This book reprints an ancient Chinese work from the late Warring States period (3rd century BC) that contains stories and anecdotes exemplifying the carefree nature of the ideal Taoist sage. Chuang Tzu's philosophy represents the main current of Taoist teachings, and his text is widely regarded as both deeply insightful and a great achievement in the Chinese poetical essay form. The version presented was translated by Feng Yu-lan, the famous Chinese philosopher, who puts more emphasis on Chuang Tzu's (...) philosophy than do previous attempts. William James once said that every great philosopher has a personal vision. When one has grasped that vision, the whole system can be easily understood. And Crocé once said that the greater a philosophical system is, the simpler the central idea. Although the present translation is limited to the first seven chapters of Chuang Tzu's writings, it accurately conveys his main vision and ideas. (shrink)

풍우란(馮友蘭: 펑유란, 1895-1990)은 현대를 대표하는 중국철학사가이다. 이 글은 풍우란의 이름으로 발간된 『중국철학사』, 『중국철학간사』, 『중국철학사신편』이라는 세 편의 『중국철학사』에 나타난 노장해석의 관점에 초점을 맞추어 그 중심 내용과 해석상의 전변의 문제에 관하여 검토한 것이다. 따라서 이 글은 선진도가의 철학자 중에서 특히 노자와 장자의 철학사상에 대한 풍우란의 기본입장을 검토한 의의가 있다.BR 먼저 풍우란의 노자해석에서 주목을 끄는 것은 노자와 공자의 시대적 선후문제에 관하여 노자보다 공자를 앞선 인물로 평가한 점이다. 그리고 서양철학의 세례를 충분히 받았던 풍우란이었던 만큼 노자를 해석하는데 있어서도 서양철학의 해석방식을 원용하여 노자철학을 해석한 특징이 눈에 (...) 띈다. 이러한 해석의 방식은 본체론과 우주론의 경계에서 고민했던 풍우란의 입장을 확인시켜주는 계기가 되기도 한다.BR 풍우란의 장자해석에도 서양철학적 사유의 흔적은 역력하다. 그는 장자의 소요유(逍遙遊)의 의미를 행복(happiness)이라고 규정하면서, 스피노자의 사상을 원용한다. 또한 중국철학 내부적으로는 곽상의 주석을 통해 장자를 해석한다. 이러한 두 가지 장자해석의 관점은 나름의 의의가 있지만, 역시 일정 정도의 한계를 갖는다.BR 그런데 풍우란은 자신의 후기사상을 대변하는 『중국철학사신편』을 발표하면서 이전에 발표한 자신의 『중국철학사』의 기술과 해석의 방식을 크게 벗어난다. 『중국철학사신편』을 통하여 풍우란은 유물론의 입장에서 노장을 비판적으로 해석하는 새로운 사유의 전변을 보여준 것이다. 그러나 이러한 사상적 전변의 문제는 긍정적인 전변이라고 볼 수 없다는 것이 가장 큰 문제이다. 이 글은 이와 같은 문제들을 비판적으로 검토해보고자 한 것이며, 풍우란 노장관의 의의와 한계를 함께 구명해보고자 한 목적이 있다. It is the first full-length work of its kind which argues that a deep level cognitive structure exists beneath an otherwise random collection of literary anecdotes, cryptic sayings, and dark allusions. The author carefully analyzes myths, legends, monstrous characters, paradoxes, parables and linguistic puzzles as strategically placed techniques for systematically tapping and channeling the spiritual dimensions of the mind. Allinson takes issue with commentators who have treated the Chuang-Tzu as a minor foray into relativism. Chapter titles are re-translated, textual fragments are relocated, and inauthentic, outer miscellaneous chapters are carefully separated from the transformatory message of the authentic, inner chapters. Each of the inner chapters is shown to be a building block to the next so that they can only be understood as forming a developmental sequence. The common understanding of Chuang-Tzu as one of the earliest deconstructionists is only half true. This article sets out to challenge conventional characterizations of Chuang-Tzu by adding the important caveat that not only is he a philosophical deconstructionist but that his writings also reveal a non-relativistic, transcendental basis to understanding. The road to such understanding, as argued by this author, can be found in Chuang-Tzu’s emphasis on the illusory or dream-like nature of the self and, by extension, (...) the subject-object dichotomy inherent in all forms of conceptualization and descriptive language. These two obstacles to true understanding - the self and literal, linguistic expressions - are overcome in the Chuang-Tzu by implementing metaphorical and poetic language, such as the Kun-Peng myth, the swamp pheasant parable, the introduction of physically deformed interlocutors, various dream analogies, and so forth. By employing such literary devices in a comprehensible and non-mystical manner, this article concludes that Chuang-Tzu successfully communicates his essential wisdom by guiding the reader to a higher state of spiritual awareness, a state in which one transcends the self, language, conceptual paradoxes, and even the idea of transcendence itself. Consequently, through the following explication of Chuang-Tzu’s complementary emphasis on both preventing mental rigidity and promoting spiritual transcendence, this article seeks to earn Chuang-Tzu the reputation of a deconstructionist with a difference. Chuang Tzu was to Lao Tzu, the author of Tao Tê Ching, as Hui-neng, the sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, was to Bodhidharma, and in some respects St.Paul to Jesus; he expanded the original teaching into a system and was thus the founder of Tao-ism. Whereas Lao Tzu was a contemporary of Confucius in the sixth century B.C, Chuang Tzu lived over two hundred years later. He (...) was one of the greatest minds produced by China; philosopher, metaphysician, moralist and poet. It is impossible to understand the spiritual depth of the Tao Tê Ching without the aid of Chuang Tzu. (shrink)

Hui Tzu said to Chuang Tzu, “. . .Your words ... are too big and useless, and so everyone alike spurns them!”Chuang Tzu said, “Maybe you’ve never seen a wildcat or a weasel. It crouches down and hides, watching for something to come along. It leaps and races east and west, not hesitating to go high or low—until it falls into the trap and dies in the net. Then again there’s the yak, big as a cloud covering the (...) sky. It certainly knows how to be big, though it doesn’t know how to catch rats.” 1 One could perhaps understand, if not empathize with, Hui Tzu’s impatience in the dialogue above. Resumo: Chuang Tzu (《庄子》), como um cânone tradicional chinês, foi traduzido para o inglês por mais de 100 anos, desde 1881, conquistando com sucesso um nicho no reino da literatura mundial, que se tornou um evento cultural devastador na academia de sinologia ultramarina e literatura mundial. Segundo as estatísticas, o livro foi traduzido em 12 traduções completas, 50 traduções selecionadas e duas adaptações. No processo de metamorfose da “tradução completa - tradução profunda - retradução diversificada”, passou por quatro fases, (...) nomeadamente fases religiosas, literárias, filosóficas e reinterpretações diversificadas. Assim, na perspectiva da visão de Damrosch a respeito da literatura mundial, o artigo resume as características de diferentes estágios, com base em diferentes contextos espaço-temporais. À luz da forma tradutória, dos resultados tradutórios e do modo de leitura tradutória, especifica-se o caminho pelo qual Chuang Tzu entrou no campo da literatura mundial, para apreender o mecanismo operacional de promoção da literatura nacional à literatura mundial, que se dedica ao esclarecimento para o trabalho prático de tradução da introdução da literatura chinesa no exterior. Enquanto isso, revisando a história das traduções inglesas de Chuang Tzu, o artigo resume as deficiências das atuais atividades de tradução e pesquisa, com a tentativa de fornecer sugestões construtivas, bem como apontar a direção para o desenvolvimento futuro de estudos de Chuang Tzu no exterior. The early Wittgentein talked a lot about what is the mystical and hinted that these are the most important things for him. But it is anything but an easy task to make sense of his talks on this subject. And some commentators even claim that it is impossible to do this. It shall be shown that we could understand the early Wittgenstein better if we had some knowledge of the thought of Chuang Tzu, a leading classical Chinese Taoist philosopher. (...) For both of them were to solve the problems of life. And they offered the very same solution to them: to accept unconditionally everything which happens to one and in this way to become one with the world as a whole. The rest of the text is often understood to contain fragments of material, some of which are sometimes attributed to the same author as the Inner Chapters, some of which are attributed to other authors, including representatives of the Yangzhu (Yang Chu) tradition. 본 논문은 장자에서의 심(心), 성(性), 정(情)으로 나타나는 심성론 및 심성론의 의미와 구조를 통해 확보될 수 있는 이상적 인간에 대해 밝히고자 하였다. 세계와 우주 앞에 선 인간의 문제란 결국은 자아에 대한 자각으로 귀결된다는 전제하에 자아란 결국 자신의 마음과 몸을 떠나 상정하기 어려운 것이라 보았다. 그러므로 자아의 중심구조로서의 심(心), 성(性), 정(情), 및 몸[形]의 관계가 장자에서 어떻게 나타나는지 밝히고자 한 것이다.BR 장자가 인간이해의 근간으로서 제시한 심성관계는 『내편』에서는 심(心)을 중심으로 이루어졌다. 또한 심은 진재(眞宰)로서의 심(心)과 시비 · 희노애락의 정(情)에 의해 영향 받는 심(心)이라는 이중구조를 지닌다. (...) 또한 장자는 성(性)에 대해 자연성[天]으로 덕에 합치하는 의미 및 『외편』 · 『잡편』에서의 성(性)의 의미로서는 ‘본성을 닦는다’는 의미도 사용하였다. 그러므로 성(性)에는 닦아야 할 대상으로서의 부정적인 의미가 포함되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 것은 장자가 정(情)을 어떻게 보느냐와 연관이 있다. 정(情)은 사물이나 자연의 실정 및 사람이 느끼는 정서 · 감정으로서의 인정(人情)으로서 사용되었고, 인정에는 시비·희노애락에 의한 유정(有情)과 시비·희노애락에 좌우되지 않는 무정(無情)의 이중적 의미의 정(情)이 사용되었음을 알 수 있다. 또한 정(情)은 인간이 몸을 지니고 태어났다는 사실에서 비롯되는 천성이다. 이러한 유정 · 무정은 심(心)에 상존하고 있으며, 장자는 진인(眞人)을 통해 무정의 존재를 드러낸 것이다. 결국 시비·희노애락에 의한 정(情) 및 인간의 몸[形]의 구속에 대한 벗어남이 심(心)의 본성으로서의 덕(德) 체득에 필수적인 것이다.BR 장자는 정(情)과 몸[形]의 제약으로부터 벗어남을 통해 인간은 오히려 자유로움을 지닌 도덕인이 될 수 있다고 보았다. 즉, 삶의 내외적 제약을 넘어서서 즐길[樂] 줄 아는 인간을 무하유지향에서 소요하는 인간으로 보여주었다. 결국 시비·희노애락의 유정(有情)은 참된 지식의 확보라는 점에서 방해되는 요소로 작용하고, 이러한 정(情)의 측면이 오히려 정신(精神)과의 관계 속에서 이해될 때 무정(無情)의 심성이라는 진인의 단계가 가능한 것이다. "Chuang Tzu" means "Master Chuang". If we are to believe traditional accounts (like those in the Records of the Historian , by Ssu-ma Ch'ian), he lived in the fourth century BC, contemporary with Plato and Aristotle. He was from a place called Meng, probably in the state of Sung, where he was "an official in the lacquer garden"; nobody knows what that means. Chuang Chou is also recorded as being a member of the Chi-Hsia academy maintained by (...) the larger and more advanced state of Ch'i, along with many of his most famous philosophical contemporaries, like Mencius and Hui Shih. And that is about it, so far as Chuang Chou goes. (shrink)

이 글은 장자가 주목한 칼의 철학과 이상적 인간상이란 주제를 논의의 축으로 삼아 현대 중국의 최고작가로 평가받는 진융(金庸, 1924-2018)의 작품 소설 영웅문 의 일부를영화화한 (倚天屠龍記, Kung Fu Master, 1993)의 철학적 의의를 구명해본것이다. 이 글에서는 형식상 축약될 수밖에 없는 영화의 한계를 감안하여 원작소설의 내용을 필요에 따라 원용하여 보완해가면서 논의를 전개하였다. 그 결과 영화의 중심소재이기도 한 의천검과 도룡도라는 칼에 담겨진 철학적 의의가 장자철학과 밀접하게 연계되어 있음을 확인하였다. 특히 장자는 살상무기로써 전쟁의 도구가 되는 칼의 존재에 대해 주목한바 있는데, 는 이와 같은 장자의 철학정신을 잘 (...) 반영하여 창조적으로 승화시켰다. 장자는 자연의 이법을 벗어난 칼의 활용은 반자연한 것이며, 어떠한 경우라도 자기욕망의 대상으로 그것을 외물화해서는 안 된다고 강조한다. 또한 칼을 운용하는 주체 역시고착된 일인칭적 자아로부터 해방되지 않으면 안 되며, 타자를 강제적으로 간섭하거나 지배하려고 해서도 안 된다는 입장이다. 장자는 이러한 이상적 인간상을 가리켜 무기 (無己) 라고 제시하였는데, 영화의 주인공은 장자의 이상적 인간상에서 특히 마음의 철학을 특화한 무기 (無忌)라는 이름으로 등장한다. 이 둘의 개념은 동일한 철학정신에 기반을 두고있다는 것이 이 글의 입장이다. 이 글은 특히 이와 같은 문제의식을 무장해제의 철학정신에서 확인하고자 한 의의가 있다. Accepting the challenge of translating this captivating classic in its entirety, Burton Watson has expertly rendered into English both the profound thought and the literary brilliance of the text.

Where Western philosophy ends, with the limits of language, marks the beginning of Eastern philosophy. The Tao de jing of Laozi begins with the limitations of language and then proceeds from that as a starting point. On the other hand, the limitation of language marks the end of Wittgenstein's cogitations. In contrast to Wittgenstein, who thought that one should remain silent about that which cannot be put into words, the message of the Zhuangzi is that one can speak about that (...) which cannot put into words but the speech will be strange and indirect. Through the focus on the monstrous character, No-Lips in the Zhuangzi, this paper argues that a key message of the Zhuangzi is that the art of transcending language in the Zhuangzi is through the use of crippled speech. The metaphor of crippled speech, speech which is actually unheard, illustrates that philosophical truths cannot be put into words but can be indirectly signified through the art of stretching language beyond its normal contours. This allows Eastern philosophy, through the philosophy of the Zhuangzi to transcend the limits of language. (shrink)

If we peruse the Chuang Tzu (Zhuangzi) and the Nietzschean corpus, we will find numerous examples of evaluative statements. And yet, both Chuang Tzu and Nietzsche are well known for their critique of conventional value distinctions. Time and again they argue that our conventional value distinctions are invalid and sometimes even harmful. Are these two philosophers justified in making what appear to be self-negating claims? This essay offers a line of argument to justify their employment of evaluative language (...) while at the same time disclaiming its validity. My essential argument is that there are two levels of consciousness in both of these philosophers and that evaluative language is transcended at one of these levels but still possesses limited validity at the other. I assume, I believe correctly, that the purpose of philosophy for both philosophers is self-transformation. Given this functional direction of philosophizing, I divide the types of statements I will analyze into three standpoints: (1) “evaluative standpoint,” or statements which I take to be primarily evaluative in nature. “Class i” refers to the evaluative standpoint which is the standpoint not yet transcended and to be transcended; (2) “transevaluative standpoint”, or statements which I take to be primarily transevaluative in nature. “Class ii” refers to the transevaluative standpoint which is the standpoint to be achieved; (3) “transevaluative resultant values,” or statements which are primarily statements of the resultant value which are the product of a value free standpoint. “Class iii” refers to the resultant concrete values which are the product of following the transevaluative standpoint. My analyses lead to the conclusion that evaluative language is employed in its appropriate level of consciousness and transcended in the other level. In short, I propose that Chuang Tzu and Nietzsche can have their cake, and eat it, too. (shrink)

매월당 김시습은 조선조를 대표하는 학자로서 수양대군의 왕위찬탈 사건의 불의함을 보 고 당시의 현실에 항거하여 은둔과 유랑의 삶을 선택한 생육신 가운데 한 명이다. 이 글은 매월당의 유불도 삼가사상 가운데 도가사상에 초점을 맞춰 그의 학문관을 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 이 글은 특히 매월당이 본 장자관의 기본입장이 무엇인지 살펴보는 것이 목표이다. 매월당은 자신의 시대가 장자가 언급한 인간세와 같다고 규정한다. 인간세란 기본적으 로 인간이 살아가는 세상을 가리킨다. 그러나 장자는 특히 정치적 혼란의 상황으로 야기된 난세를 지칭하여 인간세라고 규정한다. 매월당은 이러한 장자의 사상을 계승하여 자신의 시대를 인간세라고 (...) 규정한 후 그 위에서 펼쳐지는 갖가지 병폐들을 지적하면서 이에 대한 반성을 촉구한다. 여기서 대안으로 제시되는 것이 장자적 의미의 자연세계를 대변하는 도 교적 천상의 세계이며, 신선에로의 변화 가능성을 꿈꾸어보는 것이었다. 매월당은 인간세의 한계를 극복하는 방편으로써 인간세의 가치 덕목이라 할 수 있는 외 물에 대한 부정적인 태도와 이를 통한 거리두기의 입장을 취한다. 매월당은 외물에 대한 거리두기 차원에서 장자의 좌망에 주목하고 무사, 무려와 같은 무심의 마음상태를 간직해 야 함을 강조한다. 이러한 맥락에서 매월당은 방내인의 삶의 한계를 비판함과 동시에 방외 인의 삶이 가지고 있는 철학적 의의에 대해 주목하기도 한다. 그가 방내인이 이해하기에 곤란한 미친 행동을 보인 것이라던가, 평생 졸박한 삶의 태도로 일관한 것, 그리고 자기 자신을 가리켜 기형아와 같은 사람이라고 평가하면서 한 세상을 살아간 것은 매월당의 삶 의 자취가 장자철학과 밀접하게 연관된 방외인의 삶 그 자체였음을 알려준다.
