Xavier Barillot - 2004 - Corpus 3.

Small corpora for a big database on contemporary oral English: what is at stake in the light of the PAC program?Cécile Chatellier Viollain - 2018 - Corpus 18.

Tonkens has issued a seemingly impossible challenge, to articulate a comprehensive ethical framework within which artificial moral agents satisfy a Kantian inspired recipe—"rational" and "free"—while also satisfying perceived prerogatives of machine ethicists to facilitate the creation of AMAs that are perfectly and not merely reliably ethical. Challenges for machine ethicists have also been presented by Anthony Beavers and Wendell Wallach. Beavers pushes for the reinvention of traditional ethics to avoid "ethical nihilism" due to the reduction of morality to mechanical causation. (...)

    Les atlas linguistiques sont-ils des corpus?Esther Baiwir & Pascale Renders - 2013 - Corpus 12:27-37.

It is inevitable that readers expect fidelity from translations. That language mirror with a sort of precision that enables the reader to become of another location, condition, to grasp in English in a similar vein as readers of Portuguese might from João Guimarães Rosa’s GRANDE SERTÃO: VEREDAS. Д.Б Волков - 2015 - Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 44 (2):166-182.

In recent years, simultaneous localization and mapping based on stochastic state-transition / observation models and Bayesian estimation technique has been the mainstream of the mobile robot mapping research. In contrast to this trend, we present an alternative formulation of the map building problem from the viewpoint of non-linear dimensionality reduction or manifold learning. In this framework, the robot map building is interpreted as a problem of reconstructing the coordinates of objects so that proximities between them in the space of robot's (...)

Recently we proposed a method of compiling prioritized circumscription into answer set programming. However, its encoding has the guess and check structure, where the candidates are generated by the guess program and the check is expressed by the inconsistency of the check program. In this paper, we present another method which compiles prioritized circumscription into a single general disjunctive program by means of integration of the guess and check programs. The answer sets of the transformed GDP yield models of a (...)

Inductive Logic Programming has been drawn a big attention as a new research area of inductive inference based on first order logic. The main advantages of ILP are the very rich expressive power and the capability of utilizing arbitrary background knowledge represented in Prolog programs. However ILP usually needs enormous computational time to obtain the hypotheses. To cope with this problem, an efficient algorithm is needed. In this paper, an ILP system Progol is adopted as the target system. Progol is (...)

Inductive Logic Programming employs expressive representation languages, i.e. Prolog Programs, so that ILP can handle structural data which other traditional inductive learner can not or hardly do. In this reason, ILP has been regarded as one of the most important technologies in the area of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Databases recently. However, ILP usually needs enormous computational time to obtain the results from a huge amount of data appearing in such problems as Data Mining. To cope with this (...)

The double function of the interpretant in Peirce’s theory of signs.Jimmy Aames - 2018 - Semiotica 2018 (225):39-55.
There seem to be two distinct aspects to the role played by the Interpretant in Peirce’s account of the sign relation. On the one hand, the Interpretant is said to establish the relation between the Sign and Object. That is, the Sign can “stand for” its Object, and thereby actually function as a Sign, only by virtue of its being interpreted as such by an Interpretant. On the other hand, the Interpretant is said to be “determined” by the Sign in (...)

Conservative reduction classes of Krom formulas.Stål O. Aanderaa, Egon Börger & Harry R. Lewis - 1982 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 47 (1):110-130.
A Krom formula of pure quantification theory is a formula in conjunctive normal form such that each conjunct is a disjunction of at most two atomic formulas or negations of atomic formulas. Every class of Krom formulas that is determined by the form of their quantifier prefixes and which is known to have an unsolvable decision problem for satisfiability is here shown to be a conservative reduction class. Therefore both the general satisfiability problem, and the problem of satisfiability in finite (...)

    Merleau-Ponty’s Concept of Nature and the Ontology of Flesh.Ane Faugstad Aarø - 2010 - Biosemiotics 3 (3):331-345.
The essay attempts to delineate how Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception can be applied to theories of sign processes, and how it reworks the framework of the phenomenalist conception of communication. His later philosophy involved a reformulation of subjectivity and a resolution of the subject/object dualism. My claim is that this non-reductionist theory of perception reveals a different view of nature as we experience it in an expressive and meaningful interaction. The perspective that another living being has and communicates entails (...)

    Big toy models: Representing physical systems as Chu spaces.Samson Abramsky - 2012 - Synthese 186 (3):697 - 718.
We pursue a model-oriented rather than axiomatic approach to the foundations of Quantum Mechanics, with the idea that new models can often suggest new axioms. This approach has often been fruitful in Logic and Theoretical Computer Science. Rather than seeking to construct a simplified toy model, we aim for a 'big toy model', in which both quantum and classical systems can be faithfully represented—as well as, possibly, more exotic kinds of systems. To this end, we show how Chu spaces can (...)

We show that there are continuum-many such graphs, and study their connected components. The essay’s argument is twofold: First, it contends that Ricœur’s articulation of the social imaginary in the Lectures on Ideology and Utopia, reveals a turn to a general theory of culture, which is best understood as a shift from a hermeneutics of culture to a cultural hermeneutics. This move forms part of his philosophical anthropology of “real social life.” The essay proposes it is epitomized in Ricœur’s changing reception of Cassirer. Second, the essay hermeneutically reconstructs the emergence of this turn (...)

This study integrates insights from stakeholder theory and the literature on competitive dynamics and incumbent responses to entry. While research in economics and strategy has examined how market incumbents respond to new entrants, little is known about the heterogeneity in these responses to the entry of a stakeholder-oriented firm; our study addresses this research gap. Findings from a novel, longitudinal dataset of 206 granularly defined pharmaceutical markets in India suggest that stakeholder-oriented firm entry in these markets is associated with an (...)

According to the theory of dispositions here defended, to have a disposition is to have some (non-dispositional) property that enters into a law of a certain form. The theory does not have the crucial difficulty of the singular material implication account of dispositions, but at the same time avoids the unfortunate notion of 'reduction sentences'. It is further argued that no dispositional explanation is one of the covering-law type; but the theory shows how, for any dispositional explanation! To construct a (...)

This is an essay on McDowell’s naturalism. It is, pace some commentators, argued that McDowell’s naturalism does not end up in any strange metaphysical positions in the philosophy of mind, because second nature non-reductively supervenes on first nature and have causal powers. Pace certain other commentators, it is also argued that McDowell can be read as drawing a clear line between ethical platonism, and his own naturalized platonism, but only at the cost of landing in standard naturalism.

Sometimes I have a hard time even thinking about the true extent of what all happened. It’s like my mind doesn’t have that type of scope, like when I think about the word (...)

Polyadic and cylindric algebras of sentences.Mohamed Amer & Tarek Sayed Ahmed - 2006 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 52 (5):444-449.
In this note we give an interpretation of cylindric algebras as algebras of sentences of first order logic. We show that the isomorphism types of such algebras of sentences coincide with the class of neat reducts of cylindric algebras. Also we show how this interpretation sheds light on some recent results. This is done by likening Henkin's Neat Embedding Theorem to his celebrated completeness proof.

  43. A Field Guide to Mechanisms: Part I.Holly Andersen - 2014 - Philosophy Compass 9 (4):274-283.
In this field guide, I distinguish five separate senses with which the term ‘mechanism’ is used in contemporary philosophy of science. Many of these senses have overlapping areas of application but involve distinct philosophical claims and characterize the target mechanisms in relevantly different ways. This field guide will clarify the key features of each sense and introduce some main debates, distinguishing those that transpire within a given sense from those that are best understood as concerning distinct senses. The ‘new mechanisms’ (...)

    Advances in molecular biology of hibernation in mammals.Matthew T. Andrews - 2007 - Bioessays 29 (5):431-440.
Mammalian hibernation is characterized by profound reductions in metabolism, oxygen consumption and heart rate. As a result, the animal enters a state of suspended animation where core body temperatures can plummet as low as −2.9°C. Not only can hibernating mammals survive these physiological extremes, but they also return to a normothermic state of activity without reperfusion injury or other ill effects. This review examines recent findings on the genes, proteins and small molecules that control the induction and maintenance of hibernation (...)

In this paper, we propose a regularity theory of causation. The theory aims to be reductive and to align with our pre‐theoretic understanding of the causal relation. We show that our theory can account for a wide range of causal scenarios, including isomorphic scenarios, omissions, and scenarios which suggest that causation is not transitive.

    Michael Psellos’ ‘Arrangement’ of Hermias’ Commentary on Plato’s Phaedrus.Georges Arabatzis - 2010 - Peitho 1 (1):111-120.
The Byzantine philosopher Michael Psellos wrote a brief treatise entitled An Explanation of the Drive of the Soul Chariot and the Army of Gods According to Plato in the Phaedrus. The treatise consists of a compilation of excerpts from Hermias’ commentary on the Phaedrus. Psellos does not mention Hermias’ name but rather traces the origins of the treatise back to some “Greek theologians”. Psellos’ text presents a great interpretative challenge: the order of the myths about the charioteer and the parade (...)

Moderating the Relationship Between Price and Perceived Value of Ethical Products.Rafael A. Araque-Padilla, María José Montero-Simó, Pilar Rivera-Torres & Carlos Aragón-Gutiérrez - 2015 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 28 (2):217-230.
Interest in ethical aspects associated to product acquisition and consumption is a growing trend among consumers. In this context, the concept of “product with ethical attributes” has arisen to refer to products with explicit social and environmental characteristics. However, one of the factors that most hinders the purchasing of these products is certainly price. Given the difficulty of reducing price, the question that arises is the extent to which other product attributes can attenuate the negative impact of price on perceived (...)
