    Philosophy and Politics, II.Victor Gourevitch - 1968 - Review of Metaphysics 22 (2):281 - 328.
Sometimes Strauss argues as if he thought it possible to understand man without raising questions about his relations to other things, and hence about his place in the whole. But when they are viewed in their broader context, such arguments are seen not to be his final word. Man's humanity cannot be understood in its own terms alone. The human soul differs from everything else in that it is "... open to the whole and therefore more akin to the whole (...)

    Philosophy and Politics, I.Victor Gourevitch - 1968 - Review of Metaphysics 22 (1):58 - 84.
On the face of it, On Tyranny is a straightforward commentary on Xenophon's dialogue Hiero or Tyrannicus. As such it is a very model of thoroughness and learning. It amply repays careful study, and it goes a long way toward explaining Strauss's influence in training a generation of scholars. The dialogue proper takes up just under 20 pages. Its analysis runs to 90-odd pages, followed by another 30 pages of tightly packed notes that are largely devoted to parallels between the (...)

On Tyranny: Corrected and Expanded Edition, Including the Strauss-Kojève Correspondence.Victor Gourevitch & Michael S. Roth (eds.) - 2013 - University of Chicago Press.
_On Tyranny_ is Leo Strauss’s classic reading of Xenophon’s dialogue _Hiero_, or _Tyrannicus_, in which the tyrant Hiero and the poet Simonides discuss the advantages and disadvantages of exercising tyranny. Included are a translation of the dialogue from its original Greek, a critique of Strauss’s commentary by the French philosopher Alexandre Kojève, and the complete correspondence between the two. This revised and expanded edition introduces important corrections throughout and expands Strauss’s restatement of his position in light of Kojève’s commentary to (...)

A Theory of Justice elaborates and, in important respects, qualifies the views Rawls had been developing for two decades in a series of influential articles. It has been widely acclaimed as the most comprehensive and searching study of justice in a very long time, and it certainly is one of the rare works dealing seriously with a fundamental problem of general interest to be accorded the immediate and respectful attention it deserves. A considerable literature about many aspects of the theory (...)
