We welcome Ballantyne & Schaefer’s discussion of the issues concerning consent and use of health data for research. In response to their acknowledgement of the need for public debate and discussion, we provide evidence from our own public consultation on this topic.

Ekphrasis, a part of the ancient Greek and Roman rhetorical practices, is, in its most basic sense, the verbal expression of a visual object. Since the description of Achilles’ shield in Homer’s Iliad, ekphrasis has been a literary practice used for the portrayal of visual artworks through fiction and poetry, as well as in prose written in history, art criticism and travelogues. Ekphrasis is a convenient literary tool for analysing the author’s treatment of the object depicted. Ekphrastic studies enable the (...) identification of the author’s relationship with objectivity and subjectivity, and the building blocks of the said subjectivity, through literary elements. What kind of fictional language does ekphrasis, which is essentially the act of making the mute object speak, point to, in Evliya Çelebi’s representation? This article will aim to examine the subjective factors, personal taste and cultural positioning that emerge in Evliyâ Çelebi’s writing practice, mainly in his “ekphrastic” narration of the Western paintings that he saw in the Balkans and Vienna, which he describes in great detail in his Seyahatnâme. It is of the author’s opinion that, although Evliyâ Çelebi’s cultural positioning imposed limitations on his aesthetic perception and ekphrastic narration, he had an admiration for the Western art; and his “actual” cultural position manifests itself in an “in-betweenness” in the East-West spiral, which also reflects his unique literary mode. Evliyâ Çelebi, who wrote accounts of his travels that lasted over forty years, was an enlightened Ottoman saraylı, a courtier as his name çelebi indicates. Seyahatnâme, a ten-volume, first-person narrative, is one of the few accounts of the seventeenth-century Ottoman world and its periphery from the perspective of a Muslim intellectual. Robert Dankoff states, "The Book of Travels is a unique geographical, social, cultural, and linguistic record of the places and peoples the author encountered, and an invaluable source for many (...) aspects of life in his time."1 Therefore, the work has been significant for a... Shame and guilt are negative social emotions that are sensitive to culture, and findings from past research have suggested that shame impairs perspective-taking cognitive ability more than guilt does. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is a lack of research that has considered culture and experimentally tested the effect of shame and guilt on perspective-taking. Taking an experimental perspective, this study aimed to examine how shame and guilt states affect perspective-taking performance in two different cultures. Data from German (...) and Turkish female college students provided support for the effect of emotional state and culture on perspective-taking, but there was no interaction between them. In the dictionary, kināya, which means “to say a word and to mean a second meaning with that word”, means “to use a word both in its true meaning and in a second meaning other than this meaning“ as the Arabic rhetoric term. The conceptualization process of kināya as a sub-title of the ilm al-bayān started in the second century hijrī and took its present form in the seventh century hijrī with Abū Yaʿqūb al-Sakkākī (d. 626/1229) and in the eighth (...) century with Khaṭīb al-Qazwīnī (d. 739/1338). The authors of modern Arabic rhetoric, based on the methodological approaches of these two authors in their definitions and classifications of kināya, sometimes adopted the same approach as they were, and sometimes made some additions and criticisms by making original evaluations. For example, Qazvinî's لفظ أريد به لازم معناه مع جواز إرادة معناه حينئذ “(Original) meaning can be meant, but the necessary meaning is the word that is meant by it.” While some contemporary authors have taken the definition of kināya with the same words, some have added the phenomenon of clue to this definition. There is a similar situation in the classification of kināya, and while some authors have taken the categorization made by Sakkākī without making any changes, some authors have made various additions to this division. In the modern period covering the last century, many books have been written on Arabic rhetoric, and some of these books have come to the fore in Arab countries and our country. In this study, in the context of the subject of kināya, twelve of the Arabic rhetoric books written in the modern period were selected and the definitions and classifications of kināya in these books were examined. The aim of this study is to bring together and compare various perspectives on kināya in contemporary Arabic rhetoric books and to identify different approaches to the subject. (shrink)

Bu çalışma, teşbihin beyan ilmi içerisindeki yerini klasik belagat çalışmaları üzerinden araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Klasik kabulde beyan ilminin; teşbih, mecaz ve kinaye olmak üzere üç temel konusu bulunmakta ve söz sanatları bu konuların altında ele alınmaktadır. Beyan ilmi içerisinde mütalaa edilen söz sanatları, ekseriyetle, anlamına çıkarım yoluyla ulaşılan ifade biçimleridir. Şu var ki teşbihte anlama ulaşmak için çıkarıma gerek duyulmaz. Öte yandan teşbihin beyan ilmi içerisindeki konumuna ilişkin mevcut kabulü nakzeden ifadeler bulunmaktadır. Çalışmamız, belagat literatüründe tartışılan hakikat-mecaz ayrımının beyan ilminin konularını (...) belirleyen bir kıstas olduğunu savunmakta ve bu savı gerekçelendirmek üzere üç hususu dikkate almaktadır. Bunlar: klasik çalışmaların belagati alt dallara ayırmada esas aldığı belirleyici özellikler, teşbihi tanımlamada kullandığı parametreler ve son olarak hakikat-mecaz ayrımında kullandığı parametrelerdir. Araştırmamızın başlıca sonucu: klasik yaklaşımın teşbihi, söze kattığı güzellik ve ikna edicilik açısından özel bir ifade türü kabul ettiği ancak beyan ilminde yer alan diğer söz sanatları gibi çıkarıma dayalı anlatım biçimlerinden kabul etmediğidir. Klasik belagat literatürü, teşbihin istiarenin zeminini oluşturan bir konu olduğunu açıkça ifade ederken aynı açıklığı teşbihin doğrudan anlatım olduğunu ifade etme konusunda göstermemiştir. (shrink)
