  1. Information, physics, quantum: the search for links.John Archibald Wheeler - 1989 - In Proceedings III International Symposium on Foundations of Quantum Mechanics. Tokyo: pp. 354-358.
This report reviews what quantum physics and information theory have to tell us about the age-old question, How come existence? No escape is evident from four conclusions: (1) The world cannot be a giant machine, ruled by any preestablished continuum physical law. (2) There is no such thing at the microscopic level as space or time or spacetime continuum. (3) The familiar probability function or functional, and wave equation or functional wave equation, of standard quantum theory provide mere continuum idealizations (...)

1857. After the fire of mutiny has swept through British India, young Lieutenant Victor Narraway arrives at a battered military base at Cawnpore. It is just two weeks before Christmas, but no one is able to celebrate: they have been betrayed. A soldier under arrest for dereliction of duty has killed a guard and escaped to join the rebels, taking crucial information that led to the massacre of nine men on patrol. Someone must have helped him, and medical orderly John (...)

  18. Horizons and singularities in static, spherically symmetric spacetimes.James T. Wheeler - 1995 - Foundations of Physics 25 (5):645-679.
We make a thorough study of the regions near finite-order metric-singularity boundaries of static, spherically symmetric spacetimes. After distinguishing curvature singularities from other types of metric breakdown, we examine the eigenvalues of the energy tensor near the singularities for positivity and energy dominance, find the causal class of the t-translation (“static”) Killing field, and ascertain the presence or absence of timelike, null, and spacelike geodesic incompleteness for each spacetime. For a certain subclass of spacetimes, we also show the completeness of (...)

    String Without Strings.James T. Wheeler - 2000 - Foundations of Physics 30 (7):1017-1091.
Scale invariance provides a principled reason for the physical importance of Hilbert space, the Virasoro algebra, the string mode expansion, canonical commutators and Schrödinger evolution of states, independent of the assumptions of string theory and quantum theory. The usual properties of dimensionful fields imply an infinite, projective tower of conformal weights associated with the tangent space to scale-invariant spacetimes. Convergence and measurability on this tangent tower are guaranteed using a scale-invariant norm, restricted to conformally self-dual vectors. Maps on the resulting (...)

    The geometrostatic lattice cell.John Archibald Wheeler - 1983 - Foundations of Physics 13 (1):161-173.
The geometry of lattice universes in general is reviewed, and particular attention is given to the 3-geometry of a 5-black hole model universe at the momentarily static phase of maximum expansion as an illustration of the insights to be won by considering symmetries and reflections. Three models for the black holes in this lattice universe are compared and contrasted. Reasons are given for working with Misner's “flange backup” model. The geometry interior to the individual tetrahedral cell of this lattice is (...)

Area in phase space as determiner of transition probability: Bohr-Sommerfeld bands, Wigner ripples, and Fresnel zones. [REVIEW]W. Schleich, H. Walther & J. A. Wheeler - 1988 - Foundations of Physics 18 (10):953-968.
We consider an oscillator subjected to a sudden change in equilibrium position or in effective spring constant, or both—to a “squeeze” in the language of quantum optics. We analyze the probability of transition from a given initial state to a final state, in its dependence on final-state quantum number. We make use of five sources of insight: Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization via bands in phase space, area of overlap between before-squeeze band and after-squeeze band, interference in phase space, Wigner function as quantum (...)
