the than-particle supplies the latter. Following Giannakidou and Stavrou, we assume that the MC involves the speaker’s attitude towards the than-proposition— which is deemed less appropriate or preferable— and we discuss novel data from Korean showing a two way distinction between “regular” MCs (...) (signaled by the particle kipota), and negative MCs (signaled by charari “rather” and the particle nuni). We argue that the use of MC than particles, in all variants, brings about an individual’s emotive state, and propose that the morphemes contain expressive indices in the sense of Potts 2007. Indices allow a range from mildly negative to very negative stance, so we capture the fact that expressive particles convey negativity, without positing negation in syntax— a result consistent with the fact that MC-than itself does not license strong NPIs that need negation. We further show that NPI sanctioning in comparatives is very limited, contrary to what is generally thought. Besides NPI-sanctioning, this analysis has two, we believe, important implications. First, it allows the generalization that metalinguistic functions in language are indeed part of the grammar as a combination of attitude semantics and expressivity. Additionally, our use of expressive indices supports Potts’s view of the expressive component as separate, but interacting, with the descriptive content. Finally, we show that the than particle is not vacuous (as is generally believed) but contentful: it is the locus of the interaction between descriptive and expressive meaning in the comparative. In this paper, we present a striking parallel between Greek and Korean in the formation and interpretation of metalinguistic comparatives. The initial observation is that both languages show an empirical contrast between “regular” comparative and metalinguistic comparative realized in (a) the form of a designated metalinguistic comparative MORE; and (b) in the form of THAN employed. We propose (building on our earlier analyses in Giannakidou and Stavrou 2009, Giannakidou and Yoon 2009) that the metalinguistic comparative is perspectival, i.e. (...) it introduces the point of view of an individual towards a sentence, and argue that the individual expresses invariably an attitude of preference: she prefers one sentence (the sentence itself, or the proposition it expresses) in a given context over another. The preference may come out as completely negative in certain cases, and this is manifested as yet another lexicalization in Korean (charari), which selects nuni-THAN, which itself carries a negative expressive index (in the sense of Potts 2007), we will claim. Expressive negativity is not equivalent to negation in syntax, as nuni alone cannot license NPIs that need negation. If our analysis is correct, it has one important implication that goes beyond just the metalinguistic comparatives in the individual languages we are considering. It allows the generalization that metalinguistic functions in language are indeed part of the grammar. In particular, they are reflexes of grammaticalization of perspective and subjective mode, on a par with predicates of personal taste discussed by Lasersohn 2005, 2008, 2009, mood choice, and similar phenomena. 에른스트 블로흐가 제시한 희망철학의 기본정신은 그의 프로메테우스 해석으로부터 나온 것이다. 희망의 가능 근거는 미래 시간의 지평이며, 그로부터 우리는 ‘아직-아님’이라는 시간성의 계기를 발견할 수 있다. 블로흐는 역사의 참된 창조는 세계의 시초에 있는 것이 아니라 그 마지막에 있다고 보았다. 세계 종말에서의 참된 창조는 기존의 것에 대한 부정에 그치지 않고 새롭게 하는 혁명적 사건에 의해서 실현된다. 블로흐는 이를 수행할 수 있는 인간상을 프로메테우스 신화에서 찾았다. 다른 그리스의 신들과는 달리 프로메테우스는 인간에게 불과 기술을 전수하려고 했음에도 불구하고 종교적 신앙의 대상이 되지 못했다.BR 프로메테우스는 운명과 죽음 (...) 앞에서 무력해지는 올림포스의 신들과는 달리 앞에서만 본 예술종교의 한계를 넘어서서 현실적 고통과 폭압적 질서에 굴복하지 않고 해방과 자유를 성취하고자 노력했다. 프로메테우스는 아이스퀼로스의 비극 속에서 종교적 의미를 얻게 되었고, 괴테와 블로흐 등을 거쳐서 희망철학적 인간상으로 정립될 수 있었다. 블로흐가 희망철학에서 구축한 인간상에 가장 근접한 자가 바로 프로메테우스인 것이다.BR 희망은 학문의 역사에 한 번도 등장한 적이 없는, 이른바 ‘아직 이루어지지 않은 것’, ‘아직 완성되지 않은 것’에서 ‘아직-아님’의 성격을 가지고 있다. 블로흐는 자신의 희망 사유에서 미래, 전초, 새것의 범주를 새롭게 도입한다. 이전 철학자들이 말하는 ‘본질’은 ‘과거적 본성의 총체’이다. 그러나 블로흐는 단호하게 본질은 결코 과거 속에 있지 않으며, 세계의 전초에 있다고 말한다. 그것은 우리에게 아직 이루어지지 않은, 아직 달성되지 않은 ‘고향’의 문제이기도 하다. 이러한 블로흐의 희망사유는 카드모스, 아이스클레피오스, 오르페우스, 디오니소스, 예수 그리스도로 이어지는 ‘프로메테우스 영향사’를 통해 확립되었다. Animals can be used in many ways in science and scientific research. Given that society values sentient animals and that basic research is not goal oriented, the question is raised.

The current use of animals to test for potential teratogenic effects of drugs and other chemicals dates back to the thalidomide disaster of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Controversy surrounds the following questions: 1. What was known about placental transfer of drugs when thalidomide was developed? 2. Was thalidomide tested on animals for teratogenicity prior to its release? 3. Would more animal testing have prevented the thalidomide disaster? 4. What lessons should be learned from the thalidomide disaster regarding animal (...) testing for teratogenicity? We review the literature in order to address these questions. (shrink)

호메로스가 살던 사회는 끊임없는 전쟁이 벌어지는 사회였고 그 사회에서 요구되는 아레테는 전투 능력이 출중한 전쟁영웅들이 갖던 전투 기술이었다. 따라서 그 사회에서 아레테를 강조하면 강조할수록 전쟁을 수행해야할 명분들이 축척되는 결과들을 초래하게 된다. 왜냐하면 한 사람이 아레테를 획득하여 전쟁 영웅이 되기 위해서는 반드시 전쟁이 일어나야만 하기 때문이다. 이 때문에 아킬레우스나 헥토르도 자신의 죽음을 미리 예견하고 있었지만 기꺼이 전투에 참여하게 된다. 이처럼 호메로스 시대에 아레테는 전투 기계들을 생산해내는 이데올로기로 작용했다. 그리고 이 아레테 개념을 뒷받침해주는 것이 임전무퇴를 죄악시하는 aidōs 개념이다. 그렇다면 오직 이런 전투기술의 (...) 숭상을 도모하기 위해서 호메로스의 작품들이 기획되었을까? 연구자는 호메로스의 의도는 그것이 아니라고 생각한다. 그는 전쟁옹호자도 아니고 전쟁 아레테의 찬미론자도 아니다.BR 연구자는 일반적인 aidōs 개념과 상충하고 있는 3가지 사례들을 살펴본다. 첫 번째는 네스토르가 이야기한 ‘다른 사람들’과 관련해서 그것은 전쟁 영웅이 돌볼 의무가 있는 가족이다. 안드로마케나 헤카베의 요청처럼 헥토르는 전투에 참여해서 자신의 명예나 가족 외의 사람들로부터 비난을 듣지 않는 것도 중요하지만 자신이 죽고 난 후 험한 일을 당할 자신의 처자식에 대한 돌봄을 소홀히 해서는 안 된다. 두 번째 사례는 전쟁은 신들의 기획이라는 점이다. 신들이 짜놓은 체스판에 인간은 꼭두각시 역할을 할 수도 있다. 그래서 아가멤논이나 이도메네우스 또는 메넬라오스는 제우스의 도움을 받고 있는 헥토르와의 전투를 피하려고 노력한다. 마지막 사례는 파리스의 태만이다. 그는 한 사람의 명성은 현재 벌어지고 있는 전투에 의해서 평가되는 것이 아니라 그가 살아온 삶의 이력에 의해서 평가되어져야 함을 보여준다. 그는 자발적 태만을 통해서 다른 사람들이 던지는 aidōs에 전혀 흔들리는 모습을 보여주지 않는다. 이런 3가지 사례들에 비추어 볼 때, 전쟁 수행을 통한 명예나 수치심에 중심을 두는 아레테 사회에 호메로스는 다른 견해를 제시해주고 있다. The requirement that animals be used in research and testing in order to protect humans was formalized in the Nuremberg Code and subsequent national and international laws, codes, and declarations. We review the history of these requirements and contrast what was known via science about animal models then with what is known now. We further analyze the predictive value of animal models when used as test subjects for human response to drugs and disease. We explore the use of animals for (...) models in toxicity testing as an example of the problem with using animal models. We conclude that the requirements for animal testing found in the Nuremberg Code were based on scientifically outdated principles, compromised by people with a vested interest in animal experimentation, serve no useful function, increase the cost of drug development, and prevent otherwise safe and efficacious drugs and therapies from being implemented. It is one of the central aims of the philosophy of science to elucidate the meanings of scientific terms and also to think critically about their application. The focus of this essay is the scientific term predict and whether there is credible evidence that animal models, especially in toxicology and pathophysiology, can be used to predict human outcomes. Whether animals can be used to predict human response to drugs and other chemicals is apparently a contentious issue. However, when one empirically (...) analyzes animal models using scientific tools they fall far short of being able to predict human responses. This is not surprising considering what we have learned from fields such evolutionary and developmental biology, gene regulation and expression, epigenetics, complexity theory, and comparative genomics. 본 논문은 사랑을 성애로 환원하는 최근의 성적 환원주의와 사랑이 가능한 한 사적으로 유지돼야 한다는 자유주의적 이상에 맞서 고대 그리스의 정치-사랑 개념 쌍을 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 통해 현대 학문 영역에서 상대적으로 간과되고 있는 고대 그리스의 정치 이론에 나타난 공적 에로스론인‘폴리스-에로스론’을 고찰하려는 데에 그 목적이 있다.BR 성적 욕망은 에로스의 제한된 유형일 뿐이라는 논점을 위해, 2절에서는 헤시오도스의 『신통기』에 나타난 에로스 신의 기원에 관한 두 가지 설명이 차례로 분석될 것이다. 헤시오도스의 신화적이고 시적인 설명에 따르면, 고전기의 정치적 에로스에 대한 최초의 기원이 아프로디테 이전의 최초의 오래된 (...) 에로스라는 것이 드러날 것이다. 이 원초적인 에로스가 비성적이거나 성적인 것 외부에 있는 비육체적인 대상들에 적용됐던 정치적 에로스의 모태임이 밝혀질 것이다. 다음으로 3절은 시칠리아 원정, 페리클레스의 장례식 연설 그리고 뮈틸레네 논쟁을 통해 투퀴디데스의 정치적 에로스 담론의 지형도가 그려진다. 투퀴디데스의 정치적 에로스 담론은 더 많이 가지려는 욕망(pleonexia), 구혼자들처럼 도시를 사랑하는 자들(erastai)이 되라는 페리클레스의 촉구, 그리고 개인적 에로스와 공동체적 에로스의 공속 관계를 통해 잘 드러나고 있다. 그리고 4절에서는『향연』의 파이드로스의 연인군대, 파우사니아스의 참주정과 소년애, 아리스토파네스의 남성-남성 욕망의 합법화 그리고 소크라테스-디오티마 연설의 불사적 명예에 대한 사랑을 통해, 정치적 에로스에 관한 담론이 논급된다. 연인군대, 참주정과 소년애, 남성-남성 욕망의 합법화 그리고 불사하는 명예에 대한 사랑(philotimia) 각각은 정치와 에로스의 공속 관계를 다시 한 번 확인시켜 줄 것이다.BR 이상의 정치적 에로스 담론에 관한 헤시오도스의 신화적이고 시적인 전통과 투퀴디데스의 실증주의적 역사, 그리고 플라톤의『향연』을 통해, 우리는 에로스가 성애를 초과하여 좀 더 넓은 의미로 사용됐고, 특히 국가적 차원에서 에로스의 정치적 함의를 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 에로스가 정치적 저항 운동의 에너지원이고, 완전히 다른 삶의 형식, 완전히 다른 사회를 향한 혁명적 욕망의 원천이라는 진단에는 에로스의 정치적 잠재성과 동시에 그것의 위험들에 대한 경고도 함께 들어 있다. Dear Editor,The April 2014 issue of Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics [1] presented eight essays regarding the use of nonhuman animals in biomedical research. While I appreciate the essays concerning contemporary research—which were well written and offered new thinking from the fields of ethics and ethology—I believe the journal, via the topics and the authors chosen, failed to communicate the most important fact regarding the current science pertinent to the use of nonhuman animals in research.The foundational reason for using chimpanzees and (...) other animals in research is their predictive value for human response to drugs and disease. This was alluded to by several of the authors when they discussed the necessity of using nonhuman animals. For example, Smith writes: “A common assumption in the selection of nonhuman animal subjects for research and the approval of research is that, if the risks of a procedure are too great for humans, and if there is a so-called scientific necessity, .. Pharmaceutical firms seek to fulfill their responsibilities to stakeholders by developing drugs that treat diseases. We evaluate the social and financial costs of developing new drugs relative to the realized benefits and find the industry falls short of its potential. This is primarily due to legislation-mandated reliance on animal test results in early stages of the drug development process, leading to a mere 10 percent success rate for new drugs entering human clinical trials. We cite hundreds of biomedical studies from (...) journals including Nature, Science, and the Journal of the American Medical Association to show animal modeling is ineffective, misleading to scientists, unable to prevent the development of dangerous drugs, and prone to prevent the development of useful drugs. Legislation still requires animal testing prior to human testing even though the pharmaceutical sector has better options that were unavailable when animal modeling was first mandated. We propose that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Congress should work together to abolish regulations and policies that require animal use. Doing so will benefit pharmaceutical industry stakeholders, including patients whose health depends on drugs and the many people who rely on the financial well-being of pharmaceutical firms. We argue that the recommendations made by the Institute of Medicine’s 2011 report, Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research : Assessing the Necessity, are methodologically and ethically confused. We argue that a proper understanding of evolution and complexity theory in terms of the science and ethics of using chimpanzees in biomedical research would have had led the committee to recommend not merely limiting but eliminating the use of chimpanzees in biomedical research. Specifically, we argue that a proper understanding of the (...) difference between the gross level of examination of species and examinations on finer levels can shed light on important methodological and ethical inconsistencies leading to ignorance of potentially unethical practices and policies regarding the use of animals in scientific research.
