What aspects of the data from studies of acquired category- specific impairments are relevant to theories of knowledge representation? Discussion in the target article focuses on the living/nonliving dichotomy. However, many case studies reveal considerably more complex patterns of impaired and preserved performance that undermine this distinction. We consider this evidence and discuss its implications for theories of knowledge representation.

Just as socially irresponsible organizational behavior leaves a punitive legacy on society, socially responsible organizations can foster curative change. This article examines whether small organizations can foster societal change toward more sustainable modes of living. We contend that consumption is deeply intertwined with social relations and norms, thus making individual behavioral change toward sustainability a matter of facilitating change in individual behavior, as well as in social norms and relations between organizations and consumers. We argue that it is in this (...) facilitation process that small firms can play a major role, by adopting upstream and downstream approaches to diffuse behavioral change. By synthesizing four key strands of literature -small businesses and corporate social responsibility, ethical consumption, community social marketing, and the diffusion of innovation — and using the exemplar case of Modbury, the iconic "plastic bag-free" town, we demonstrate how responsible small firms can influence communities, and the individuals therein, to encourage environmentally sustainable practice to diffuse and support change in society. Vroeger leek de keus simpel, meent neuroloog Antonio Damasio: je liet je meevoeren in de maalstroom van het modernisme of trok je terug in een klassiek Arcadië. Maar nu kunnen we ons niet langer aan de maalstroom onttrekken. De digitale revolutie biedt ons allerlei gemakken en voordelen, maar heeft ook mogelijk desastreuze gevolgen voor onze moraliteit. In plaats van ons in een Arcadië terug te trekken, moeten we ons daartegen teweer stellen.

Translation: How did life originate? What were the first life forms? How did the cells of our body evolve? Is natural selection the only mechanism whereby evolution occurs? What did Darwin mean with the term natural selection and do we still use that definition today? Does evolution occur slow or fast? Are we determined by our genes? We all ask ourselves these questions from time to time. Scientists however often get too technical and philosophers too speculative in their answers. This (...) book aims to form a bridge between the life and human sciences. Questions on the origin and evolution of life are analyzed critically from within different disciplines. The result is a state of the art, accessible for philosophers and scientists as well as non-academics. Many of the answered proposed can thereby be understood as complements, deviations and alternatives to the standard paradigm of biology, the Modern Synthesis. These deviating statements are bundles into 15 theses. The question then becomes in how far the Modern Synthesis should become the subject of revision based upon these theses. Original: Hoe is leven ontstaan? Welke vorm nam het eerste leven aan? Hoe ontstonden de cellen waaruit ons lichaam is opgebouwd? Is natuurlijke selectie het enige mechanisme waarlangs evolutie zich voordoet? Wat bedoelde Darwin met natuurlijke selectie en gebruiken we deze definitie vandaag nog? Voltrekt evolutie zich traag of snel? Worden we gedetermineerd door onze genen? We stellen ons allemaal deze vragen wel eens. Wetenschappers worden echter algauw te technisch en filosofen te speculatief bij het beantwoorden ervan. Dit boek wil een brug slaan tussen de natuurwetenschappen en de menswetenschappen en de vragen omtrent de oorsprong en evolutie van leven, kritisch en nuchter, vanuit verschillende disciplines analyseren. Het resultaat is een huidige stand van zaken, leesbaar, zowel voor filosofen als wetenschappers en ook voor de leek. Vele van de voorgestelde antwoorden kunnen daarbij begrepen worden als aanvullingen, afwijkingen of alternatieven van het standaardparadigma in de biologie: de Moderne Synthese. Deze leek begraven omdat de godsdienst zelf, m.n. het Christendom, begraven leek onder een vracht van beschuldigingen, zoals de neopositivistische negatie van de zinnigheid van godsdienstige taal; of Sartre’s stelling dat de godsdienst de mens van zijn authenticiteit berooft; of de Freudiaanse gedachte dat godsdienst een neurose is; of de Marxistische mening dat de godsdienst de (...) mens vervreemdt van de maatschappelijke erkelijkheid. Voorzover godsdienstfilosofie — laten we zeggen tot in de zestiger jaren — mogelijk leek en werkelijkheid was, dan voornamelijk als godsdienstkritiek. (shrink)

Toen de jonge Duitse natuurkundige Werner Heisenberg in 1925 ontdekte dat het gedrag van deeltjes op atomair niveau onbepaalbaar is, ontketende hij een wetenschappelijke revolutie die het moderne wereldbeeld op zijn kop zette. Tot het moment van Heisenbergs ontdekking dachten wetenschappers dat alles meetbaar was en leek het een kwestie van tijd voordat de mens de natuur geheel en al zou hebben doorgrond. Met de quantumfysica, waarvoor Heisenberg de grondslag legde, kwam aan dit optimisme een abrupt einde. Er bleek (...) een kloof te gapen tussen onze waarneming en de dynamiek waar alles uit voortkomt.00In?Quantum, de oerknal en God? onderneemt Maarten van Buuren een filosofische verkenning van de consequenties van Werner Heisenbergs ontdekking. Dat brengt Van Buuren tot een nieuw inzicht over de oorsprong van de dingen.?God is Natuur? stelde Baruch Spinoza in de 17e eeuw, maar met de opkomst van de moderne natuurkunde in de 18e en 19e eeuw raakte de natuur haar goddelijke status kwijt. Volgens Van Buuren keert God dankzij de quantumfysica terug als alomvattende kiemkracht in de Natuur. Het idee dat alle natuurprocessen gehoorzamen aan de wet van afkoeling en verval moet volgens hem worden herzien. Aan afkoeling en verval gaat een dynamische impuls vooraf waaruit alle dingen ontstaan en die de energie levert voor alles wat groeit en bloeit.?Vormkracht? is de motor van het universum.0. (shrink)

Ik ben dankbaar dat 12 collega’s met elk een specifieke expertise in de problematiek de moeite namen om mijn beschouwing over empathie en euthanasie in de psychiatrie met een kritisch oog te lezen en van commentaar te voorzien. Graag grijp ik de geboden kans om enkele kanttekeningen te plaatsen of verduidelijkingen te bieden bij deze commentaren. Mijn bedoeling is, vooreerst, om op die manier de insteek van mijn artikel en de centrale stellingen die ik verdedig verder toe te lichten: soms (...) lijk ik immers verkeerd te zijn begrepen of was ik wellicht niet helder genoeg. Daarnaast wil ik mijn gekende kritiek op de huidige legale en juridische regulering van euthanasie in de psychiatrie duidelijker motiveren. Op alle commentaren afzonderlijk antwoorden, leek me ondoenbaar en zou te ver voeren. Ik heb daarom een selectie gemaakt van een aantal cruciale bedenkingen die in meerdere bijdragen opdoken: ik hoop op die manier samen met mijn respondenten een bijdrage te leveren aan een maatschappelijk uiterst belangrijke discussie die, zoals één van de respondenten opmerkt, dringend nood heeft aan meer diepgang.
