Democratic legitimacy is rarely associated with private governance. After all, private actors are not legitimized through elections by a demos. Instead of abandoning democratic principles when entering the private sphere of governance, however, this article argues in favour of employing alternative criteria of democracy in assessments. Specifically, this article uses the criteria of participation, transparency and accountability to evaluate the democratic legitimacy of private food retail governance institutions. It pursues this evaluation of the democratic legitimacy of these institutions against the (...) background of their ambivalent impact on the sustainability of the global agrifood system. According to an influential conception of reasons for action, the presence of a desire or some other conative state in the agent is a necessary condition for the agent’s havinga reason for action. This is sometimes known as internalism . In this paper I present a case for the considerably stronger thesis, which I call hyper-internalism , that the presence of a desire is a sufficient condition for the agent’s having a ( prima facie )reason for action.

Este artigo argumenta em favor do uso de textos extraídos de obras filosóficasoriginais com alunos de ensino médio. Apesar das críticas que esta propostatem recebido, e sem ignorar as dificuldades que dela advêm, procura-semostrar a necessidade de se ter como aspecto central das aulas a leitura einterpretação de fragmentos retirados de obras de filósofos. This article argues for the use of texts from philosophical works with highschool students.
