This article analyzes the migrant caravans as a strategy of resistance to the war against migrants in transit to the United States, exacerbated during the pandemic. This is the edited transcript of an interview conducted with Honduran journalist Inmer Gerardo Chevez, correspondent of Radio Progreso. Having travelled the Central American and Mexican routes accompanying on foot the transit of thousands of migrants since 2018, Chevez is a notable eyewitness and expert in situ of the Caravans. The interview confirms that the (...) caravan has become one of the premier forms in which Latin American migrants, including agricultural workers, struggle and their spatial dispute with the heterogeneous border control regime of the Americas are materialized. The text also reflects on the role that photography and critical journalism can play in the face of the contemporary anti-migrant policy turn. We conclude with an interpretation of the effects that the militarized violence against Latin American migrants in transit to the United States is having across the region. (shrink)

Primitive awareness leading to consciousness can be explained as a manifestation of internal forces between charge and mass. These internal forces, related to the weak and strong forces, balance the external forces of gravity-inertia and electricity-magnetism and thereby accommodate outside influences by adjusting the internal structure of material from which we are composed. Such accommodation is the physical implementation of a model of the external physical world and qualifies as Vitiello's double held inside ourselves. We experience this accommodation as (...) the conscious experience in front of our noses. Blockhead or or Baldhead? Petron. Sat. 39. 12: ‘in Aquario copones et cucurbitae’. Apul.Met. I. 15: ‘nos cucurbitae caput non habemus ut pro te moriamur’. Cucurbita in its literal use is the name of many varieties of the numerous family of Cucurbitaceae, as one may learn, e.g. from Plin. Nat. Hist. xix. It is also the name of the cupping instrument called by Juvenal, xiv. 58, uentosa cucurbita, for which see Mayor's note ad loc. For other metaphorical uses of the (...) name, Forcellini and the Thes. Ling. Lat. cite only the two passages quoted above; of these two, Lewis and Short cite only the former. Lexicographers and editors,1 comparing the one passage with the other, concur in the view that the cucurbita is the symbol of stupidity, and that a stupid man may be called a cucurbita, as in Petronius, or be said cucurbitae caput habere, as in Apuleius. At first sight their interpretation of the Apuleian phrase is plausible, for it makes tolerable sense in the context and appears to be supported by such modern expressions as ‘pumpkin-head’ and Kürbiskopf and κεχλι κολοκνθνιον, all of which liken the head of a stupid man to a pumpkin or other gourd which, though bearing some resemblance to a human head, encloses not a brain but an insensate mass of pulp and seeds. But ‘to have a pumpkin-head’ and ‘to be a pumpkin’ are prima facie very different, for the latter equates the man himself with the cucurbita, whereas it is only qua substitute for a head that the cucurbita can typify stupidity; and when it is further observed that in the Petronian passage cucurbitae so interpreted accords ill with the context, it becomes clear that some other explanation must be sought. This article offers an historical-materialist account of the coup in Honduras on 28 June 2009, which ousted democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya. It draws on over two dozen interviews with members of theFrente Nacional de la Resistencia Popular[National Front of Popular Resistance, FNRP], and participation in numerous marches and assemblies over two periods of fieldwork – January 2010, and June–July 2011. The paper steps back in time to provide an historical cartography of the basic material structures of the Honduran economy (...) and its integration into the world market, as well as the geopolitical role it played as a launching pad for Ronald Reagan’s counter-insurgency campaigns against guerrilla forces elsewhere in the region during the 1980s. We show how the defeat of mass guerrilla insurgencies in Guatemala and El Salvador, as well as the triumph over the Sandinista government in Nicaragua by 1990, allowed for the neoliberal pacification of Central America as a whole, including Honduras. We further demonstrate how the centre-leftist Manuel Zelaya, elected to the Honduran presidency in 2006, modestly encroached upon neoliberal orthodoxy and forged geopolitical alliances with left and centre-left governments elsewhere in the region, laying the bases for his violent overthrow. Finally, the paper traces the origins, trajectory, and heterogeneity of the resistance that emerged almost immediately after the coup had been carried out. (shrink)

In _No Apocalypse, No Integration _Martín Hopenhayn examines the social and philosophical implications of the triumph of neoliberalism (...) and the collapse of leftist and state-sponsored social planning in Latin America. With the failure of utopian movements that promised social change, the rupture of the link between the production of knowledge and practical intervention, and the defeat of modernization and development policy established after World War II, Latin American intellectuals and militants have been left at an impasse without a vital program of action. Hopenhayn analyzes these crises from a theoretical perspective and calls upon Latin American intellectuals to reevaluate their objects of study, their political reality, and their society’s cultural production, as well as to seek within their own history the elements for a new collective discourse. Challenging the notion that strict adherence to a single paradigm of action can rescue intellectual and cultural movements, Hopenhayn advocates a course of epistemological pluralism, arguing that such an approach values respect for difference and for cultural and theoretical diversity and heterodoxy. This essay collection will appeal to readers of sociology, public policy, philosophy, cultural theory, and Latin American history and culture, as well as to those with an interest in Latin America’s current transition. La culture populaire est ainsi un lieu de (...) réappropriation, dans un artisanat indien remodelé par le design mondialisé, autre exemple, où l'hétérogénéité des productions n'empêche pas une reconstruction identitaire qui retisse des liens avec un passé qu'il est indispensable de réinterpréter.The concept of "popular" is seized differently in Latin America and Europe, since there, the popular one is a form of hybridization of the Indian cultures, programs media and urban civilization. It is initially a question of thinking mass and popular in an autonomous way, while keeping itself of any speech of denunciation, to seize in what the telenovelas, for example, produce a second orality carrying a new cultural dynamics for the greatest number. The popular culture is thus a place of reappropriation, in an Indian craft industry reorganized by the mondialized design, another example, where the heterogeneity of the productions does not prevent an identity rebuilding which weaves new links with a past which it is essential to reinterpret. Charles Taylor—yang lahir pada 1931 di Kanada—adalah salah seorang filosof kontemporer berbahasa Inggris paling terkenal. Ia menjadi guru besar di Montreal dan mengajar juga di Oxford. Hampir 20 tahun sesudah dua jilid bukunya, Sources of the Self: The Making of Modern Identity (1989), memperoleh perhatian besar, Taylor menerbitkan buku A Secular Age, sebuah karya lebih raksasa lagi, yang oleh Robert N. Bellah disebut “salah satu buku terpenting semasa hidup saya.” Buku ini menceritakan sejarah sekularisasi di Barat dan dengan demikian juga (...) sejarah per- kembangan spiritualitas intelektual Barat dalam 500 tahun terakhir. Yang langsung mengesankan adalah luasnya pengetahuan Taylor. Taylor akrab dengan seluruh filsafat dan pemikiran yang mengungkapkan intelektualitas Barat. Uraiannya, di satu pihak, menarik garis-garis besar, di lain pihak, memperlihatkan garis-garis itu dengan penelurusan rinci terhadap apa yang ditulis oleh tokoh-tokoh intelektual, para filosof, teolog, sastrawan dan penyair. Yang juga menarik, Taylor memperlihatkan bagaimana “apa yang semula dipikirkan hanya oleh para elit, menjadi milik umum masyarakat-masyarakat seluruhnya” (hlm. 299). Perkembangan yang ditelusuri Taylor betul-betul mengherankan. Dalam pertanyaan Taylor: “Apa yang berubah antara tahun 1500 di mana hampir tidak mungkin orang tidak percaya (pada Allah), dan tahun 2000 di mana tidak hanya terdapat banyak orang ateis yang bahagia, melainkan sebaliknya di lingkungan-lingkungan tertentu iman menantang lagi sebagai aliran amat kuat?” Bagaimana Eropa Kekristenan Latin— kekristenan yang pernah memakai bahasa Latin di Eropa Tengah dan Barat, dunia yang sejak abad ke-16 terbagi dalam Katolik dan Protestan— menjadi Barat di mana “iman, bahkan bagi mereka yang yakin, hanya merupakan salah satu kemungkinan bagi manusia di antara banyak kemungkinan lain?” (hlm. 3).............................. Kesimpulan dari uraian Taylor yang dapat ditarik adalah bahwa sekularisasi merupakan sebuah proses yang kompleks, yang menggagalkan segala penjelasan sederhana dan linear. Alam sosial tersekularisasi sendiri adalah kompleks. Di satu pihak, alam itu merupakan puncak humanisme eksklusif warisan Pencerahan, tetapi, di lain pihak, eksklusivisme itu ditantang oleh suatu “kelaparan spiritual” (hlm. 680) yang tetap terarah ke sesuatu di “seberang.” “Cerita dominan sekularisasi yang cenderung mempersalahkan agama-agama atas banyaknya kesusahan dunia kita lama-kelamaan akan semakin tidak dipercayai lagi” (hlm. 770). Namun, kalau agama mau mempertahankan diri maka wakil-wakilnya harus belajar menjadi rendah hati. Perlu ditambah bahwa Taylor sedikit pun tidak memasuki pertanyaan yang banyak dikemukakan di Indonesia dan dijawab secara berbeda-beda, yaitu, apakah perkembangan 500 tahun di dunia Kristianitas Latin (Katolik dan Protestan), jadi di “Barat,” dari dunia yang penuh dengan roh-roh dan di mana ateisme sepertinya mustahil menjadi sebuah dunia humanisme eksklusif di mana untuk sebagian makin besar warga kontemporer realitas Ilahi, realitas di “seberang,” dianggap tidak ada, atau sekurang-kurangnya tidak mempunyai fungsi atau hak normatif. Buku Charles Taylor ini amat pantas dibaca dan betul-betul menantang. Kalau kita membacanya—yang tidak perlu secara tergesa-gesa—kita akan merasa mendapat wawasan yang luas, kita menjadi mengerti apa yang memotori modernitas. Buku ini betul-betul sebuah master piece. This anthropological essay provides a meditation on mass tourism while analysing the mechanisms of conflict between the needs of mass tourism and the local urban environment, extraterritorial spaces that fit into the universal heritage of humanity. Historical districts/ entertainment districts in capital cities are discussed as extraterritorial areas treated as ambivalent, bypassed, business bases. The tourists themselves constitute thoroughly ambivalent figures as tame strangers, treated simultaneously as a potential source of maximum earnings and intruders.

This article deals with a set of images which were probably the first in history to be reproduced on four continents: the Jesuit Jerome Nadal's Evangelicae Historiae Imagines, first published in Antwerp in 1593. It begins with a brief discussion of what we know about Nadal's life and the production history of his book, as well as its relationship to his Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia quae in sacrosanto missae sacrificio toto anno leguntur, which acts as a commentary to the (...) Imagines. Then follows a description of the structure of the two books, and how they narrate and expound the significance of the Gospels. The remaining sections discuss the adaptations of Nadal's imagery. While his work has received much attention from scholars around the world in recent decades, the aim of the present article is to bring together research on the use and re-use of these images in Europe, the Americas, India, China, Japan, Iran and Ethiopia, and to make clear their global impact in a way that has not been attempted before.
