In the face of criticisms that professional codes of ethics are not effective in promoting ethical behaviour, this article explores a methodology developed in a major Western Australian youth work agency for applying a Youth Work Code of Ethics in practical, real-time situations. The experience resulted in workers being conscious of the clause-by-clause content of the code across a range of situations, and being able to use it as a resource in their day-to-day work.

One of the most distinctive and startling claims of Rawlsian political liberalism is that truth has no place in public political deliberation on matters of basic justice. Joshua Cohen thinks there is a tension between Rawls’s exclusion of truth in public political deliberation and the importance accorded to truth in the conception of morally serious political deliberation held by most citizens. Cohen claims that this apparent tension can be resolved by constructing and introducing a suitably political, non-divisive and neutral, conception (...) of truth which is capable of satisfying both the highly distinctive requirements of Rawlsian political liberalism and the importance accorded to truth by the conception of public deliberation held by most citizens. In this paper I argue that Cohen is unsuccessful in this attempt and that his political conception of truth cannot satisfy both political liberalism and a descriptively adequate specification of the importance accorded to truth by the familiar accounts of morally serious political deliberation upon which Cohen relies. Este artículo presenta las relaciones entre la filosofía y la tecnología en la obra de Philip E. Agre, quien propuso una práctica técnica crítica que incorporase a la investigación tecnológica un examen de las construcciones discursivas que subyacen al proyecto de la inteligencia artificial (IA). Se ofrece una exposición de las ideas heideggerianas que Agre pretende hacer valer en la programación de la acción inteligente de agentes artificiales, si bien ulteriormente se criticará el propósito de programar el comportamiento práctico en (...) el mundo circundante, dado que esto no es otra cosa que lo que Heidegger denominó la construcción técnica moderna del ser humano como máquina. Este artículo ofrece una serie de apuntes para una historia de la presencia de la fenomenología y de la filosofía de la existencia en Costa Rica. La referencia a apuntes o anotaciones tiene el propósito de disipar desde el inicio la impresión de que acá se va a ofrecer una valoración exhaustiva de las obras que harán las veces de acervo documental para dicha historia. En vez de eso, se destacarán una serie de momentos y publicaciones que tal vez podrían (...) servir como introducción para un emprendimiento como aquel. Así, lo que se busca es una primera exploración de la presencia de la fenomenología y sus derivas contemporáneas en la filosofía costarricense. Se defenderá la tesis de que tanto la fenomenología como la filosofía de la existencia tuvieron un truncado inicio en la comunidad filosófica costarricense que, de cierta forma, refleja los avatares de la recepción contemporánea de la fenomenología. This paper deals with prolegomenal stances necessary for a proper understanding of the paradoxical nature of Heidegger’s Being and Time. It shall be argued that Heidegger’s magnum opus does not inquire into the sense of being in order to render an answer to the so called Seinsfrage. In fact, several answers have already been given traditionally, which are founded on the being/entity indifferentiation (being as God, substance, nature, subject and so forth), that is, being has been turned into a topic, (...) whilst it is essentially non-topical, for only an entity can be accounted for as topical or thematic. This is the reason why assessing Heidegger as the “thinker of being” can be misleading, if not overtly wrong, when by this is meant that being be conceived of as something that can be thematized. Para ello sitúo esta obra en el contexto del proyecto filosófico de la autora y señalo algunos cambios y continuidades en su análisis de la ira; después reviso a la luz de este nuevo libro algunas de las críticas que, centradas en la reivindicación de la ira, ha recibido su propuesta de una cultura (...) política centrada en las emociones “humanizadoras”.: This critical note examines Martha Nussbaum’s perspective on anger presented in her last book Anger and Forgiveness. Resentment, Generosity, Justice. I place this book in the context of Nussbaum’s philosophical project in order to trace changes and continuities in her views on anger, and then I examine some criticisms that have been held against her proposal of a political culture based on humanizing emotions based on the vindication of anger. Youth work is deemed to require a distinctive commitment to ethical behaviour from the adults involved. This is expressed in the requirements for the initial education of workers, in the subject benchmarks and national expectations for youth workers. A significant influence in this debate is Howard Sercombe. Sercombe seeks a substantive framework for youth work ethics. The project offers clear potential benefits alongside equally great dangers. His platform is an integration of two foundations: a particular definition of youth (...) work and a particular account of what it means to be ‘a profession’. I argue that both foundations are flawed, and potentially harmful to practice and policy. At the heart of Sercombe’s account, however, is a focus on youth work as based on a ‘covenantal relation of trust between youth workers and young people’. This insight, submerged and marginalised, does offer a substantive foundation for youth work ethics. (shrink)
