‘The Cooling of Hearts’: Community Truth-Telling in Northern Uganda. [REVIEW]Ketty Anyeko, Erin Baines, Emon Komakech, Boniface Ojok, Lino Owor Ogora & Letha Victor - 2012 - Human Rights Review 13 (1):107-124.
Recent national and international debates on truth and reconciliation in Uganda have emphasized the importance of incorporating local-level mechanisms into a national transitional justice strategy. The Juba Peace Talks represented an opportunity to develop and articulate sufficient and just alternatives and complementary mechanisms to the international criminal model. The most commonly debated mechanism is the Acholi process known as mato oput (drinking the bitter root), a restorative justice approach to murder. Drawing on 2 months of research in nine internally displaced (...)

Beyond the Protestantism of Political Theology: Thinking the Politics of Theological Voluntarism.Anver M. Emon - 2016 - Studies in Christian Ethics 29 (2):190-203.
In an attempt to think through the Islamic alongside the Christian, this article draws upon the political theology of Carl Schmitt to reflect on the salience of sovereignty. But in doing so, the article re-reads Schmitt’s political theology for its Protestant voluntarism, and adopts a more robust theological voluntarism as a vehicle for reflecting on political thought across both Christian and Islamic history. Moreover, this approach to political theology makes possible reflections on how political theology, whether in Christian or Islamic (...)

    Strategic communication with reporting costs.Winand Emons & Claude Fluet - 2019 - Theory and Decision 87 (3):341-363.
A decision maker relies on information of parties affected by her decision. These parties try to influence her decision by selective disclosure of facts. As is well known from the literature, competition between the informed parties constrains their ability to manipulate information. We depart from this literature by introducing a cost to communicate. Our parties trade off their reporting cost against the effect on the decision. Some information is never revealed. In contrast to setups without communication costs, our decision maker (...)

The Future of 'Theological Ethics': Returning the Gaze.Anver M. Emon - 2012 - Studies in Christian Ethics 25 (2):223-235.
This article offers an Islamic legal perspective on the question posed by this symposium issue, namely the future of theological ethics. Concerned that abstract statements of value all too often play into an apologetics that hides more than it reveals, the article offers a paradigm that makes two specific contributions to the question of this symposium in a context of increasing tension over religious diversity in Europe and North America. First, it adopts a context-rich form of ethical engagement that weaves (...)

The fluid nature of water grabbing: the on-going contestation of water distribution between peasants and agribusinesses in Nduruma, Tanzania.Jeroen Vos, Hans Komakech, Gert Veldwisch & Chris Bont - 2016 - Agriculture and Human Values 33 (3):641-654.
This article contributes to the contemporary debate on land and water grabbing through a detailed, qualitative case study of horticultural agribusinesses which have settled in Tanzania, disrupting patterns of land and water use. In this paper we analyse how capitalist settler farms and their upstream and downstream peasant neighbours along the Nduruma river, Tanzania, expand and defend their water use. The paper is based on 3 months of qualitative field work in Tanzania. We use the echelons of rights analysis framework (...)

Steps toward preregistration of research on research integrity.Lex M. Bouter, Nicholas H. Steneck, Wilco H. M. Emons & Klaas Sijtsma - 2021 - Research Integrity and Peer Review 6 (1).
BackgroundA proposal to encourage the preregistration of research on research integrity was developed and adopted as the Amsterdam Agenda at the 5th World Conference on Research Integrity. This paper reports on the degree to which abstracts of the 6th World Conference in Research Integrity reported on preregistered research.MethodsConference registration data on participants presenting a paper or a poster at 6th WCRI were made available to the research team. Because the data set was too small for inferential statistics this report is (...)

Demons in the Consulting Room: Echoes of Genocide, Slavery and Extreme Trauma in Psychoanalytic Practice.Adrienne Harris, Margery Kalb & Susan Klebanoff (eds.) - 2016 - Routledge.
_Demons in the Consulting Room: Echoes of Genocide, Slavery and Extreme Trauma in Psychoanalytic Practice_ isthe second of two volumes addressing the overwhelming, often unmetabolizable feelings related to mourning, both on an individual and mass scale. Authors in this volume explore the potency of ghosts, ghostliness and the darker, often grotesque aspects of these phenomena. While ghosts can be spectral presences that we feel protective of, demons haunt in a particularly virulent way, distorting experience, our sense of reality and our (...)

Semiotic Function of Empathy in Text Emotion Assessment.Anastasia Kolmogorova, Alexander Kalinin & Alina Malikova - forthcoming - Biosemiotics:1-16.
The focus of this paper is to discuss the semiotic aspects of our findings from a project we conducted in the frame of Emotional Text Analysis paradigm. In the project, we intended to create a computer text classifier capable of effectively classifying texts into emotional categories. We agreed that we would need discrete data samples to input into it. For this, we asked 178 informants to give a verdict on the dominant emotion of 48 sample texts. Prior to their assessment (...)

Searching for a universal ethic: multidisciplinary, ecumenical, and interfaith responses to the Catholic natural law tradition.William C. Mattison & John Berkman (eds.) - 2014 - Grand Rapids, Michigan: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company.
In this volume twenty-three major scholars comment on and critically evaluate In Search of a Universal Ethic, the 2009 document written by the International Theological Commission (ITC) of the Catholic Church. That historic document represents an official Church contribution both to a more adequate understanding of a universal ethic and to Catholicism s own tradition of reflection on natural law. The essays in this book reflect the ITC document s complementary emphases of dialogue across traditions (universal ethic) and reflection on (...)

On the existence of zero rest mass particles.L. S. Mayants - 1981 - Foundations of Physics 11 (7-8):577-591.
It is shown that no concrete particle can have zero rest mass. A separate photon is proven to be a concrete particle. The nonexistence of the electromagnetic field as an independent physical reality is demonstrated. The existence of a subatomic electromagnetic particle of a very small rest mass, theemon, instead of the electromagnetic field, is stated. The compatibility of the notion of the emon with the special relativity theory is elucidated. Some corollaries of the existence of the emon (...)
