The way metrologists conceive of measurement has undergone a major shift in the last two decades. This shift can in great part be traced to a change in the statistical methods used to deal with the expression of measurement results, and, more particularly, with the calculation of measurement uncertainties. Indeed, as we show, the incapacity of the frequentist approach to the calculus of uncertainty to deal with systematic errors has prompted the replacement of the customary frequentist methods by fully Bayesian (...) procedures. The epistemological ramifications of the Bayesian approach merge with a deep empiricist mood tantamount to an “epistemic turn”: measurement results are analysed in terms of degrees of belief, and central concepts such as error and accuracy are called into question. We challenge the perspective entailed by this epistemic turn: we insist on the centrality of the concepts of error and accuracy by underlining the intentional character of measurement that is intimately linked to the process of correction of experimental data. We further circumvent the difficulties posed by the classical analysis of measurement by stressing the social rather than the epistemic dimension of measurement activities. (shrink)

Systems of units still fail to attract the philosophical attention they deserve, but this could change with the current reform of the International System of Units. Most of the SI base units will henceforth be based on certain laws of nature and a choice of fundamental constants whose values will be frozen. The theoretical, experimental and institutional work required to implement the reform highlights the entanglement of scientific, technological and social features in scientific enterprise, while it also invites a philosophical (...) inquiry that promises to overcome the tensions that have long obstructed science studies. The philosophical significance attached to the construction of systems of units has traditionally been confined to the notion of convention, while their adoption was considered to be the exclusive province of the history and sociology of science. Against this tradition, a close articulation between history, philosophy, and sociology of science is needed in order to analyse the recent reform of the International system of units. In the new SI, units are redefined on the basis of certain fundamental constants of nature, (...) established by physical theories, whose values are fixed without uncertainty. The purpose of this article is to show that the redefinition of SI units, far from being a convention, involves a holistic reconstruction of our concepts of quantities from accepted theoretical laws. Fixing the values of the defining constants stabilizes these laws within the framework of physics through a twofold adjustment procedure that ensures both a semantic coordination between theory and world and an intersubjective coordination between human agents required by social activities. This double adjustment implies a treatment of uncertainties that results in closely entwining the pursuit of truth as correspondence and truth as coherence which turn out to be complementary, thus highlighting the anthropological underpinnings of scientific realism. Two complementary debates of the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century are examined here: the debate on the legitimacy of hypotheses in the natural sciences and the debate on intentionality and ‘representations without object’ in philosophy. Both are shown to rest on two core issues: the attitude of the subject and the mode of presentation chosen to display a domain of phenomena. An orientation other than the one which contributed to shape twentieth-century philosophy of science is explored through the (...) analysis of the role given to assumptions in Boltzmann’s research strategy, where assumptions are contrasted to hypotheses, axioms, and principles, and in Meinong’s criticism of the privileged status attributed to representations in mental activities. Boltzmann’s computational style in mathematics and Meinong’s criticism of the confusion between representation and judgment give prominence to an indirect mode of presentation, adopted in a state of suspended belief which is characteristic of assumptions and which enables one to grasp objects that cannot be reached through direct representation or even analogies. The discussion shows how assumptions and the movement to fiction can be essential steps in the quest for objectivity. The conclusion restates the issues of the two debates in a contemporary perspective and shows how recent developments in philosophy of science and philosophy of language and mind can be brought together by arguing for a twofold conception of reference.Keywords: Assumption; Hypothesis; Description; Mode of presentation; Ludwig Boltzmann; Alexius Meinong. Progressive supranuclear palsy is a movement disorder with prominent tau neuropathology. Brain diseases with abnormal tau deposits are called tauopathies, the most common of which is Alzheimer's disease. Environmental causes of tauopathies include repetitive head trauma associated with some sports. To identify common genetic variation contributing to risk for tauopathies, we carried out a genome-wide association study of 1,114 individuals with PSP and 3,247 controls followed by a second stage in which we genotyped 1,051 cases and 3,560 controls for the (...) stage 1 SNPs that yielded P ≤ 10-3. We found significant previously unidentified signals associated with PSP risk at STX6, EIF2AK3 and MOBP. We confirmed two independent variants in MAPT affecting risk for PSP, one of which influences MAPT brain expression. The genes implicated encode proteins for vesicle-membrane fusion at the Golgi-endosomal interface, for the endoplasmic reticulum unfolded protein response and for a myelin structural component. © 2011 Nature America, Inc. Aus einer philosophisch-phanomenologischen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive heraus gewinnt Nadine Benz nahere Erkenntnisse uber das temporale Phanomen des Wartens. Zunachst wird die historische Entwicklung der Zeitvorstellung aus philosophisch-phanomenologischer Sicht thematisiert, spezifisch im Hinblick auf die Fragen nach Messbarkeit, Vermitteltheit und nach objektiven und subjektiven Komponenten von Zeiterfahrung in ihrer Aporetik. Im Anschluss wird vom Konzept der Lebenswelt zur Literatur ubergeleitet: Die vorliegende Studie bindet die Aporien der Zeit zunachst theoretisch in eine Narratologie von Zeiterfahrung ein, die vor allem den Faktor (...) des Fiktiven produktiv berucksichtigt. Schliesslich werden die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und Instrumente fur eine Analyse von Erzahltexten des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts fruchtbar gemacht. Hier erlangen die literarischen Konfigurationen von Wartezeit als Semantiken des Wartens fur die Subjekte der fiktiven Zeiterfahrung einen konstitutiven Status. (shrink)

Der Philanthrop Joachim Heinrich Campe publizierte gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zwei Ratgeber für bürgerliche Mädchen und Jungen. Damit wollte er sie besser auf ihre zukünftigen geschlechtsspezifischen Pflichten vorbereiten. Sein Mädchenratgeber Väterlicher Rath für meine Tochter erhält in der modernen Geschlechterforschung.

Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag stellt eine differenzierungstheoretische Perspektive auf Sportbeteiligung und Sportinteresse der Erwachsenenbevölkerung vor. Zugrunde liegen empirische Daten aus einer eigenen repräsentativen Bevölkerungsumfrage in Deutschland vom Herbst 2003, in der die Inklusion der Erwachsenen in sämtliche gesellschaftlichen Teilsysteme ermittelt wurde. Die Inklusion in den Sport wird mit Bezug auf die sekundäre Leistungsrolle des Breitensportlers und die Publikumsrolle des Sportzuschauers betrachtet; sodann wird möglichen Zusammenhängen zwischen der Ausprägung der Inklusion in den Sport mit ungleichheitstheoretisch geläufigen Merkmalen sozialer Lage, darüber hinaus dann (...) auch mit der Ausprägung anderer Inklusionsverhältnisse nachgegangen. La philosophie de Baudrillard est inédite puisqu'il possède une façon originale de voir le monde, ses yeux étant ceux d'un philosophe-critique, d'un sociologue, d'un journaliste et d'un pataphysicien. Ce faisant, il possède une manière fort intéressante de nommer les faits. D'où toute la série de termes qu'il revisite ou invente surtout ceux formés par le préfixe hyper comme hyperconsommation, hypermarché, hyperréel, hypercorps, hyperespace et bien d'autres. Malgré sa quête du sens et du réel, Baudrillard débouche sur le non-sens et proclame (...) moyennement l'absence du réel. C'est comme si tout l'objectif de sa quête était uniquement la description du réel disparu et non la recherche et l'instauration du réel voire d'un nouveau réel. La recherche conduite ici s'attaque à la pensée hyperréelle de Jean Baudrillard tout en présentant l'originalité de cette pensée singulière et controversée. (shrink)

A large number of feminist philosophers and social critics accept that Simone de Beauvoir's conception of transcendence in The Second Sex relies on masculinist ontology. In contrast with feminist interpretations that see Beauvoir claiming the success of masculinist ontology, this article argues that transcendence as masculinist ontology does not succeed in The Second Sex because it requires a relation of domination, something contrary to its own definition of freedom-producing relations. The Second Sex obliquely reveals this failure, but Beauvoir does not (...) ruminate upon it. Instead, Beauvoir turns to imagine freedom-producing gender relations in the future where the body and consciousness are already emancipated from constitutive domination. This is a future that resonates with G. W. F. Hegel's `Stoic Consciousness'. The significance of this finding is that the location of freedom neither resides in the intertwinement of the male body and consciousness previously argued to be the case, for Beauvoir, nor does it reside in the intertwinement of the female body and consciousness. Rather, freedom resides in the intertwinement of male and female bodies and consciousness where domination is already absent, that is, a place outside of history. Thus, the conclusion of The Second Sex can be read as a consolation and an escape from the inescapable limits of the present. (shrink)

Im Rahmen der philosophischen und außerphilosophischen Beschäftigung mit der Frage nach dem guten Leben im Alter trifft man in der Regel auf einen von zwei Vorschlägen, wie am besten mit den Folgen des eigenen Alters umzugehen sei. Entweder wird dazu geraten, die Folgen des Alters so lange wie möglich zu bekämpfen oder dazu, sie zu akzeptieren. Das Ziel dieses Beitrags besteht darin, zu einem besseren Verständnis des guten Lebens im Alter beizutragen, indem diese beiden Vorschläge und die ihnen zugrundeliegenden Annahmen (...) genauer untersucht werden. Im Anschluss an einige methodische Vorbemerkungen zu den grundlegenden Begriffen „Altern“ und „Alter“ in Abschnitt 1 soll gezeigt werden, dass beide Strategien plausible Aspekte ins Spiel bringen, die mit Blick auf die Frage nach dem guten Leben im Alter berücksichtigt werden sollten, sich aber auch mit Einwänden konfrontiert sehen (vgl. die Abschnitte 2 und 3). Im letzten Abschnitt soll dafür argumentiert werden, dass sich die bewahrenswerten Aspekte der beiden Strategien als komplementäre Bestandteile eines praktisch klugen Umgangs mit altersbedingten Veränderungen verstehen lassen (Abschnitt 4). Patients who enter the health care system for acute care may become “permanent” patients of the hospital when a lack of resources precludes discharge to the next level of post-acute care. Legal, professional, and ethical norms prohibit physician and acute care hospital “dumping” of these patients. However, limitless use of hospital resources for indefinite stays is untenable. In the absence of hospital policy addressing this specific issue, the availability of financial support will be determined by health care professionals' willingness to (...) advocate for the patient and negotiate with hospital administrators and the ability and willingness of administrators to authorize the use of hospital resources. We propose five mid-level ethical principles to guide advocacy and administrative decision-making about provision of financial support for post-acute care for those patients who cannot afford it. We use two actual, de-identified cases to illustrate how these principles can be used to make reasoned, consistent decisions about the provision of post-acute financial support. (shrink)

Trois lois ont, entre 1993 et 2002, codifié le dispositif français dit de « l’accouchement sous X », qui autorise une femme à accoucher gratuitement dans une maternité sans révéler son identité. La première a durci ce dispositif en l’insérant dans le code civil, la seconde a tenté de l’assouplir et la dernière a créé un organisme chargé de faciliter, pour les personnes nées « sous X », l’accès à la connaissance de leurs origines. Dans les débats parlementaires qui ont (...) précédé l’adoption de ces lois, l’histoire a largement été utilisée comme argument, mais on est passé de l’histoire nationale à l’histoire personnelle, et de la « tradition française » justifiant le maintien du secret de l’accouchement, au droit à la vérité de la biographie légitimant la possibilité de la réversibilité du secret. This article argues that Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex continues to teach academic feminism why difference feminism holds productive and generative potential for feminists and why equality feminism has been consistently subject to criticism since the second wave of feminism. Using Hegel's master—slave dialectic as a lens to interpret subjectivity in The Second Sex, this text reveals an aspect of equality feminism that relies upon masculine subjectivity, a subjectivity that inherently constitutes otherness. This reliance on masculine subjectivity is anathema (...) to difference feminism because the otherness inherently constituted by such subjectivity simultaneously and paradoxically constitutes women's ongoing subordination. In assuming equality with men by adopting masculine subjectivity, women are not immune to constituting women as other. Difference feminisms, on the other hand, start from where women are as they choose to see themselves socially, economically, racially, sexually. The Second Sex reveals that difference feminisms imagine freedom in order to identify the difference that would empower women, not strictly towards sex equality with a stable referent, but towards emancipatory projects that make a difference for women themselves. The Second Sex portends that such imagined freedom has not been actualized, thus the present remains circumscribed by power that subordinates the difference in question. When read alongside The Second Sex, the tension between equality and difference feminisms can still be read as feminisms that coexist with one another, each with their limitations, each with productive potential and cautionary rejoinders. St. Omer MS 239 contains the unstudied Lectura of Pastor de Serrescuderio, OFM, who read the Sentences at Paris in 1332-33. The article traces his academic and ecclesiastical career from provincial minister in Provence to cardinal at Avignon, and includes the list of question titles from his Lectura.

Pour que la pratique filmique se constitue en outil d’analyse parmi la panoplie des sciences sociales actuelle, il importe de s’interroger sur son apprentissage. Or, comparé aux entretiens, aux statistiques et à la documentation écrite, imprimée ou photographique, on constate ici la très faible place accordée à l’instrument filmique dans les formations de sociologie ou même d’anthropologie. Il est alors rendu compte de l’expérience de l’apprentissage audiovisuel mené, depuis plusieurs années, auprès d’étudiants en licence à l’université de Tours.

La cohabitation avec la dialyse à domicile, ce lieu privé habituellement préservé de la maladie, invite à des questionnements sur la dynamique du couple au regard du nouveau rôle de soignant endossé par le conjoint et de celui de patient assigné au conjoint malade. Les auteurs, psychologues cliniciennes, interrogent ici les motivations conscientes et inconscientes qui conduisent à cette décision commune et leurs retentissements sur la dynamique du couple. Différentes configurations relationnelles observées dans notre clinique seront abordées. L’article, cas clinique (...) à l’appui, montre l’intérêt d’un groupe thérapeutique avec malades et conjoints pour mettre à jour les enjeux, au niveau de la relation de couple, d’une prise en charge à domicile. La contribution de Jean Buridan à ce débat est bien connue mais à ce jour, l’identité d’un certain « magister M. de Montescalerio », adversaire réaliste de Buridan et auteur d’une Determinatio de puncto, est restée inconnue. ZusammenfassungIm Zentrum der vorliegenden Arbeit steht das anthropometrische Forschungsprogramm der Konstitutionslehre während des Ersten Weltkrieges und die davon angestoßenen Reihenuntersuchungen der Internisten Theodor Brugsch, Hermann Rautmann und Max Berliner, deren Vorstöße in die Variabilitätsstatistik sowie die anschließende konstitutionspathologische Debatte um die Definition einer körperlichen Norm.Um der Konstitutionslehre eine Datengrundlage für den „Normkörper“ zu schaffen, unternahm im Umfeld des Ersten Weltkrieges eine Reihe junger deutscher Internisten umfassende anthropometrische Studien und nutzte dabei die Gelegenheit, die ihnen der Krieg zu Reihenuntersuchungen an Soldaten (...) bot, ohne vorher über Messmethoden, Vergleichs- und Auswertungsmöglichkeiten zu reflektieren. Dies änderte sich jedoch in der Folgezeit und führte nicht nur zu einem starken Zuwachs an methodischer sondern auch an mathematisch-statistischer Kompetenz. Zudem problematisierte das konstitutionspathologische Projekt den Normbegriff, was in der intensiven Normdebatte der 1920er Jahre mündete. Damit stellen die wenigen Jahre nach Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs bis 1922 für die Konstitutionslehre nicht nur einen Drehpunkt hinsichtlich des reflektierten Methodengebrauchs dar, sondern leiteten auch eine Neuausrichtung ihrer Forschungsfragen ein: weg vom „Normkörper“ hin zur Individualität. At the center of this work stands the anthropometric research program during World War I for studying constitutional medicine and the connected series of investigations by the medical internists Theodor Brugsch, Hermann Rautmann and Max Berliner, their advances in the statistics of variability as well as the subsequent debate in constitutional medicine and pathology on the definition of the physical norm.In order to create a data basis for the “normal” body in the study of constitutional medicine, a series of young (...) German internists undertook comprehensive anthropometric studies in the context of World War I, thereby taking advantage of the opportunity offered them by war to conduct a series of examinations of soldiers, but without having first reflected on methods of measurement, comparison, and evaluation. At the same time, the concept of the “normal” body, then only vaguely formed, still needed to be critically expounded. However, this changed during the subsequent period and led not only to a stronger emphasis on methodology, rather also to greater competency in mathematical statistics and philosophical cogitation on the meaning of the “norm”. In this way, constitutional medicine originated the potent medical norm debate of the early 1920s which still resonates in medical theory today. By this means the few years following the end of World War I not only represented a turning point for constitutional medicine regarding the reflective use of methodology, but also introduced a new orientation of their research questions: away from the “normal” body to individuality. Cet article reprend sur de nouveaux frais la question de la carrière académique de Francis Caracciolo, et de son importance dans le milieu de Durand de Saint-Pourçain et de ses contemporains. Il confirme que Caracciolo était bien la personne visée par la désignation « cancellarius » dans les textes théologiques parisiens de la seconde décennie du xiv e siècle, y compris les Notabilia Cancellarii ; la thèse de Harclay s’en trouve réfutée. L’article rejette également l’attribution à Caracciolo de deux Quodlibeta (...) dans le ms. Vat. lat. 932 tout en envisageant la possibilité que Radulphus de Hotot en soit l’auteur. (shrink)
