The article entails a critical discussion of the book Capitalism, Alienation and Critique by Asger Sørensen. Like Sørensen’s book, it stresses the importance of the first generation of critical theory – especially Horkheimer and Adorno – although Sørensen is at the same time critized for neglecting the insights of Horkheimer and Adornos work from the mid-1940s and onwards. In arguing for the actuality of especially the late Horkheimer, the article emphasizes the following topics: The problems of education and ‘Bildung’, The (...) historical transformation of the critique of Capitalism after the Second World War and The drawbacks of classical humanism when it comes to grasping the current political and ecological crisis. The article aims at reconstructing Kierkegaard’s reception of Schopenhauer’s philosophy with the purpose of discussing the pessimism of Kierkegaard’s late writings. The thesis of the article is that the theology of the late Kierkegaard that lies behind his attack on the so-called ‘Christendom’ and, in a wider perspective, on Protestantism in general, must be characterized as ‘pessimistic,’ insofar as it considers the mundane world as fundamentally ‘wicked’ or ‘wretched.’ Accordingly, a certain tendency toward asceticism and denial of the world becomes (...) a distinctive feature of Kierkegaard’s late works and of his interpretation of Christianity. Kierkegaard’s pessimism is, however, limited to his view of the mundane world, and he does not, like Schopenhauer, consider human existence fundamentally meaningless and purposeless. On the contrary, it is the aim of life for the true Christian, according to Kierkegaard, to obtain eternal salvation through self-chosen suffering and negation of his or her own desires for temporal gratification. The article reconstructs the history of the concept of “Bildung” from its origin in the philosophy of Enlightenment to the crisis of education in the middle of the 20th century. After a presentation of the rise of the concept in the 18th and 19th century, the article discusses Horkheimer and Adornos critique of the classical tradition of Bildung and their diagnosis of the intellectual and educational climate in Th e Western World after the 2nd World War. Following this it presents (...) the even more pessimistic view of the Austrian philosopher Konrad Paul Liessmann, who in his book Theorie der Unbildung from 2008 claims that the concept of “Bildung” today has no longer any normative impact on the theory and practice of education. In the final section I second this view by claiming that the tradition of Bildung is now closed: What is left of it is its history. (shrink)
