    Temporal justification of M. Heidegger’s ontological differentiation: simultaneity.Varvara Oleinik - 2020 - Sotsium I Vlast 3:30-39.
Introduction. The article considers the ontological difference as a fundamental idea dividing M. Heidegger’s ontology into two levels. The author proposes an explication of temporal foundations for the main principle of fundamental ontology, the ontological difference, on the basis of existential analytics of Dasein. It is assumed that the organization of Dasein is a micromodel of being in general, which is the ultimate goal of M. Heidegger’s philosophical work. The aim of the study is to explicate the phenomenon of simultaneity (...)

Conflict(s) of Interest in Peer Review: Its Origins and Possible Solutions.Anton Oleinik - 2013 - Science and Engineering Ethics (1):1-21.
Scientific communication takes place at two registers: first, interactions with colleagues in close proximity—members of a network, school of thought or circle; second, depersonalised transactions among a potentially unlimited number of scholars can be involved (e.g., author and readers). The interference between the two registers in the process of peer review produces a drift toward conflict of interest. Three particular cases of peer review are differentiated: journal submissions, grant applications and applications for tenure. The current conflict of interest policies do (...)

The Formation of a New Confucianism in the 40s of the XX Century in the Framework of the Discussion of "Westernizers" and Post-Confucians.Varvara I. Chernykh - 2022 - RUDN Journal of Philosophy 26 (1):166-177.
The article is devoted to the review of the most significant provisions of philosophical thought in China, starting from the XIX century and up to the 40s of the XX century. The author examines the views of both Western and Chinese intellectuals who have contributed to the formation of the new or modern Confucianism main issues. One of the most important aspect is the influence of historical events that have occurred since the XIX century. For example, the two Opium Wars (...)

Online privacy: Explaining the nature and special features of the right to seek protection.Varvara Z. Mitliaga - 2004 - Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society 2 (3):159-167.
This article attempts to explain and analyse the nature and characteristic features of a person’s privacy in the on‐line environment in order to assess how these features shape the need for protection. Since the internet has invaded our everyday lives, individual privacy is exposed in different ways in cyberspace. It is important to note that the Internet lacks the traditional characteristics of a ‘physical’ space, but the interests and inherent values protected by privacy remain the same in cyberspace. The article (...)

Inquiring into Communication in Science: Alternative Approaches.Anton Oleinik - 2009 - Science in Context 22 (4):613-646.
ArgumentThis article focuses on a problematic character of communication in science. Two solutions are compared: paradigm-based science and the semiotic solution developed in the arts and social sciences. There are several parallels between the latter approach and Marxist dialectics. A third, original, approach to solving communication problems is proposed; it can be labeled “transactional.” It represents a version of the semiotic solution with particular emphasis on interactions, both face-to-face and depersonalized, and the imperative of negotiating and finding compromises. Communication problems (...)

On Negative Convergence: The Metaphor of Vodka-Cola Reconsidered.Anton Oleinik - 2008 - Telos: Critical Theory of the Contemporary 2008 (145):31-46.
The process of lowering and removing barriers to the flow of ideas, people, capital, goods, and services at the global level has been presented by many liberal thinkers as a way of opening economies and societies. Neoclassical economists argue that markets, for instance, are potentially boundless: the less external constraints and restrictions, the more smoothly and efficiently they function. Trends toward increasing the intensity of exchanges at the supra-national level, conventionally called globalization, have had nonlinear dynamics. It has taken several (...)

What are neural networks not good at? On artificial creativity.Anton Oleinik - 2019 - Big Data and Society 6 (1).
This article discusses three dimensions of creativity: metaphorical thinking; social interaction; and going beyond extrapolation in predictions. An overview of applications of neural networks in these three areas is offered. It is argued that the current reliance on the apparatus of statistical regression limits the scope of possibilities for neural networks in general, and in moving towards artificial creativity in particular. Artificial creativity may require revising some foundational principles on which neural networks are currently built.

Space and Time as A Priori Forms in the Works of Hermann Cohen and Ivan Lapshin.Vyacheslav I. Savintsev & Varvara S. Popova - 2022 - Kantian Journal 41 (4):94-121.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the need to rethink the status of space and time which Kant considered to be a priori forms of sensibility was prompted by the emergence of new approaches to the methodology of scientific cognition. In neo-Kantian interpretation these cognitive forms acquire a special epistemological status, manifesting themselves in theoretical research as “pre-given” foundations of knowledge. It seems necessary to conduct a comparative analysis of two interconnected neo-Kantian concepts, of Hermann Cohen and Ivan (...)

    L’entre-deux de la transition professionnelle : quelle posture de l’accompagnement?Varvara Ciobanu-Gout - 2024 - Revue Phronesis 13 (1):173-187.
Against a backdrop of transformations in the employment market, career changes are on the rise. This paper explores the subject’s experience of this transition, seen as an « in-between » situation. It highlights the need for support during this transition. The professional position adopted by support workers who use the biographical narrative is presented here as that of a craftsman, working alongside the person receiving support to construct the meaning of their life story.

Socrates the judge: a not-so-platonizing dialogue on the deposition of patriarch Nicholas IV Mouzalon.Lev Lukhovitskiy & Varvara Zharkaya - 2020 - Byzantinische Zeitschrift 113 (1):219-248.
The article brings under scrutiny an understudied dialogical account about the deposition of the patriarch of Constantinople Nicholas IV Mouzalon (1147-51). A close reading shows that this is not an official record of the proceedings but a piece of fiction that deliberately inverts the generic conventions of the two types of texts indicative of the 12th-century literary landscape, namely 1) minutes of church councils and 2) syllogistic theological dialogues. The anonymous author invites the reader to recognize the all-familiar scheme of (...)

The Overlooked Tradition of “Personal Music” and Its Place in the Evolution of Music.Aleksey Nikolsky, Eduard Alekseyev, Ivan Alekseev & Varvara Dyakonova - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 10:469843.
This is an attempt to describe and explain so-called timbre-based music as a special system of musicking, communication, and psychological and social usage, which along with its corresponding beliefs constitutes a viable alternative to “frequency-based” music. Unfortunately, the current scientific research into music has been skewed almost entirely in favor of the frequency-based music prevalent in the West. Subsequently, whenever samples of timbre-based music attract the attention of Western researchers, these are usually interpreted as “defective” implementations of frequency-based music. The (...)

The Birth of a Philosopher (Review on N.A. Gromova’s “Otherworldly Friend. The Love Story of Lev Shestov and Varvara Malahieva-Mirovich in Letters and Documents”. Moscow: AST Publishing House: Edited by Elena Shubina, 2021. 413 p.). [REVIEW]К.В Ворожихина - 2022 - History of Philosophy 27 (2):131-136.
The review is devoted to a new book by the writer and literary historian Natalia A. Gromova, in which, on the basis of letters and archival documents, the love story of Varvara Malahieva-Mirovich and Lev Shestov is reconstructed. According to Gromova, their relationship became an impulse that had a key influence on the formation of Shestov as an existential thinker, whose philosophy is not based on speculative contemplation, but is inextricably linked with life experience. Shestov’s philosophy of tragedy grows (...)

The article deals with the history of Russian Spinozism in the20th century, focusing attention on three interpretations of Spinoza's philosophy – by Varvara Polovtsova, Lev Vygotsky, and Evald Ilyenkov. Polovtsova profoundly explored Spinoza'slogical method and contributed an excellent translation of histreatise De intellectus emendatione. Later Vygotsky andIlyenkov applied Spinoza's method to create activity theory,an explanation of the laws and genesis of the human mind.
