You Ought to Know Better: the Morality of Political Engagement.Siwing Tsoi - 2018 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 21 (2):329-339.
I argue that, from the liberal perspective, citizens have a pro tanto moral duty to cultivate and maintain a readiness to participate in politics when such an action is called for from the moral perspective—I will call it “the pro tanto duty of political engagement.” It requires a citizen to monitor what the government is doing, evaluate its actions, and learn what she can do to intervene politically. In Section 1, I will discuss some doubts on the pro tanto duty (...)

    Scientific dishonesty--questionnaire to doctoral students in Sweden.T. Nilstun, R. Lofmark & A. Lundqvist - 2010 - Journal of Medical Ethics 36 (5):315-318.
‘Scientific dishonesty’ implies the fabrication, falsification or plagiarism in proposing, performing or reviewing research or in reporting research results. A questionnaire was given to postgraduate students at the medical faculties in Sweden who attended a course in research ethics during the academic year 2008/2009 and 58% answered (range 29%–100%). Less than one-third of the respondents wrote that they had heard about scientific dishonesty in the previous 12 months. Pressure, concerning in what order the author should be mentioned, was reported by (...)

Human Dignity in Paediatrics: The Effects of Health Care.Anita Lundqvist & Tore Nilstun - 2007 - Nursing Ethics 14 (2):215-228.
Human dignity is grounded in basic human attributes such as life and self-respect. When people cannot stand up for themselves they may lose their dignity towards themselves and others. The aim of this study was to elucidate if dignity remains intact for family members during care procedures in a children’s hospital. A qualitative approach was adopted, using open non-participation observation. The findings indicate that dignity remains intact in family-centred care where all concerned parties encourage each other in a collaborative relationship. (...)

    Mozi’s Ideal Political Philosophy.A. P. Martinich & Siwing Tsoi - 2015 - Asian Philosophy 25 (3):253-274.
The main purpose of this article is to show that the essence of Mozi’s political theory, namely that a civil state is in its best or ideal condition when each citizen exercises universal care, is more defensible than it is usually thought to be. Doing this will require an exposition of the main features of his theory and occasionally reference arguments and considerations outside of Mozi’s text. We interpret the disagreement between Mozi and his alleged Confucian opponents as a disagreement (...)

    A Green Fist in a Velvet Glove: The Ecological State and Sustainable Development.Lennart J. Lundqvist - 2001 - Environmental Values 10 (4):455-472.
Suggestions for transforming ecological sustainability into operative social choice mechanisms can be viewed through the bifocal lens of limits on, and opportunities for, the ecological state. Using lines of reasoning brought in from the comparative study of environmental policy, this article tries to stake out how far the ecological state can go in pursuing objectives of sustainable development without intruding on values and objectives fundamental to democracy. The article discusses social choice mechanisms in terms of the ecological state's authority, management (...)

    Noddings's caring ethics theory applied in a paediatric setting.Anita Lundqvist & Tore Nilstun - 2009 - Nursing Philosophy 10 (2):113-123.
Since the 1990s, numerous studies on the relationship between parents and their children have been reported on in the literature and implemented as a philosophy of care in most paediatric units. The purpose of this article is to understand the process of nurses' care for children in a paediatric setting by using Noddings's caring ethics theory. Noddings's theory is in part described from a theoretical perspective outlining the basic idea of the theory followed by a critique of her work. Important (...)

Cancer survivors' perception of participation in a long-term follow-up study.Gail Dunberger, Helena Thulin, Ann-Charlotte Waldenström, Helena Lind, Lars Henningsohn, Elisabeth Åvall-Lundqvist, Gunnar Steineck & Ulrika Kreicbergs - 2013 - Journal of Medical Ethics 39 (1):41-45.
Every year medical researchers make contact with a large number of cancer survivors with the aim of evaluating cancer treatment. For this reason we decided to investigate how Swedish cancer survivors perceived their participation in research studies focusing on the long-term consequences of being a survivor of gynaecological or urinary bladder cancer. Data were collected by means of two study-specific postal questionnaires, both consisting of questions covering physical symptoms, well-being and the experience of being a cancer survivor. Both questionnaires also (...)

Reading or scanning? A study of newspaper and net paper reading.Kenneth Holmqvist, Jana Holsanova, Maria Barthelson & Daniel Lundqvist - 2003 - In H. Deubel & J. R. In Hyönä (eds.), The Mind’s Eye: Cognitive and Applied Aspects of Eye Movement Research. pp. 657 - 670.
Net paper readers have been shown to read deeper into articles than newspaper readers. It has also been claimed that newspaper readers rather scan than read newspapers. Do these findings mean that net paper readers read proportionally more than newspaper readers? This paper presents results showing that in fact net paper readers scan more and read less than newspaper readers. We furthermore investigate whether this result can be expained by the difference in layout, navigation structure and purpose of reading between (...)

  31. Holistic Engineering Ethics?Eddie Conlon, Diana Adela Martin & Brian Bowe - 2018 - Proceedings of the Engineering Education for Sustainable Development Conference.
This paper focuses on the question of What kind of engineering ethics (EE) is needed to develop holistic engineers who can practice and promote the principles of sustainable development? -/- It is argued that, given the existence of other models, an approach to EE, as argued for at EESD 2016, centred on “training engineers for handling ethical dilemmas in sustainability contexts” (Lundqvist and Svanstrom 2016) is inadequate to address the sustainability challenge facing engineers.. We contend that while EE is (...)

環境音を対象とした擬音語自動認識 擬音語表現における音素決定あい昧性の解消.駒谷 和範 石原 一志 - 2005 - Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence 20:229-236.
Environmental sounds are very helpful in understanding environmental situations and in telling the approach of danger, and sound-imitation words are important expressions to inform such sounds in human communication, especially in Japanese language. In this paper, we design a method to recognize sound-imitation words for environmental sounds. Critical issues in recognizing SIW are how to divide an environmental sound into recognition units and how to resolve representation ambiguity of the sounds. To solve these problems, we designed three-stage procedure that transforms (...)
