The degradation of non-market relationships has rendered individuals unnecessarily vulnerable in disasters, including the global pandemic. While local networks of community-based aid that emerge in response to disasters improve the efficacy of response, they tend to be short-lived. This is unfortunate, since the existence and strength of such local networks prior to the onset of disasters not only boosts the efficacy of response but also contributes to the well-being of individuals and communities in non-disaster times. Therefore, individuals ought to establish (...) and strengthen fair-weather local networks of non-market relationships—that is, cultivate neighbor relationships. (shrink)

Comparisons of indirect measures with direct measures can help elucidate the relationship between nonconscious and conscious perception. We report three experiments on masked word priming in which we observed a negative correlation between prime discriminability and priming , i.e. where priming decreased with increasing prime visibility. While such observations are rare , they may indicate a conflict between conscious and nonconscious processing when primes are shown close to the subjective visibility threshold for the priming-relevant information. For instance, such a conflict (...) could occur between nonconscious processing of a prime’s meaning and conscious perception of prime letters. Theoretical accounts that discuss similar conflicts assume that the conflict is resolved either by automatically prioritising conscious processes or by discounting the estimated confusion caused by a prime-target pair . In both cases, priming is predicted to decrease when prime visibility increases from below threshold to perithreshold levels. Therefore, we suggest that negative priming-d’ relationships are most likely observed when the d’ measure assesses prime visibility at a level of representation that is below the level of representation at which priming arises, in terms of a putative hierarchy of word processing. “Humble” and “business school” are not two words you might associate together, but we can address grand challenges only if business school education instills epistemic humility through reflexivity. We hope that this call-to-action challenges educators to consider how we develop future business leaders who are sensitized to the communities around them, open to tackling the range of challenges that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) present to all of society.

Why do most positions in philosophy tend toward just two basic ideas? For the last 100 years philosophers have either been fanatic supporters of science even to the point of arguing philosophy away, or obliquely associating sciences complicity with the horrors of the twentieth century . Even Alain Badiou, who promotes the philosophical benefits of mathematics, draws a line at endorsing the natural sciences. Very few philosophers manage to do serious philosophical reflection on the sciences while avoiding unnecessary and uninspired (...) reductive and or accusatory work. Slavoj Zizek is the rare exception for those who desire to escape the current thought crippling dichotomy that seems to run rampant. The forthcoming paper will discuss Badiou in order to understand how his anti-naturalism is unproductive and counter to his revolutionary project. Badiou provides a useful focal point for understanding a long held bias towards the sciences. Zizek however overcomes the problems correlated with anti-naturalism by reading science through the lens of a psychoanalytic inspired collaboration of German Idealism. For Zizek, the natural sciences confirm the insights of Kant, Schelling and Hegel instead of foregoing them as “armchair thinking.” Our reading of Zizek will show that these ideas are far from being relics of an unenlightened era, represent a serious and provocative answer to facile distinctions that seek to support one discipline at the expense of the other.
