The purpose of the present systematic and critical review was to assess the findings and to identify the gaps in the literature concerning gay and bisexual fathers. A comprehensive search of relevant literature using electronic databases and reference lists for articles published until December 2016 was conducted. A total of 63 studies, spanning from 1979 to 2016, were collected. More than half of the studies were published after 2011 and the overwhelming majority were conducted in the United States. Nine themes (...) were identified in the studies reviewed: (1) Pathways to fatherhood; (2) Motivations for fatherhood; (3) Parenting experiences and childrearing; (4) Family life and relationship quality; (5) Gender and father identities and gender-role orientation; (6) Disclosure of sexual identity; (7) Social climate; (8) Father’s psychosocial adjustment; and (9) Children’s psychosocial adjustment. It was found that research on gay fatherhood appears to be more heterogeneous than on lesbian motherhood, perhaps because of the variety of pathways to parenthood (via co-parenting, adoption, fostering, or surrogacy). Two-father families are becoming more visible in research on sexual minority parenting and gradually transforming the conceptualization of parenting in family research. (shrink)

This article seeks to understand why femininity seems to be often present in artificial intelligence and tackle the questions that arise when this phenomenon is subject to closer inspection. It draws on a previous study on the relationship between gender and AI, complemented by an analysis of digital assistants such as Alexa, Cortana, Google Assistant and Siri that reveals how these entities tend to be feminized through their anthropomorphization, the tasks that they perform and their behavioural traits. Furthering this discussion, (...) this article addresses current trends of development of digital assistants and their stance towards gender, considering the functions or features that are being prioritized in AI evolution. It then focuses on the main questions raised by researchers and academics when examining the phenomenon and confronts these views with discussions around the feminization of AI in the context of online media coverage. This debate also highlights how common conceptions of AI and its portrayals of gender are influenced by bodies of fiction. Finally, the project Conversations with ELIZA seeks to comment on this phenomenon by ironically exposing and reinforcing common stereotypes and gender assumptions. In this manner, this study seeks to incite reflection on how artificial intelligence is reflecting our social and cultural views back to us. (shrink)

No artigo, apresentamos uma análise sobre a loucura a partir de Marx, extraindo sua compreensão sobre como ela é produzida no modo de produção capitalista (MPC). Para isso, analisamos produções marxianas acerca do sofrimento ou deste nas suas formas mais aguçadas como a loucura e o suicídio, situando tal compreensão nos marcos de sua análise totalizante, materialista histórico-dialética sobre o ser social no MPC e dialogando com elaborações de importantes autores no campo psi, cujos entendimentos se fundamentam nos postulados marxianos. Como resultado, explicitamos o caráter social da loucura, que diz de sua determinação social, como expressão ou desdobramento da “questão social” no MPC, tendo como base material o conjunto das relações de produção e a alienação e estranhamento pelo trabalho (alienado e estranhado) como fundamento. Expomos também a crítica marxiana às formas hegemônicas asilares e coercitivas de compreensão e tratamento da loucura, argumentando que nele existem germens ou protoformas de crítica e oposição ao que se desenvolveu como psiquiatria e à lógica (e instituição) asilar-manicomial. O presente trabalho objetiva fazer uma análise sobre algumas das principais temáticas elaboradas pelo pensador argentino Luis Alberto Warat, quais sejam: o antropofagismo waratiano, o reencontro com a subjetividade perdida e a carnavalização. Para isso, analisou- se uma das obras mais caras do pensamento waratiano: A ciência jurídica e seus dois maridos. Buscou-se através da análise empreendida, elaborar uma crítica sobre paradigmas tradicionais de ciência, incluindo aqui, a própria Ciência do Direito. Sobreleva-se o caráter de indisciplina das atividades artístico-literárias para (...) insinuar as falhas históricas das disciplinas bem instituídas, do pensamento e da cultura dominantes. Background: Family sense of coherence can be defined as the cognitive map of a family that enables the family to deal with stress during their lifetime. FSOC is the degree to which a family perceives family life as comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful. To the best of our knowledge, few studies have used this scale, and very few have evaluated FSOC Scale psychometric properties.Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the original FSOC Scale in a sample of Portuguese (...) caregivers of children aged between 10 and 15 years.Methods: A total of 329 caregivers completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the FSOC Scale. Analyses were performed to evaluate the factor structure of the FSOC Scale with 26 items as well as composite reliability, internal consistency, convergent-related validity, and discriminant-related validity of the scale scores.Results: The findings supported a three-factor solution for a 13-item version that maintains the original FSOC Scale structure. The three FSOC dimensions presented a good fit to the data. Cronbach’s alpha, composite reliability, and convergent-related validity were considered very good for the FSOC Scale. No evidence of discriminant-related validity was found for the dimensions of FSOC.Conclusion: The findings support the use of the Portuguese FSOC Scale for research and clinical purposes with Portuguese caregivers. Future research is necessary to further develop a European Portuguese version of the FSOC Scale.Implications: This study provides a psychometric evaluation of FSOC Scale characteristics in a Portuguese sample. The results are helpful for clinicians and family therapists who work with families since it could help them to assess the resources of families and their ability to cope with adversity and enhance their strengths. Esse artigo tem por objetivo elaborar uma análise da questão da subjetividade em Heidegger como principal estrutura do mundo moderno. Para tanto, trataremos das principais características que configuram a época moderna e como essas características apresentam, como elemento comum e determinante, o critério de verdade. Discutiremos como a concepção de verdade foi gestada na metafísica clássica e consolidada com a ciência moderna, a partir da subjetividade técnico-científica. As principais obras estudadas para construir nosso percurso discursivo são: “O tempo da imagem (...) do mundo” (2012); Meditação (2010); A Questão da Técnica (2008); Sobre a essência da verdade (1983). O estudo dessas obras foi apoiado por alguns comentadores que referenciamos no decorrer do texto. A análise dessas obras nos permitiu intercruzar algumas reflexões de Heidegger acerca da construção e desdobramento das estruturas do mundo moderno e, consequentemente, compreender a atuação imperiosa do ser humano sobre a natureza. Nesse sentido, esse artigo procura contribuir para compreendermos o processo de edificação do mundo moderno e, consequentemente, pensarmos alternativas possíveis de reestruturação de suas bases, e, portanto, novas formas de atuar sobre o mundo. Formas essas, que não sejam apenas pelo viés da exploração e dominação, mas através de uma interação mais autêntica, empática e respeitosa com os diversos modos de existência. (shrink)

Considerando as crianças como atores sociais (com voz e ação) competentes para a interpretação do contexto em que se inserem, apresenta-se no presente artigo uma reflexão sobre a sua importância, enquanto sujeitos e participantes na investigação partilhada. Através da participação das crianças como investigadoras em dois estudos de opinião, pretende-se discutir as respetivas possibilidades e limites, enquanto metodologia participativa na Educação Básica. A informação proveniente das crianças forneceu pistas de intervenção aplicadas à escola.

Like all great thinkers, Charles Taylor was able with his oeuvre to challenge and often change the vocabulary, habits and theoretical imaginary of his readers. In this sense, he deserves to be celebrated as a teacher in the broadest sense of the word. Especially remarkable is his mastery in making the complexity of our experience as modern men and women accessible. Now, the first thing that can be learned from his sane attitude towards modern epistemology is the resolve to embrace (...) what he once called "a hazy picture of history" , in which order and chaos coexist in the same picture as a warning for the purity seekers. Our view of history must remain somewhat hazy because, if we want to understand long-term change without resorting to an old-style philosophy of history, we have to do justice both to historical discontinuity and to historical continuity. Thus, understanding deep historical change means being able to combine a fair dose of theoretical recklessness and a good eye for the details. (shrink)

Cuenta el autor, desde una perspectiva hermenéutico-historiográfica, lo acaecido durante los años sesenta-setenta en el ámbito de la cultura jurídica italiana, en la que una serie de temas, articulados en torno a la teoría de la interpretación, terminan en un intento de re-fundación del saber jurídico y redefinición del papel del jurista. El pensamiento jurídico de los sesenta se transforma en la década siguiente al teorizarse el carácter político de la actividad del jurista, al mismo tiempo que se reafirma la (...) politicidad del derecho. A partir de aquí, las líneas de una jurisprudencia "alternativa comienzan a ser trazadas mediante el intento de hacer explotar las contradicciones inherentes a la relación capital-trabajo, el encuentro del saber jurídico con el marxismo y la sugerencia de definiciones innovadoras del método y del saber jurídicos. Posteriormente se desarrollan direcciones estratégicas diversas que culminan en la decadencia del proyecto de jurisprudencia "alternativa", del que se pone en discusión su misma premisa fundamentadora. To say that the liturgy is a question of faith means that your object is transcendent and has to do with God and with one unique feature, ie, the very act of celebrating an act of faith. The liturgy is not only motivated by faith, but it is their faith in words, which is a very peculiar dimension.

Nosso objetivo, neste texto, será demonstrar que a noção de força, é, na verdade, uma noção de como a força pode ser tratada como uma atividade política. Nosso objetivo, nesse sentido, será demonstrar que, enquanto atividade política: força está amparada em diferentes possibilidades de uso e, principalmente, que força, no Príncipe, pode ser concebida como um exercício de virtù.

What is a person? What is the self? In the essay, I try to explore the historical roots of contemporary anxieties over the impact that the novel neurotechnologies and the new, rapidly accumulating scientific knowledge of the brain may have on our sense of self. My conclusion is that the allegedly novel situation is not so novel, after all, and that, in fact, we are still moving along a track opened long ago by early-modern transformations in Western culture. This, of (...) course, does not mean that we are not going to face serious problems, but only that we already have the intellectual resources to cope with them effectively (in so far as we consider them to be manageable issues). In the end, neuroethical dilemmas will turn out to be another variety of modern metaphysical and moral quandaries. (shrink)

Resumo: Partindo do pressuposto que o Ser é notavelmente o escopo de toda a filosofia de Heidegger, este artigo procura indicar traços pontuais daquela que foi considerada o maior labor intelectual de sua vida: Ser e Tempo. Com o intuito de explorar o projeto da analítica existencial, Heidegger lança mão de dois conceitos, o de manualidade e circunvisão . Trata-se de explicitar, a partir desses conceitos contidos na obra Ser e Tempo a contribuição original do filósofo para o diagnóstico crítico (...) da modernidade e para posteriores aprofundamentos filosóficos sobre a técnica moderna. Por fim, a comunicação indicará à luz da discussão realizada a partir das reflexões de Heidegger, uma alternativa possível para outro modo de lidar com a técnica, não desprezando sua importância para as modificações e desenvolvimento do homem e da natureza, mas tampouco absolutizando o modo como a técnica modifica a interação do homem com o mundo em que habita.: Based on the assumption that Being is notably the scope of the whole philosophy of Heidegger, this article seeks to show occasional traces of what was considered the greatest intellectual labor of his life: Being and Time. In order to exploit the project's existential analytic, Heidegger makes use of two concepts, and to manualidade circumvision. It is explicit from these concepts contained in the book Being and Time the original contribution of the philosopher to the critical diagnosis of modernity and subsequent philosophical insights about the modern technique. Finally, the Notice indicates in the light of the discussion held from the reflections of Heidegger, a possible alternative to otherwise deal with the technique, not disregarding its importance to the changes and development of man and nature, but neither the absolutizando how the technique modifies the interaction of man and the world he inhabits. This paper illustrates the main features of Luigi Ferrajoli’s theoretical approach to law, as they are developed in his Principia Juris . These include his opposition to the traditional perspective of natural law; his anti-cognitivist orientation; and, finally, his fundamentally normative approach. Among the numerous problems discussed in Ferrajoli’s compendious book, the paper focuses on his definition of constitutional democracy. In particular, the paper discusses the way in which Ferrajoli defines the complementarity between democracy and rights; Ferrajoli’s own criticism of (...) T. H. Marshall’s idea of citizenship; and the importance that the distinction between ‘decidable’ and ‘non-decidable’ rights have in Ferrajoli’s own system. Other issues of interests that are briefly discussed include the constitutionalisation of private law, and the defence of different kinds of liberty-rights. (shrink)

In broad terms, realism, relativism and pluralism can be regarded as the theoretical articulations of the following insights. Realism embodies the sense that what is at stake in our beliefs is something serious, i.e. that there is a fact of the matter, independent from our desire, which is going to decide whether what we believe in is true or not. Relativism, on the other hand, incorporates the realization that our cognitive take on the world is always perspectival, that there is (...) no way to overcome the blind spot which enables the knower to have a world in view at all. Pluralism, finally, draws on the intuition that every human being and every human community cannot fully understand, let alone save themselves, without the help of others’ sense-making efforts. Against the background of Charles Taylor’s philosophy, the core of truth of the above insights will be discussed and arranged to develop an active view of toleration that not only urges us to put up with others, but encourages us to rely on the benefit of coming to terms with different outlooks and ways of life. Al modo como Gadamer desarrolla la "tensión" existente entre método y verdad, este artículo pretende desarrollar la tensión entre dos conceptos centrales de la hermenéutica gadameriana: 'aplicación' y 'lingüisticidad'(Sprachlichkeil). La naturaleza práctica, siempre particular y situada, de la comprensión es confrontada con la consideración del lenguaje como medio universal del comprender, en tanto instaura un 'acuerdo previo', un 'diálogo efectivo', en toda comunidad lingüística. Sin embargo, la asimetría entre estos dos conceptos hace difícil la comprehensión de la contradicción (y hasta (...) exclusión) entre prejuicios e interpretaciones diversas que no necesariamente se enfrentan en términos dialógicos o de 'acuerdo que nos precede'. In my paper, I set The Language Animal against a broader picture of Taylor’s intellectual trajectory. Sources of the Self (1989) left three major questions open in its wake: (a) the viability of religious moral sources in a ‘secular’ age; (b) the compatibility between a robust moral realism and a genealogical account of modern identity; (c) the meaning and destiny of the so-called ‘linguistic turn’. This is the framing topic of his last book. Although Taylor’s variety of hermeneutics is unquestionably (...) a product of the linguistic turn, he has operated with a broad notion of the linguistic capacity from the start. Language is, for him, a shared activity and the acknowledgment of its animal embeddedness functions in his work as an antidote against any too idealized a view of the kind of creatures that humans are. In his earlier writings, however, a structural tension lurked below the surface between a Gadamerian notion of Sprache and a more phenomenological, Merleau-Pontyan, embodied outlook that was less modeled on articulate speech. My claim is that his new book marks a shift from a more speech-oriented to a more body-oriented understanding of language. (shrink)

McGuinness (2002) é possivelmente, ao lado de Ishiguro (1969), um dos principais nomes do antirrealismo no Tractatus. De modo geral, a leitura antirrealista é baseada no princípio do contexto (TLP, 3.3) – [...] “é só no contexto da proposição que um nome tem significado” – e se inicia pela análise do uso do nome, no contexto da proposição, para, a partir disso, explicar o seu significado. A tese central da leitura antirrealista diz, portanto, que não é possível determinar o significado (...) de um nome fora de seu contexto proposicional. A leitura oposta, conhecida como “leitura realista”, entende que o significado do nome simples seria determinado pelo objeto simples ao qual o nome está associado, pois, os objetos simples seriam anteriores logicamente à linguagem – Malcolm (1986), Pears (1987) e Hacker (1986). Neste artigo irei apresentar algumas das teses de McGuinness contra à leitura realista, além de apresentar também, de modo geral, algumas dificuldades textuais enfrentadas pela própria leitura antirrealista. O argumento que sustento diz que, embora McGuinness, apoiado no princípio do contexto, defenda que o significado do nome simples é determinado pelo contexto, sua leitura parece assumir ao fim uma espécie de realismo residual.
