Neighbors Help in a Pandemic.Nora Boyd & Matthew Davis - 2021 - Erasmus Journal for Philosophy and Economics 14 (1).
The degradation of non-market relationships has rendered individuals unnecessarily vulnerable in disasters, including the global pandemic. While local networks of community-based aid that emerge in response to disasters improve the efficacy of response, they tend to be short-lived. This is unfortunate, since the existence and strength of such local networks prior to the onset of disasters not only boosts the efficacy of response but also contributes to the well-being of individuals and communities in non-disaster times. Therefore, individuals ought to establish (...)

Invisible is Better: Decrease of Subliminal Priming With Increasing Visibility.Doris Eckstein, Dennis Norris, Matthew Davis & Richard Henson - 2009 - PSYCHE: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Research On Consciousness 15 (2).
Comparisons of indirect measures with direct measures can help elucidate the relationship between nonconscious and conscious perception. We report three experiments on masked word priming in which we observed a negative correlation between prime discriminability and priming , i.e. where priming decreased with increasing prime visibility. While such observations are rare , they may indicate a conflict between conscious and nonconscious processing when primes are shown close to the subjective visibility threshold for the priming-relevant information. For instance, such a conflict (...)

Rethinking Business School Education: A Call for Epistemic Humility Through Reflexivity.Divya Singhal, Matthew C. Davis & Hinrich Voss - forthcoming - Business and Society.
“Humble” and “business school” are not two words you might associate together, but we can address grand challenges only if business school education instills epistemic humility through reflexivity. We hope that this call-to-action challenges educators to consider how we develop future business leaders who are sensitized to the communities around them, open to tackling the range of challenges that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) present to all of society.

  13. Badiou and Zizek on the question of Science.Matthew Davis - 2011 - International Journal of Žižek Studies 5 (2).
Why do most positions in philosophy tend toward just two basic ideas? For the last 100 years philosophers have either been fanatic supporters of science even to the point of arguing philosophy away, or obliquely associating sciences complicity with the horrors of the twentieth century . Even Alain Badiou, who promotes the philosophical benefits of mathematics, draws a line at endorsing the natural sciences. Very few philosophers manage to do serious philosophical reflection on the sciences while avoiding unnecessary and uninspired (...)
