How questions and why questions interact in complex ways within biological practice. One of the most fruitful accounts to think about this relation is the widely known systemic approach, which has its origin mainly in the works of Robert Cummins (1975, 1983). As we will show, this approach effectively manages to capture much of what biologists do, especially in areas such as molecular biology, neuroscience and neuroethology. Our aim with this work is to discuss the metatheoretical status of the presuppositions (...) behind systemic analysis. We will hold that these assumptions are of an empirical nature, and that they can be reconstructed as parts of a theory. (shrink)

If the history of metaphysics is, as Heidegger suggests, essentially humanist, the questions that have been addressed to humanism, united under the label of posthumanism, face the challenge of establishing a rupture with a bimillenary hegemony of the human against the non-human. This paper will be interested in problematizing the way in which the humanist model has attributed to man the privilege of being the only being capable of acting and shaping the world. The objective will be to explore an (...) expanded perspective of agency towards the animal, vegetable and material world. From the proliferation of the possibilities of agency we will discover, in turn, different ways of forming and inhabiting worlds: the world as a totalizing sphere, as a set of surrounding worlds and as a mixture of material agencies. Finally, this perspective tending towards the de-hierarchization of human agency will be contrasted with the difficulties posed by the notion of the Anthropocene. Man's responsibility for the geological scope of his activity re-emphasizes the centrality of his capacity for agency, thus showing the contradictions that arise in attempts to go beyond humanism. Que la democracia y los procesos de democratización no siguen caminos unidireccionales hacia un único fin o meta es una evidencia. Volver a leer los debates que se dieron durante la independencia de las colonias americanas y la revolución francesa a fines del siglo xviii y, poco más tarde, durante las discusiones que precedieron a la formación de la Confederación Suiza, son tan solo unas pocas pruebas de lo dicho.

Social inequalities are partly caused by habitual organizational practices. In this vein, to overcome those, organizations now need to develop new organizational capabilities aimed at enhancing their attention towards societal issues. In our study, we apply the theory of mindfulness to explain how it may help organizations overcome habitual organizing that fuels social inequalities. Guided by the microfoundational perspective of organizational capability, we conceptualize individual characteristics, processes, and structures that collectively form mindfulness capability for social justice. We perceive it as (...) an organizational capability that reflects the extent to which an organization possesses a collective social justice awareness, i.e., awareness of the impact on social justice in society through its organizational practices. We argue that, when adopted by organizations, mindfulness, by increasing the awareness of the organizational impact on society, helps notice, examine, and question the correctness of taken-for-granted organizational practices. From our perspective, this new capability will lead to changes in organizational practices that fuel social inequalities. Our study contributes to the literature on sustainable organizational development and mindfulness research in organizations. Managerial implications and future research directions are also discussed. Este breve ensayo confronta la experiencia de promoción de instituciones de participación ciudadana en América Latina con la desarrollada recientemente en los ayuntamiento del cambio en España, particularmente en Madrid y Barcelona.

El sacrificio humano es una imagen frecuente en las religiones antiguas, concretamente en la griega, y su estudio ha levantado numerosos enfrentamientos entre corrientes historiográficas distintas. Uno de los casos más sobresalientes es del culto a Zeus en el Monte Liceo, que aquí analizamos. Las fuentes literarias reflejan la creencia de los griegos en estos sacrificios humanos, así que podemos decir que los sacrificios fueron reales porque fueron usados para construir paisaje y, por lo tanto, realidad.

Neste artigo argumenta-se que, de acordo com o autor de A Medicina Antiga, a medicina não se preocupa e não deve-se preocupar com o ser humano em termos gerais, mas com pessoas individuais. Assim, de acordo com A Medicina Antiga, a medicina é uma ciência do particular e consiste em uma pesquisa empírica. Por esta razão, A Medicina Antiga é talvez o primeiro reconhecimento deliberado do valor científico do conhecimento aproximado do particular.

Arguing against the long-standing belief that Thuc. 3.82.4 refers to words changing their meanings, this article shows that, according to the passage, the way in which people value actions and apply value-words to actions in peace differs from how they value and apply value-words to the same types of actions in stasis. But the meaning of the value-words themselves remains the same in both circumstances. The passage is about neither meaning nor the propagandistic manipulation of language but about the distorting (...) effect of stasis on the moral assessment of actions. (shrink)

The heroic figure is a human fiction of the wholly singular. In the hero, discourses about ideals and exemplariness, extra-ordinariness and exceptionalness, agonality, transgressivity, or good and evil become condensed into a single individual. Thus, the hero is the opposite of the masses. As it is argued in this article, the answer to the question of what distinguishes a hero lies in the supererogatory moment, the reference to the hero’s quality of more than can be expected: the heroic figure does (...) more than he or she has to, more than duty requires of an ordinary person, and this is the reason they are heroized. However, this also points to a dialectic moment of the heroic in which the opposition between the hero and the many seems to be suspended. Following Niklas Luhmann, the hero represents the paradox of conformity through deviance, because through the example of their abnormality they produce in others a desire to imitate them. In the end, there is a collective appeal of the heroic that affects even the conceptual complement of the hero: the crowd which is characterized by the disappearance of the individual within it. Inspired by Luhmann’s sociological reflections on the heroic as well as Elias Canetti’s anthropological perspectives on the phenomena of the crowd, this article traces the rhetoric of the hero along its path from the singular to the plural. Against the backdrop of the analysis of the heroic in revolutionary Iran, a generalizable typology is proposed that distinguishes between the hero, the collective of heroes, the heroic collective, and collective heroism. This order reflects a progression that is analogous to the conjunction of the one and the many, moving qualitatively from the distinct figure of the hero to the indistinguishable masses. (shrink)

Este trabajo presenta la traducción de un diálogo atribuido a Platón que los estudiosos concuerdan en clasificar como apócrifo: Axíoco. Pese al carácter espurio de la obra, las temáticas desarrolladas, que a partir del interrogante de la muerte abordan cuestiones antropológicas, éticas y metafísicas, muestran una evidente vocación filosófica. Asimismo, los vínculos estructurales, conceptuales y hasta ciertas referencias intertextuales con escuelas consolidadas como el platonismo y el epicureísmo hacen que el diálogo se inscriba en una rica tradición de pensamiento cuya (...) vigencia resulta indudable. The biggest contemporary challenge to democratic legitimacy gravitates around the crisis of democratic representation.

Quentin Meillassoux (1967) es un filósofo francés que ha ganado reconocimiento en el campo de las producciones filosóficas contemporáneas a partir de la publicación de Après la finitude. Essai sur la nécessité de la contingence (2006). La intención más notable de su filosofía, denominada por él mismo como materialismo especulativo, ha sido la de señalar los efectos lógicos y materiales producidos por el hecho de que la filosofía haya abandonado la tarea de pensar el absoluto. Para Meillassoux, las posibilidades efectivas (...) de plantearnos un nuevo futuro, es decir, un porvenir que no sea la repetición novedosa del pasado, se encuentra en la exploración de las tierras del absoluto que, desde Kant, han sido abandonadas por la filosofía y hoy son propiedad de fanatismos y creencias religiosas que no tienen un enlace racional con la trascendencia. Tomando como punto de partida estas consideraciones, el presente artículo aborda los siguientes interrogantes: ¿Cómo se establece el vínculo entre el absoluto y la emergencia de lo nuevo? ¿Mediante qué mecanismos formales se podría, a partir de las operaciones lógicas de la especulación, actualizar potenciales que nos habiliten formas aún desconocidas de establecer enlaces lógicos con mundos más allá de nuestro entendimiento actual? En base a textos seleccionados de Meillassoux, incluyendo Après la finitude. Essai sur la nécessité de la contingence (2006), Métaphysique et fiction des mondes hors-science (2015), Le Nombre Et La Sirene Un Dechiffrage Du Coup de Des de Mallarme (2011), “L’immanence d’outre monde” (2009), “Potentialité et virtualité” (2006), y “Soustraction et contraction. À propos d'une remarque de Deleuze sur Matière et mémoire” (2007), este artículo ensaya algunas respuestas acerca del valor del materialismo especulativo en la creación y actualización de nuevos potenciales de un inimaginable futuro humano. Sin embargo, en su obra de posguerra Verdad y existencia, la dimensión de la materialidad adquiere un renovado énfasis y como consecuencia, la libertad se expresa en un movimiento afirmativo de desvelamiento del Ser. Estos dos sentidos que adquiere la noción de libertad constituyen distintas manifestaciones del mismo fenómeno y son el resultado de la diversidad de formas (...) en que el propio Sartre articula la relación paradójica entre libertad y facticidad, subjetividad y objetividad. El presente texto propone una articulación entre las principales nociones del posfundacionalismo de Jean Luc-Nancy, Alain Badiou, Claude Lefort y Ernesto Laclau y lo que denomino “vitalismo dialectico” de Vladimir Safatle. El cruce planteado es significativo en tanto se considera que la propuesta de Safatle (en obras como El circuito de los afectos [2019] y A paixão do negativo [2006]) viene a habilitar la inscripción del principal axioma teórico posfundacionalista, “la ausencia de fundamento último”, en la propia constitución psicoafectiva del (...) sujeto. Esta operación daría lugar a una biopolítica posfundacional emancipatoria posible de encarnar nuevos cuerpos o formas de subjetivación. (shrink)

The philosophical and philological study of Aristotle fragments and lost works has fallen somewhat into the background since the 1960’s. This is regrettable considering the different and innovative directions the study of Aristotle has taken in the last decades. This collection of new peer-reviewed essays applies the latest developments and trends of analysis, criticism, and methodology to the study of Aristotle’s fragments. The individual essays use the fragments as tools of interpretation, shed new light on different areas of Aristotle philosophy, (...) and lay bridges between Aristotle’s lost and extant works. The first part shows how Aristotle frames parts of his own understanding of Philosophy in his published, 'popular' work. The second part deals with issues of philosophical interpretation in Aristotle’s extant works which can be illuminated by fragments of his lost works. The philosophical issues treated in this section range from Theology to Natural Science, Psychology, Politics, and Poetics. As a whole, the book articulates a new approach to Aristotle’s lost works, by providing a reassessment and new methodological explorations of the fragments. (shrink)

The present article offers a reflection upon the welfare systems of states which attract large numbers of immigrants and must therefore take responsibility for awarding equal rights to immigrants and avoiding their becoming new marginalised groups. To this end, a brief description is given of the evolution of the profile of immigrants, which leads to a consideration of future demand on the basis of the resources offered by the states accepting immigrants and of the new population profiles, paying special attention (...) to the variables determined by family composition , cultural aspects and the legal-administrative situation. We link cleansing effects to contemporary cognitive theories via an account of event representation that provides an explicit, neurally plausible mechanism for encoding objects and their associations across time. It explains separation as resulting from weakening associations between the self in the present and the self in the past.

El problema se ha nombrado de muchas maneras: incapacidad de proveer políticas acertadas, corrupción, desencanto o abstención electoral, entre otros indicadores de la crisis de legitimidad que atraviesan al sistema. En la búsqueda de soluciones, se discute la viabilidad de mecanismos alternativos o complementarios a los representativos: ¿Es el referendo un buen instrumento para incluir a la ciudadanía en la toma de decisiones? ¿Pueden los procesos deliberativos contrarrestar los efectos de las fake news? ¿Debería el gobierno de los expertos reemplazar (...) a los "incompetentes políticos"? o ¿Debería promoverse el gobierno de "los comunes", seleccionados por sorteo? Aquí discutimos determinados modelos de democracia disponibles -representativa, participativa, deliberativa, aleatoria y monitorizada- para proponer una "ecología de la participación". En otras palabras, sugerimos entender los mecanismos de ejercicio del poder, en un sistema determinado, como estructuras de incentivos socio-políticos que promueven la formación de consensos o la polarización, el control o la delegación, la ampliación de la agenda pública o su restricción, la demagogia o el debate informado. Resumen El presente texto realiza un análisis de la estructura narrativa, y de la estética y contenido de la obra cinematográfica de Fernando Arrabal Iré como un caballo loco. Más allá de su reconocida trayectoria como dramaturgo, esta obra singular construye de forma profunda y estructurada una narración compleja, llena de referentes biográficos, literarios y mediáticos, más allá de la simple apariencia de caos, confusión y absurdo. La intertextualidad de su estructura narrativa obliga a realizar un análisis cualitativo e interdisciplinar, (...) para llegar a los aspectos más escondidos e insospechados de la película, donde nada es casual. Entre las principales aportaciones se encuentran la dualidad narrativa y estructural que la conecta tanto con Esquilo como con las películas de viaje y carretera.: This article makes an analysis of the narrative structure, of the aesthetics and content of Fernando Arrabal’s film work Iré como un caballo loco. Beyond his acknowledged trajectory as a playwright, this unique work constructs -in a deep and structured way- a complex narrative, full of biographical, literary and media referents, beyond the mere appearance of chaos, confusion and absurdity. The intertextuality of its narrative structure forces a qualitative and interdisciplinary analysis to reach the most hidden and unsuspected aspects of the film, where nothing is accidental. Among the main contributions are a narrative and structural duality that connects both with Aeschylus and also with journey and road movies. (shrink)

The biggest contemporary challenge to democratic legitimacy gravitates around the crisis of democratic representation.

In the modern age a specific lexicon has arisen to defend liberty and equality. This vocabulary has also been employed to defend misogynist positions and to justify the inequality between women and men. One clear example is Rousseau’s explanation of the sexual division of labour: women “naturally” decide to remain at home and look after the children while the men search for the resources necessary for the group. In this manner he intends to explain the relegation of women to the (...) private and domestic sphere. In the twentieth century this division entered in crisis due to the critical work of many feminist thinkers and groups. Among these Betty Friedan, Kate Millett and the Radicalesbians stand out. Their analyses put in question this division of spheres, their limits, their nature and their acceptance in society. Moreover they show the political scope and the power which underlies this division of labour, as well as the liberating possibilities resulting from the criticism of and the disobedience to the same. Betty Friedan denounces the social obstacles faced by women who wish to work outside the home and highlights the devastating consequences for the female psyche. Kate Millett puts in evidence the political system which oppresses women and how it colonises personal and intimate spaces. The Radicalesbians group underlines the freedom realised by woman-identified women. These feminists offer open and rich interpretations which are relevant in the present. (shrink)

When organized into functional categories, the set of texts found in the Ugaritic archive in the “Maison du prêtre-magicien” manifests a clear raison d’être as a collection. Of the twelve main categories of texts from this deposit, the most significant serve to justify various forms of magical praxis and detail how to carry them out. Almost the entire collection of Ugaritic offering texts is found here, since all include a purification rite of the king, the responsibility of the magician priest (...) as mḥll, whose function is stated in KTU 1.119. This fact had been ignored up to now. In addition, the main texts setting out the royal ideology were entrusted to this magician priest, thus reflecting their magical-cultic nature. Additional texts belong to the realm of scribal training, another responsibility of this public official. The adjacent library with a wide variety of Akkadian texts was of fundamental value in this latter connection. (shrink)

Esta experiencia describe las conclusiones extraídas de la realización de un taller de cortometraje como método terapéutico para trabajar habilidades de empoderamiento y de expresión emocional con un grupo de personas con enfermedad mental, usuarias de un centro de día. La finalización del taller culmina con un video fórum y la grabación de un video para un certamen anual de cortos sobre salud mental. Para la evaluación del taller se utilizó un proceso metodológico de carácter cualitativo basado en el grupo (...) de discusión. La mayoría destacó las experiencias positivas resultantes del programa y los efectos positivos, sobre todo a nivel creativo y emocional. (shrink)
