Bien des difficultés que nous éprouvons à comprendre les oeuvres philosophiques des Anciens proviennent souvent du fait que nous commmettons en les interprétant un double anachronisme: nous croyons que, comme beaucoup d'oeuvres modernes, elles sont destinées à communiquer des informations concernant un contenu conceptuel donné et que nous pouvons aussi en tirer directement des renseignements clairs sur la pensée et la psychologie de leur auteur. Mais en fait, elles sont très souvent des exercices spirituels que l'auteur pratique lui-même et fait (...) pratiquer à son lecteur. Elles sont destinées à former les âmes. In traditional epistemology, psychological self-knowledge is taken to be the paradigm of privleged a priori knowledge. According to an influential incompatibilist line of thought, traditional epistemic features attributed to psychological self-knowledge are supposed to be inconsistent with content externalism. In this paper, I examine one prominent compatibilist response by an advocate of content externalism, i.e., Fred Dretske's answer tot he incompatibilist argument, based on the model of displaced perceptual knowledge. I discuss the costs and benefits of his answer.

Learning to argue in a computer-mediated and structured fashion is investigated in this research. A study was conducted to compare dyads that were scripted in their computer-mediated collaboration with dyads that were not scripted. A process analysis of the chats of the dyads showed that the scripted experimental group used significantly more words, engaged in significantly more broadening and deepening of the discussion, and appeared to engage in more critical and objective argumentation than the non-scripted control group.

The term “critical thinking” is barely a century old; and it is controversial, fraught with ambiguity, and often treated as an academic orphan, condemned to the margins of scholarly culture. Despite its “royal” ancestry, as the embodiment of rationality inherited from Ancient Greece, it has come to represent an isolated and sectarian field of inquiry. But philosophers would be wise to take due credit for their offspring rather than shun or disavow critical thinking; and other scholars should recognize it as (...) their shared legacy from philosophy, and the embodiment of intellectual rigor. This article presents, discusses and analyses data from a Danish empirical study of authentic job interviews. Drawing on critical discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, as well as other fields, the author explores the relationship between success in job interviews and communicative style. The recontextualization of lifeworld resources is approached through both qualitative and quantitative analyses of spoken language. The author demonstrates that certain communicative styles and recontextualizations formed by a combination of lifeworld and job-related perspectives are more successful in job interviews; (...) on the basis of sociolinguistic evidence, he argues that these styles and recontextualizations are products of general processes of socialization rather than products of formal education. Ce geste d’ouverture trahit-il une secrète volonté de mainmise? Conduit-il à de nouvelles formes d’impérialisme culturel? Entre annexion «cannibale», qui méconnaît l’altérité, et discrétion excessive, (...) qui maintient dans l’ignorance et l’isolement, il importe de rechercher ensemble les conditions et critères d’une authentique reconnaissance. Douze livres récents illustrent quelques orientations de la recherche: essais où la réflexion personnelle sur le Christ et le christianisme accorde une place significative à la pluralité, voire la fragmentation des religions; inventaires raisonnés des thèses en présence ou propositions de synthèse; ouvrages sur un thème particulier ou une perspective nouvelle.

Performance appraisal interviews are carried out on the basis of known-in-advance written materials such as preparation forms and interview guides. This article demonstrates how participants manage interviews by following a question–answer–response format fit to address interview guide entries one at a time. Two recurring supervisor responses to employees’ talk about problems in work are investigated: positive prediction and advice. It is suggested that these responses serve to establish supervisor authority and deter participants from discussing issues raised in employee answers and (...) thus go against norms emanating from literature on management communication. Results obtained in interviews are put down in writing along the way and subsequently summarized in documents to be signed by both participants, that is, employee and supervisor. The article demonstrates how participants use positive prediction and advice to coordinate talk-in-interaction with handling written materials and note taking, as well as formulating conclusions suitable for writing. The analyses shed light on how talk in an institutional context becomes a middle-medium, that is, a bridge between writings, and how this process is accomplished in turn-taking procedures. (shrink)

: Computer-mediated environments provide an arena for learning to argue. We investigate to what extent student dyads’ online argumentation can be facilitated with collaboration scripts that prompt learners to prepare individually, create conflict, and encourage productive collaboration and argumentation. A process analysis of the chats of the dyads showed that the scripted treatment group used significantly more words and broadened and deepened their discussions significantly more than the unscripted group. Qualitative analysis indicates that scripted learners engaged in more critical and (...) objective argumentation than non-scripted learners. (shrink)

Depuis plusieurs générations, des chrétiens, anticipant quelquefois les ouvertures pratiquées par Vatican II, ont entrepris d'explorer le patrimoine de l'hindouisme. Parallèlement, depuis bientôt deux siècles, des hindous parfois célèbres ont dit comment ils percevaient la figure du Christ ou comprenaient le christianisme. La curiosité suscitée par les premiers contacts s'est-elle émoussée? La séduction du Jésus des évangiles opère-t-elle moins? Quoi qu'il en soit, il peut être salutaire de prendre la mesure d'une certaine indifférence: beaucoup d'hindous ne se montrent guère curieux (...) du christianisme . Bien plus, depuis une trentaine d'années, quelques-uns des porte-parole d'une «hindouité» plus militante diffusent largement des opinions de nature à décevoir ou à blesser le lecteur chrétien. Excessives et injustes, souvent biaisées dans leur base documentaire, ces diatribes n'en reflètent pas moins une perception du christianisme, de son étrangeté au regard hindou.For several generations, Christians, sometimes anticipating the opening created by Vatican II, have been endeavouring to explore the heritage of Hinduism. In parallel and now for nearly two centuries, at times famous Hindus have noted how they perceived the figure of Christ or understood Christianity. Has that curiosity awoken by first contacts been dulled? Has the Jesus of the Gospels become less attractive? Whatever may be the response, it may be fruitful to take the measure of a certain indifference: many Hindus are hardly curious about Christianity . Furthermore, for the last thirty years, some of those speaking for a more militant brand of “Hinduity” have widely expressed opinions that can disappoint or hurt a Christian reader. Although excessive and unjust as well as often biased in their use of documents, these diatribes nonetheless reflect at least a partial perception of Christianity and of its strangeness for a Hindu beholder. Les déclarations de Nostra Aetate sur les traditions religieuses de l'Asie permirent de passer de l'ère des pionniers - occidentaux ou asiatiques - à celle de la 'réception' du dialogue interreligieux par les Églises d'Asie. L'article examine quelques facettes des évolutions de ces 40 dernières années: rencontre des spiritualités, tant au plan de leurs patrimoines classiques qu'à celui de leurs expressions populaires ou contemporaines; engagement commun pour la libération; prise de conscience de la complexité culturelle et religieuse de sociétés traversées (...) par des mutations rapides... En Asie, les théologies chrétiennes des religions et le dialogue interreligieux concernent la vie ecclésiale dans sa globalité. (shrink)

Firstly, this paper aims to analyze how verbal and visual modes contribute to build two basic components of cartoons: the referenced situation and the fictional situation. Secondly, it aims to unravel the semiotics of this discursive genre by offering a fine-grained picture of modal variations and continuities of the rhetorical resources deployed, by means of which the fictional situation is displayed. The corpus is composed of 50 multimodal cartoons chosen by cartoonists of 22 nationalities as the most representative of their (...) work in the frame of a wide questionnaire. Category analysis and non-parametric statistics were applied. We identified and fleshed out four different types of modal functioning of resources: visual preference, verbal preference, modal flexibility, and genuine multimodal functioning. Even if visual and multimodal metaphor were often in charge of transferring meaning from fiction to the referenced situation, results show that other resources such as antithesis, irony, and syllepsis can become the key resources of cartoons. Findings highlight the multilayered functioning of cartoons, among which plastic features can play a significant role, and provide further evidence in favor of the hyperdetermination of humor hypothesis proposed by Attardo. Le chaos définit notre siècle. Rien d'apocalyptique dans cette affirmation, qui ne condamne pas nécessairement le monde à l'état de cendre et de poussière. Le chaos définit simplement l'imprévisibilité, l'imprédictibilité et l'incertitude de nos sociétés complexes et instables dont l'homme maîtrise de moins en moins l'évolution. Jusqu'à aujourd'hui notre morale reposait essentiellement sur la maîtrise. Il nous faut maintenant apprendre à vivre autrement, c'est-à-dire en fonction de l'immaîtrisable. Ce qui ne signifie pas qu'il faut consentir au chaos comme s'il nous (...) était destiné. Le chaos n'est ni bon ni mauvais, il n'est ni pour l'homme ni contre l'homme: il lui est étranger. Et c'est pourquoi il requiert au fond de nous une force qui, sans prétendre accéder à la maîtrise du monde, nous permette d'assumer et d'affronter son étrangeté. Cette force, je l'appelle "l'Empire de soi". L'Empire de soi se distingue de la maîtrise de soi. Il s'agit non pas pour l'homme de dompter les énergies et les pulsions qui le traversent, mais, au contraire, de faire l'expérience initiale de son impuissance face au chaos du monde, afin de construire, à l'épreuve de sa faiblesse et de ses fragilités originaires, sa force la plus propre. Morale et chaos décrit ainsi les étapes de la constitution de cette force que le sentiment même de notre impuissance permet de constituer, sans fondement, mais par notre seule capacité à endurer le temps et à s'y maintenir pour mieux y passer et le faire passer à travers lui-même. Synthesizing forty years' work by France's leading sociologist, this book exemplifies Bourdieu's unique ability to link sociological theory, historical information, and philosophical thought. It makes explicit the presuppositions of a state of 'scholasticism', a certain leisure liberated from the urgencies of the world. Philosophers have brought these presuppositions into the order of discourse, more to legitimate than analyze them, and this is the primary systematic, epistemological, ethical, and aesthetic error that Bourdieu subjects to methodological critique. Pascalian because he, too, was (...) concerned with symbolic power, he refused the temptation of foundationalist thinking, attended to 'ordinary people', and was determined to seek the reason for seemingly illogical behavior rather than simply condemning it. Bourdieu charts a negative philosophy, whose intellectual debt to such other 'heretical' philosophers as Wittgenstein, Austin, Dewey, and Peirce, renews traditional questioning of concepts of violence, power, time, history, the universal, and the purpose and direction of existence. Depuis trente ou quarante ans, le bouddhisme connaît un succès croissant en Occident et les études historiques et anthropologiques se multiplient. La publication d'un dossier des Recherches Sociologiques est l'occasion de présenter quelques caractéristiques de cette expansion : diversité des écoles, relations entre disciples occidentaux et communautés d'origine asiatique, nouveaux mouvements religieux d'inspiration bouddhique. Sont également évoquées quelques questions posées par les développements du bouddhisme dans nos pays : nécessaire acculturation et respect du message originel, pertinence de la vie monastique (...) et des rituels, autonomie de l'individu et rôle des institutions. For too long, a majority of economic stories speak of perfectly informed, fully rational optimisation within a purely materialistic world – leaving a lack of evidence and explanation regarding human decision makers and entrepreneurs revolutionising the decision space. Strands like game theory and institutional economics have already adopted a more practical view. Evolutionary and behavioural economics were finally able to establish the necessary links to other disciplines – like psychology and informational science. This paper recaps selected parts of the literature (...) that favour a conceptional view of computational agents. Firstly, we invite economic modellers to question the microfoundation of their assumptions with regard to the individual or to an aggregate level of human behaviour that they truly refer to. Secondly, we illustrate the potential, as well as the limitations, that computational agents exhibit – with regard to the incorporation of creativity as the main source of innovative behaviour. Thirdly, this rather superficial collection of ideas serves as a position paper for future approaches. (shrink)
