Changes in Social Network Size Are Associated With Cognitive Changes in the Oldest-Old.Susanne Röhr, Margrit Löbner, Uta Gühne, Kathrin Heser, Luca Kleineidam, Michael Pentzek, Angela Fuchs, Marion Eisele, Hanna Kaduszkiewicz, Hans-Helmut König, Christian Brettschneider, Birgitt Wiese, Silke Mamone, Siegfried Weyerer, Jochen Werle, Horst Bickel, Dagmar Weeg, Wolfgang Maier, Martin Scherer, Michael Wagner & Steffi G. Riedel-Heller - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychiatry 2020.
Objectives:Social isolation is increasing in aging societies and several studies have shown a relation with worse cognition in old age. However, less is known about the association in the oldest-old (85+); the group that is at highest risk for both social isolation and dementia. Methods:Analyses were based on follow-up 5 to 9 of the longitudinal German study on aging, cognition, and dementia in primary care patients (AgeCoDe) and the study on needs, health service use, costs, and health-related quality of life (...)

The Role of Social Isolation and the Development of Depression: A Comparison of the Widowed and Married Oldest Old in Germany.Franziska Förster, Melanie Luppa, Alexander Pabst, Kathrin Heser, Luca Kleineidam, Angela Fuchs, Michael Pentzek, Hanna Kaduszkiewicz, Carolin van der Leeden, André Hajek, Hans-Helmut König, Anke Oey, Birgitt Wiese, Edelgard Mösch, Dagmar Weeg, Siegfried Weyerer, Jochen Werle, Wolfgang Maier, Martin Scherer, Michael Wagner & Steffi G. Riedel-Heller - 2021 - International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health 18 (13):6986.
Widowhood is common in old age, can be accompanied by serious health consequences and is often linked to substantial changes in social network. Little is known about the impact of social isolation on the development of depressive symptoms over time taking widowhood into account. We provide results from the follow-up 5 to follow-up 9 from the longitudinal study AgeCoDe and its follow-up study AgeQualiDe. Depression was measured with GDS-15 and social isolation was assessed using the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS-6). (...)

The postmodern political condition.Agnes Heller - 1988 - Cambridge, UK: Polity Press in association with B. Blackwell. Edited by Ferenc Fehér.
The debate about the nature of modernity and postmodernity has become central to intellectual culture today. In this work, two distinguished social theorists make a distinctive contribution to this continuing discussion.

  16. Dispositional essentialism and the grounding of natural modality.Siegfried Jaag - 2014 - Philosophers' Imprint 14.
Dispositional essentialism is a non-Humean view about the essences of certain fundamental or natural properties that looms large in recent metaphysics , not least because it promises to explain neatly the natural modalities such as laws of nature, counterfactuals, causation and chance. In the current paper, however, several considerations are presented that indicate a serious tension between its essentialist core thesis and natural “metaphysical” interpretations of its central explanatory claims.

    A Theory of History.Ágnes Heller - 2018 - Routledge.
This radical analysis of the role and importance of historiography interprets the philosophy and theory of history on the basis of historicity as a human condition. The book examins the norms and methods of historiography from a philosophical point of view, but rejects generalisations tht the philosophy of history can provide all the answers to contemporary problems. Instead it outlines a feasible theory of history which is still radical enough to apply to all social structures.

The mad scientist meets the robot cats: Compatibilism, kinds, and counterexamples.Mark Heller - 1996 - Philosophy and Phenomenological Research 56 (2):333-37.
In 1962 Hilary Putnam forced us to face the possibility of robot cats. More than twenty years later Daniel Dennett found himself doing battle with mad scientists and other “bogeymen.” Though these two examples are employed in different philosophical arena, there is an important connection between them that has not been emphasized. Separating the concept associated with a kind term from the extension of that term, as Putnam and others have urged, raises the possibility of accepting counterexamples to compatibilistic analyses (...)

Potentialities: Collected Essays in Philosophy.Daniel Heller-Roazen (ed.) - 1999 - Stanford, Calif.: Stanford University Press.
This volume constitutes the largest collection of writings by the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben hitherto published in any language. With one exception, the fifteen essays, which reflect the wide range of the author’s interests, appear in English for the first time. The essays consider figures in the history of philosophy and twentieth-century thought. They also examine several general topics that have always been of central concern to Agamben: the relation of linguistic and metaphysical categories; messianism in Islamic, Jewish, and Christian (...)

Touch, Representation, and Blindness.Morton A. Heller (ed.) - 2000 - Oxford University Press UK.
Psychological studies of touch and blindness have been fraught with controversy. Within this field there remains an important theoretical divide. Many researchers have taken a cognitive approach to the study of touch and blindness, relating these to higher order processes, such as memory and concept formation. Others adopt a theoretical perspective, arguing that it not necessary to consider the 'internal representation' of the stimuli, when investigating touch - thus people make use of information from the physical biomechanical properties of their (...)

"Music is different" - isn't it?: Bedeutung und Bedingungen musikalischer Autonomie: Festschrift für Siegfried Oechsle zum 65. Geburtstag.Siegfried Oechsle, Kathrin Kirsch & Alexander Lotzow (eds.)

    A puzzle about laws and explanation.Siegfried Jaag - 2021 - Synthese 199 (3-4):6085-6102.
In this paper, we argue that the popular claim that laws of nature explain their instances creates a philosophical puzzle when it is combined with the widely held requirement that explanations need to be underpinned by ‘wordly’ relations. We argue that a “direct solution” to the puzzle that accounts for both explanatory laws and explanatory realism requires endorsing at least a radical metaphysics. Then, we examine the ramifications of a “skeptical solution”, i.e., dissolving it by giving up at least one (...)

Summary Young people differ widely in their sports behavior and show high drop-out rates from organized sports. One explanation from socialization theory refers to the transgenerational mediation of sports behavior and orientations toward sports within the family. The present study investigates the relevance of orientations toward sports and behavioral patterns within the family to young people’s sports behavior. Using methodological triangulation between multiple linear regression and qualitative interviews of young people between the ages of 15 and 20, the study investigates (...)
