In the great kingdoms of ancient Mesopotamia, the king’s power was often evoked by means of lion symbolism. This has led scholars to conclude that lion motifs, and especially that of the lion-slaying hero, in early Greek art and literature were cultural borrowings from the more populous and urbanised civilisations to the east. Yet it is also notable that the Greek tradition, at least from the time of the Homeric poems, tended to problematise the ethics of the leonine man. This (...) article explores the function of lion imagery in narratives of elite masculinity in western Asia and early Greece respectively. It will argue that Greek myth and epic reflect on and problematise any potential equation between lions and kingly prestige, power and masculinity, instead drawing attention to the savagery and social isolation of the lion-like man-of-power, and his difficulty in conforming to the expectations of civilised society. International political, social, economic and religious developments influence how local communities operate. The South African church society is influenced by such developments taking place globally and which clearly influence how local churches function. This article explores the role of the contemporary church as a ‘reformation agency’ in enhancing a socially transformative agenda in South Africa. A qualitative research approach – an interpretative phenomenology design – was employed to negotiate a shared understanding through conversation and intersubjective meaning-making with church ministers, with (...) the primary focus being their subjective experience of the changing role of the church in enhancing a transformative agenda in a South African context. A purposive sampling consisted of local church leaders who participated in the face-to-face and telephonic semi-structured interviews to achieve the purpose of the study. The findings clearly show that deliberate and intentional actions by churches allow them to become a voice for the marginalised, to create spaces for searching for excellence and to increase the quality of servant leadership, all as vehicles for transforming church society. Furthermore, servant leadership is a social phenomenon, a philosophy-in-practice aimed at leading by example to achieve a common goal. To accomplish this, church ministers are required to spearhead the challenge as a prerequisite to creating ‘lived experienced’ opportunities for members as an inward-outward spiritual journey. Finally, church leaders believed that transformation is a secular dimension, but that it can also be aligned towards God’s redemption plan and enhancing a socially just transformation agenda. Ultimately, this study proposed several recommendations to allow the local church to be relevant in practicing and promoting stronger unity and reconciliation amongst all churches nationally and globally. Es wird dabei als anerkannt vorausgesetzt, dass die Entwicklung der Lebewesen auf genotypischen Potenzen beruht, die nach Einwirkung bestimmter Umweltreize bestimmte phÄnotypische Effekte bewirken. Es wird als “phylogenetischer Auslesefaktor” einer genotypischen Potenz derjenige Faktor der Äusseren oder inneren Umwelt bezeichnet, an den in der Phylogenese die Anpassung erfolgt ist. Der phylogenetische Auslesefaktor einer genotypischen Potenz wird (...) in der Ontogenese als genaktivierender Manifestationsreiz für den entsprechenden phÄnotypischen Effekt rekapituliert. The factor of the exogenous or endogenous environment to which adaptation has occurred during the phylogenesis is defined as the phylogenetical selectionfactor.A mechanism of ontogenetical evolution and involution is deduced from known experimental results and observations. This mechanism can be characterized by the following four main principles. The phylogenetical selectionfactor of a genotypical potency is recapitulated during ontogenesis as the gene-activating stimulus for the manifestation of the corresponding phenotypical effect. After the cessation of the gene-activating stimulus the activation of the genotypical potency declines in a characteristic manner. And according to it the phenotypical effect being dependent on this condition of gene-activation is involuted. This means that a phenotypical effect is manifest as stimulus dependent modification, as a temporary stimulus independent modification or as a temporary stimulus independent modification which is transmitted from generation to generation. During the ontogenetical evolution the phenotypical effect in a certain step of the development in the sphere of the endogenous environment is the manifestation stimulus activating the gene for the phenotypical effect of the following developmental step , since Phene n or Substrate n is the recapitulated selectionfactor for the genotypical potency of this step . When the ontogenetical evolution ends with the appearance of Phene n , Phene x−1 is the phylogenetical selectionfactor for Gene x−1 in the endogenous environment and is recapitulated as the gene-activating stimulus for the manifestation of Phene x . By the manifestation of Phene x Phene x−1 vanishes and thus the manifestationstimulus for Phene x . In the nearly 40 years since implementation of federal regulations governing the protection of human participants in research, the number of clinical studies has grown exponentially. These studies have become more complex, with multisite trials now common, and there is increasing use of archived biospecimens and related data, including genomics data. In addition, growing emphasis on targeted cancer therapies requires greater collaboration and sharing of research data to ensure that rare patient subsets are adequately represented. Electronic records enable more extensive (...) data collection and mining, but also raise concerns about the potential for inappropriate or unauthorized use of data, bringing patient protections into a new landscape. There are also long-standing concerns about the processes and forms used to obtain informed consent from patients participating in clinical studies. These changes and challenges raise new ethical and practical questions for the oversight of clinical studies, and for protecting patients and their health information in an efficient manner that does not compromise the progress of biomedical research. Contemporary Issues for Protecting Patients in Cancer Research is the summary of a workshop convened by the National Cancer Policy Forum of the Institute of Medicine in February 2014 to explore contemporary issues in human subjects protections as they pertain to cancer research, with the goal of identifying potential relevant policy actions. Clinical researchers, government officials, members of Institutional Review Boards, and patient advocates met to discuss clinical cancer research and oversight. This report examines current regulatory provisions that may not adequately protect patients or may be hindering research, and discusses potential strategies and actions to address those challenges. The team has become a popular model to organize joint human–robot behavior. Robot teammates are designed with high-levels of autonomy and well-developed coordination skills to aid humans in unpredictable environments. In this paper, we challenge the assumption that robots will succeed as teammates alongside humans. Drawing from the literature on human teams, we evaluate robots’ potential to meet the requirements of successful teammates. We argue that lacking humanlike mental models and a sense of self, robots may prove untrustworthy and will (...) be rejected from human teams.
