Ethical and coordinative challenges in setting up a national cohort study during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany.J. Janne Vehreschild, Martin Witzenrath, Christof Winter, Heike Valentin, Christoph Stellbrink, Melanie Stecher, Margarete Scherer, Siegbert Rieg, Jens-Peter Reese, Christina Pley, Matthias Nauck, Maximilian Muenchhoff, Lazar Mitrov, Roberto Lorbeer, Dagmar Krefting, Thomas Illig, Kirsten Haas, Ramsia Geisler, Sarah Berger, Gabi Anton, Lisa Pilgram, Bettina Lorenz-Depiereux, Monika Kraus, Katharina Appel, Sina M. Hopff & Katharina Tilch - 2023 - BMC Medical Ethics 24 (1):1-16.
With the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), global researchers were confronted with major challenges. The German National Pandemic Cohort Network (NAPKON) was launched in fall 2020 to effectively leverage resources and bundle research activities in the fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We analyzed the setup phase of NAPKON as an example for multicenter studies in Germany, highlighting challenges and optimization potential in connecting 59 university and nonuniversity study sites. We examined the ethics application (...)

More is Better: English Language Statistics are Biased Toward Addition.Bodo Winter, Martin H. Fischer, Christoph Scheepers & Andriy Myachykov - 2023 - Cognitive Science 47 (4):e13254.
We have evolved to become who we are, at least in part, due to our general drive to create new things and ideas. When seeking to improve our creations, ideas, or situations, we systematically overlook opportunities to perform subtractive changes. For example, when tasked with giving feedback on an academic paper, reviewers will tend to suggest additional explanations and analyses rather than delete existing ones. Here, we show that this addition bias is systematically reflected in English language statistics along several (...)

    JAK/STAT pathway inhibition overcomes IL7-induced glucocorticoid resistance in a subset of human T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemias.C. Delgado-Martin, L. K. Meyer, B. J. Huang, K. A. Shimano, M. S. Zinter, J. V. Nguyen, G. A. Smith, J. Taunton, S. S. Winter, J. R. Roderick, M. A. Kelliher, T. M. Horton, B. L. Wood, D. T. Teachey & M. L. Hermiston - unknown
While outcomes for children with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia have improved dramatically, survival rates for patients with relapsed/refractory disease remain dismal. Prior studies indicate that glucocorticoid resistance is more common than resistance to other chemotherapies at relapse. In addition, failure to clear peripheral blasts during a prednisone prophase correlates with an elevated risk of relapse in newly diagnosed patients. Here we show that intrinsic GC resistance is present at diagnosis in early thymic precursor T-ALLs as well as in a subset (...)

Auditive Wissenskulturen: das Wissen klanglicher Praxis.Bernd Brabec de Mori & Martin Winter (eds.) - 2018 - Wiesbaden: Springer VS.

Ontoepistemological interpretation of Jaspers and Heidegger from Holzapfel.

Toward an Embodied Utopia: Marcuse, The Re-Ordering of Desire, and the "Broken" Promise of Post-Liberal Practices.J. Winters - 2013 - Télos 2013 (165):151-168.
Introduction Perhaps more than any other member of the Frankfurt School, Herbert Marcuse articulated a hope for a radically transfigured world. He imagined a world characterized by receptive, generous relationships rather than domination and violence. Yet Marcuse's philosophy of liberation has been placed on trial within various critical circles. Michel Foucault's rejection of the “repressive hypothesis” and his concomitant analysis of power as generative is typically interpreted as an indirect response to Marcuse's tendency to treat the social order as a (...)

Introduction to Phenomenological Research.Martin Heidegger - 2005 - Indiana University Press.
Introduction to Phenomenological Research, volume 17 of Martin Heidegger’s Gesamtausgabe, contains his first lectures given at Marburg in the winter semester of 1923–1924. In these lectures, Heidegger introduces the notion of phenomenology by tracing it back to Aristotle’s treatments of phainomenon and logos. This extensive commentary on Aristotle is an important addition to Heidegger’s ongoing interpretations which accompany his thinking during the period leading up to Being and Time. Additionally, these lectures develop critical differences between Heidegger’s phenomenology and (...)

Introduction to philosophy.Martin Heidegger - 2024 - Bloomington, Indiana: Indiana University Press. Edited by William McNeill.
Volume 27 of Heidegger's Complete Works offers a translation of the lecture course Einleitung in die Philosophie, which Martin Heidegger delivered in the winter semester of 1928-29 at the University of Freiburg. This course represents an important bridge between the last course Heidegger offered at Marburg in summer semester 1928, The Metaphysical Foundations of Logic, and the seminal winter semester 1929-30 course The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics. The two major themes treated in the course are the relation (...)

This is the first English translation of the seminar Martin Heidegger gave during the Winter of 1934-35, which dealt with Hegel's Philosophy of Right. This remarkable text is the only one in which Heidegger interprets Hegel's masterpiece in the tradition of Continental political philosophy while offering a glimpse into Heidegger's own political thought following his engagement with Nazism. It also confronts the ideas of Carl Schmitt, allowing readers to reconstruct the relation between politics and ontology. The book is (...)

In this study, we investigate the conceptual structure of the metaphor “SIMILARITY IS PROXIMITY.” The results of four experiments suggest a tight mental link between similarity and proximity. Two experiments revealed that people judge entities to be more similar to each other when they are placed closely in space, while two other experiments showed that entities are judged to be closer to each other when they are thought to be more similar. We discuss this bidirectional metaphor transfer effect in light (...)

In November 1953 after giving his lecture “The Question Concerning Technology” at the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, Martin Heidegger wrote in a letter to his wife: “Yet the decisive thing is…the fact that a horizon is opening up amongst the young people, one which announces itself from within technology while going beyond it.” The genesis of Heidegger’s now famous essay occurred 4 years earlier, however, during a series of four lectures delivered on the evening of December 1st, 1949 (...)

Heidegger in America explores the surprising legacy of his life and thought in the United States of America. As a critic of modern life, Heidegger often lamented the growing global influence of all things American. However, it was precisely in America where his thought inspired the work of generations of thinkers – not only philosophers but also theologians, architects, novelists, and even pundits. As a result, the reception and dissemination of Heidegger's philosophical writings transformed the intellectual and cultural history of (...)

The debates focus on reason and faith; the logic of mysticism; the meaning of the word 'God'; language, biblical interpretation and worship; and religion and ethics. Through contemporary philosophical analysis it is possible to shed new light on teh status and language of religion, and in many ways the contributors to Religion and Philosophy break new ground in this perennially (...)
