    The Binding Problem for Strong Experiential Monism.Santtu Heikkinen - 2022 - Sophia 61 (4):795-809.
In this article, I explicate a new problem for a variant of panpsychism, strong experiential monism, that is the view that all being is experiential. I contrast the view with weak experiential monism, a softer variant that allows for non-experiential bare particulars to act as the carriers of properties. I argue that strong experiential monism can’t explain what works as the ontological commonality between the referents of one experience of something and another experience of that same thing; in other words, (...)

    Understanding Privacy in Occupational Health Services.Anne Heikkinen, Gustav Wickström & Helena Leino-Kilpi - 2006 - Nursing Ethics 13 (5):515-530.
The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of privacy in occupational health services. Data were collected through in-depth theme interviews with occupational health professionals (n=15), employees (n=15) and employers (n=14). Our findings indicate that privacy, in this context, is a complex and multilayered concept, and that companies as well as individual employees have their own core secrets. Co-operation between the three groups proved challenging: occupational health professionals have to consider carefully in which situations and how much (...)

Privacy and occupational health services.A. Heikkinen - 2006 - Journal of Medical Ethics 32 (9):522-525.
Privacy is a key ethical principle in occupational health services. Its importance is emphasised in several laws, in ethical codes of conduct as well as in the literature, yet there is only very limited empirical research on privacy in the occupational health context. Conceptual questions on privacy in the occupational health context are discussed. The baseline assumption is that, in this context, privacy cannot be approached and examined only from the employee’s vantage point but the employer’s point of view must (...)

  5. Stakeholder Engagement: Past, Present, and Future.Daniel Laude, Anna Heikkinen, Heta Leinonen, Sybille Sachs & Johanna Kujala - 2022 - Business and Society 61 (5):1136-1196.
Stakeholder engagement has grown into a widely used yet often unclear construct in business and society research. The literature lacks a unified understanding of the essentials of stakeholder engagement, and the fragmented use of the stakeholder engagement construct challenges its development and legitimacy. The purpose of this article is to clarify the construct of stakeholder engagement to unfold the full potential of stakeholder engagement research. We conduct a literature review on 90 articles in leading academic journals focusing on stakeholder engagement (...)

Work–Family Practices and Complexity of Their Usage: A Discourse Analysis Towards Socially Responsible Human Resource Management.Suvi Heikkinen, Anna-Maija Lämsä & Charlotta Niemistö - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 171 (4):815-831.
The question of work–family practices commonly arises in both theory and daily practice as a matter of responsibility in today’s organisations. More information is needed about them for socially responsible human resource management. In this article our interest is in how work–family practices, serve as an important element of SR-HRM, constructed as helpful for employees’ work–family integration, are realised in organisational life. We investigate the discursive ways in which members of two different organisations working at different organisational levels construct the (...)

Privacy and Dual Loyalties in Occupational Health Practice.Anne M. Heikkinen, Gustav J. Wickström, Helena Leino-Kilpi & Jouko Katajisto - 2007 - Nursing Ethics 14 (5):675-690.
This survey set out to explore occupational health professionals' courses of action with respect to privacy in a situation of dual loyalty between employees and employers. A postal questionnaire was sent to randomly selected potential respondents. The overall response rate was 64%: 140 nurses and 94 physicians returned the questionnaire. Eight imaginary cases involving an ethical dilemma of privacy were presented to the respondents. Six different courses of action were constructed within the set alternatives proposed. The study indicated that privacy (...)

Particularizing Nonhuman Nature in Stakeholder Theory: The Recognition Approach.Teea Kortetmäki, Anna Heikkinen & Ari Jokinen - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 185 (1):17-31.
Stakeholder theory has grown into one of the most frequent approaches to organizational sustainability. Stakeholder research has provided considerable insight on organization–nature relations, and advanced approaches that consider the intrinsic value of nonhuman nature. However, nonhuman nature is typically approached as an ambiguous, unified entity. Taking nonhumans adequately into account requires greater detail for both grounding the status of nonhumans and particularizing nonhuman entities as a set of potential organizational stakeholders with different characteristics, vulnerabilities, and needs. We utilize the philosophical (...)

The Influence of the Modulation Index on Frequency-Modulated Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials.Alexander M. Dreyer, Benjamin L. A. Heikkinen & Christoph S. Herrmann - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Based on increased user experience during stimulation, frequency-modulated steady-state visual evoked potentials have been suggested as an improved stimulation method for brain-computer interfaces. Adapting such a novel stimulation paradigm requires in-depth analyses of all different stimulation parameters and their influence on brain responses as well as the user experience during the stimulation. In the current manuscript, we assess the influence of different values for the modulation index, which determine the spectral distribution in the stimulation signal on FM-SSVEPs. We visually stimulated (...)

  13. Narrative Research: Voices of Teachers and Philosophers.Rauno Huttunen, Hannu L. T. Heikkinen & Leena Syrjälä (eds.) - 2002 - Jyväskylä: SoPhi.
Why do we tell our life stories? What is the point of studying narratives? What is the truth of narratives? How are narratives collected and studied by researchers? In this book the voices of teachers, education researchers, student teachers and philosophers join to form a polyphonic voice that attempts to answer these questions. They shed light on the obscure world of narrative research. This book contains both theoretical articles and empirical examples of narrative research. The theoretical articles introduce and develop (...)

Management of Sport Organizations at the Crossroad of Responsibility and Sustainability: Perceptions, Practices, and Prospects Around the World.Kirstin Hallmann, Suvi Heikkinen & Hanna Vehmas (eds.) - 2024 - Springer Nature Switzerland.
This edited volume evaluates how sport organizations in the public, private, and non-profit sectors define responsible management and sustainability and what these mean in their daily operations. Using country-specific cases, the chapters provide an empirical investigation of sport organizations in each sector, analyzing managerial decisions and policies through a sustainability lens. All chapters are structured in the same way, providing a truly comparative approach. Offering insights for scholars interested in responsibility and sustainability in different context, this volume will be important (...)

Understanding the Nature of Stakeholder Relationships: An Empirical Examination of a Conflict Situation. [REVIEW]Johanna Kujala, Anna Heikkinen & Hanna Lehtimäki - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 109 (1):53-65.
This article examines stakeholder relationships in a conflict situation. The focus of analysis is on how to understand stakeholder relationships as both ethical and strategic, and further, how the interests of different stakeholders become justified. To describe stakeholder relationships, we use media texts reporting on the case of a foreign investment project. The description shows how relationships evolve and how they constitute different episodes related to the conflict. We address the episodes by analysing stakeholder relationships and their salience. Furthermore, we (...)

A Teleological Approach to the Wicked Problem of Managing Utría National Park.Nicolás Acosta García, Katharine N. Farrell, Hannu I. Heikkinen & Simo Sarkki - 2017 - Environmental Values 26 (5):583-605.
Utría National Park is a remote biodiversity hotspot in Colombia. It encompasses ancestral territories of the Embera indigenous peoples and borders territories of Afro-descendant communities in El Valle. We explore environmental value conflicts regarding the use of the park, describing them as a Wicked Problem that has no clear solution. Juxtaposing how the territory is perceived by different communities, we employ Faber et al.'s heuristic of the three tele of living nature to search for deficiency in the third telos, service, (...)
